Characterizing and Mitigating Sensor Generated Spatial Correlations in Airborne Hyperspectral Imaging Data

In hyperspectral imaging (HSI), the spatial contribution to each pixel is non-uniform and extends past the traditionally square spatial boundaries designated by the pixel resolution, resulting in sensor-generated blurring effects. The spatial contribution to each pixel can be characterized by the net point spread function, which is overlooked in many airborne HSI applications. The objective of this study was to characterize and mitigate sensor blurring effects in airborne HSI data with simple tools, emphasizing the importance of point spread functions. Two algorithms were developed to (1) quantify spatial correlations and (2) use a theoretically derived point spread function to perform deconvolution. Both algorithms were used to characterize and mitigate sensor blurring effects on a simulated scene with known spectral and spatial variability. The first algorithm showed that sensor blurring modified the spatial correlation structure in the simulated scene, removing 54.0%–75.4% of the known spatial variability. Sensor blurring effects were also shown to remove 31.1%–38.9% of the known spectral variability. The second algorithm mitigated sensor-generated spatial correlations. After deconvolution, the spatial variability of the image was within 23.3% of the known value. Similarly, the deconvolved image was within 6.8% of the known spectral variability. When tested on real-world HSI data, the algorithms sharpened the imagery while characterizing the spatial correlation structure of the dataset, showing the implications of sensor blurring. This study substantiates the importance of point spread functions in the assessment and application of airborne HSI data, providing simple tools that are approachable for all end-users.

Computer Vision in Precipitation Nowcasting: Applying Image Quality Assessment Metrics for Training Deep Neural Networks

This paper presents a viewpoint from computer vision to the radar echo extrapolation task in the precipitation nowcasting domain. Inspired by the success of some convolutional recurrent neural network models in this domain, including convolutional LSTM, convolutional GRU and trajectory GRU, we designed a new sequence-to-sequence neural network structure to leverage these models in a realistic data context. In this design, we decreased the numbers of channels in high abstract recurrent layers rather than increasing them. We formulated the task as a problem of encoding five radar images and predicting 10 steps ahead at the pixel level, and found that using only the common mean squared error can misguide the training and mislead the testing. Especially, the image quality of last predictions usually degraded rapidly. As a solution, we employed some visual image quality assessment techniques including Structural Similarity (SSIM) and multi-scale SSIM to train our models. Experimental results show that our structure was more tolerant to increasing uncertainty in the data, and the use of image quality metrics can significantly reduce the blurry image issue. Moreover, we found that using SSIM was very effective and a combination of SSIM with mean squared error and mean absolute error yielded the best prediction quality.

Displacement Analysis of Solar Magnetic Field Images in EUV Wavelengths of Space Solar Telescope

In this paper, the combination of nonlinear gradient iteration and crossing method is presented in order to analyze high precision remote sensing images of solar magnetic field in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths which are usually affected by solar magnetic evolution, satellite attitude changes and random satellite jitter, and to reduce structural complexity the complicated correlation tracker is normally adopted. Using crossing method which better approached the inefficiency by computing full-scale solar magnetic field images, nine point areas are uniformly selected in full-scale solar magnetic field images which solves the problem of low-computing efficiency. Meanwhile, nonlinear gradient iteration algorithm through numerical simulation experiments is adopted to analyze displacement of solar magnetic field images in EUV wavelengths, which reduces the errors due to the solar intensity changing and tiny deformation of solar magnetic field compared to traditional algorithms. The results clearly indicate that the precision of mean error field and square deviation field for deformed displacement are both less than 5% of pixel by solar magnetic field images of Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).

Correlation Analysis to Identify the Effective Data in Machine Learning: Prediction of Depressive Disorder and Emotion States

Correlation analysis is an extensively used technique that identifies interesting relationships in data. These relationships help us realize the relevance of attributes with respect to the target class to be predicted. This study has exploited correlation analysis and machine learning-based approaches to identify relevant attributes in the dataset which have a significant impact on classifying a patient’s mental health status. For mental health situations, correlation analysis has been performed in Weka, which involves a dataset of depressive disorder symptoms and situations based on weather conditions, as well as emotion classification based on physiological sensor readings. Pearson’s product moment correlation and other different classification algorithms have been utilized for this analysis. The results show interesting correlations in weather attributes for bipolar patients, as well as in features extracted from physiological data for emotional states.
