Current Challenges and Perspectives for the Catalytic Pyrolysis of Lignocellulosic Biomass to High-Value Products

Lignocellulosic biomass is an excellent alternative of fossil source because it is low-cost, plentiful and environmentally friendly, and it can be transformed into biogas, bio-oil and biochar through pyrolysis; thereby, the three types of pyrolytic products can be upgraded or improved to satisfy the standard of biofuel, chemicals and energy materials for industries. The bio-oil derived from direct pyrolysis shows some disadvantages: high contents of oxygenates, water and acids, easy-aging and so forth, which restrict the large-scale application and commercialization of bio-oil. Catalytic pyrolysis favors the refinement of bio-oil through deoxygenation, cracking, decarboxylation, decarbonylation reactions and so on, which could occur on the specified reaction sites. Therefore, the catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass is a promising approach for the production of high quality and renewable biofuels. This review gives information about the factors which might determine the catalytic pyrolysis output, including the properties of biomass, operational parameters of catalytic pyrolysis and different types of pyrolysis equipment. Catalysts used in recent research studies aiming to explore the catalytic pyrolysis conversion of biomass to high quality bio-oil or chemicals are discussed, and the current challenges and future perspectives for biomass catalytic pyrolysis are highlighted for further comprehension.

Effect of nickel salts on the production of biochar derived from alkali lignin: properties and applications

The massive generation of alkali lignin, has aroused the attention of all walks of life, and an eco-friendly utilization approach needs to be exploited. Herein, a simple pretreatment method with nickel salts was developed for the valorisation of alkali lignin through slow pyrolysis. The pretreatment of nickel salts improved the foaming or swelling behaviors of alkali lignin upon heating, and the specific surface area and total pore size of biochars increased about thirteenfold and eighteenfold, respectively. Additionally, Ni⁰ particles were generated and embedded in the carbon matrix of biochars. The biochar from Ni(NO₃)₂ pretreated lignin catalyzed the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, yielding 80.5% of aniline; and that from (CH₃COO)₂Ni pretreated lignin showed adsorption capacity of lead around 87.1 mg/g. Moreover, the NiCl₂ pretreatment contributed to the formation of 1,2-dihydroxybenzene, while Ni(SO₄)₂ was conducive to the production of 4-methylguaiacol.

Production of Nitrogen-Containing Compounds via the Conversion of Natural Microalgae from Water Blooms Catalyzed by ZrO2

Utilizing the inherent high nitrogen content in natural microalgae to produce value-added nitrogen-containing compounds such as fatty amides and fatty nitriles is a promising method. Herein, a method for producing value-added fatty amides and nitriles by liquefaction of natural microalgae from water blooms in n-heptane was developed. The effects of temperature, metal oxide catalyst (ZrO₂ , Al₂ O₃ , TiO₂ , ZnO, MgO, CaO), catalyst amount, and reaction time on the preparation of value-added nitrogen-containing compounds were studied. Under the optimized conditions (0.3 g ZrO₂ , 300 °C, 6 h), the total yield of fatty amides was 6.9 wt %, and the yield of fatty nitriles was 1.9 wt %. Compared with the results obtained in the absence of ZrO₂ , after adding ZrO₂ the total yield of fatty acids was reduced by 4.7 wt % (18.5 to 13.8 wt %), while the total yield of fatty amides only increased by 0.9 wt % (6.0 to 6.9 wt %) and fatty nitriles was increased by 1.5 wt % (0.4 to 1.9 wt %). Exploring the role of ZrO₂ by using model compounds (i. e., palmitic acid and palmitamide) revealed that ZrO₂ could promote the dehydration of fatty amides to form fatty nitriles, but had limited effect on the reaction of fatty acid and NH₃ .
