Design and Kinematic Modeling of a Soft Continuum Telescopic Arm for the Self-Assembly Mechanism of a Modular Robot

In recent years, the development of mining robots has grown significantly, offering improved efficiency and safety in hazardous environments. However, there is still room for improvement in adaptability, scalability, and overall performance. The ROBOMINERS project, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program, aims to facilitate Europe's access to mineral resources applying disruptive robotic concepts. One such concept is resilience, which can be achieved providing modular mining robots with the ability to reconfigure during operation. To address this challenge, this article presents the development and kinematic modeling of a soft, telescopic, continuum arm integrated into a modular robot. The arm serves as a mechanical interface for coupling different robotic modules or tools following the principle of the car crane. With a fully 3D-printed design, the arm features two sections of variable length that are driven by an innovative actuation method based on soft racks. It provides a 6 degrees of freedom (DoF) motion. The arm kinematic models are obtained by backbone parameterization assuming constant curvature and independent bending between sections for forward kinematics and applying a machine learning-based approach for inverse kinematics. The models are validated through the evaluation of two trajectories, measuring the deviation in each DoF and rack extension. Furthermore, a demonstration of the arm's coupling procedure between two robotic modules and one possible configuration of the robotic system showcases its functionality.

Reconfigurable Soft Robots by Building Blocks

Soft robots are of increasing interest as they can cope with challenges that are poorly addressed by conventional rigid-body robots (e.g., limited flexibility). However, due to their flexible nature, the soft robots can be particularly prone to exploit modular designs for enhancing their reconfigurability, that is, a concept which, to date, has not been explored. Therefore, this paper presents a design of soft building blocks that can be disassembled and reconfigured to build different modular configurations of soft robots such as robotic fingers and continuum robots. First, a numerical model is developed for the constitutive building block allowing to understand their behavior versus design parameters, then a shape optimization algorithm is developed to permit the construction of different types of soft robots based on these soft building blocks. To validate the approach, 2D and 3D case studies of bio-inspired designs are demonstrated: first, soft fingers are introduced as a case study for grasping complex and delicate objects. Second, an elephant trunk is used for grasping a flower. Third, a walking legged robot. These case studies prove that the proposed modular building approach makes it easier to build and reconfigure different types of soft robots with multiple complex shapes.

Materials, Actuators, and Sensors for Soft Bioinspired Robots

Biological systems can perform complex tasks with high compliance levels. This makes them a great source of inspiration for soft robotics. Indeed, the union of these fields has brought about bioinspired soft robotics, with hundreds of publications on novel research each year. This review aims to survey fundamental advances in bioinspired soft actuators and sensors with a focus on the progress between 2017 and 2020, providing a primer for the materials used in their design.

Continuum Robots for Manipulation Applications: A Survey

This paper presents a literature survey documenting the evolution of continuum robots over the past two decades (1999–present). Attention is paid to bioinspired soft robots with respect to the following three design parameters: structure, materials, and actuation. Using this three-faced prism, we identify the uniqueness and novelty of robots that have hitherto not been publicly disclosed. The motivation for this study comes from the fact that continuum soft robots can make inroads in industrial manufacturing, and their adoption will be accelerated if their key advantages over counterparts with rigid links are clear. Four different taxonomies of continuum robots are included in this study, enabling researchers to quickly identify robots of relevance to their studies. The kinematics and dynamics of these robots are not covered, nor is their application in surgical manipulation.
