Spectral Responses of As and Pb Contamination in Tailings of a Hydrothermal Ore Deposit: A Case Study of Samgwang Mine, South Korea

Environmental contamination and health risk assessment of potentially toxic trace metal elements in soils near gold mines - A global meta-analysis

Gold mining is the most important anthropogenic source of heavy metal emissions into the environment. Researchers have been aware of the environmental impacts of gold mining activities and have conducted studies in recent years, but they have only selected one gold mining site and collected soil samples in its vicinity for analysis, which does not reflect the combined impact of all gold mining activities on the concentration of potentially toxic trace elements (PTES) in nearby soils at a global scale. In this study, 77 research papers from 24 countries were collected from 2001 to 2022, and a new dataset was developed to provide a comprehensive study of the distribution characteristics, contamination characteristics, and risk assessment of 10 PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soils near the deposits. The results show that the average levels of all 10 elements are higher than the global background values and are at different levels of contamination, with As, Cd, and Hg at strong contamination levels and serious ecological risks. As and Hg contribute to a greater non-carcinogenic risk to both children and adults in the vicinity of the gold mine, and the carcinogenic risks of As, Cd, and Cu are beyond the acceptable range. Gold mining on a global scale has already caused serious impacts on nearby soils and should be given adequate attention. Timely heavy metal treatment and landscape restoration of extracted gold mines and environmentally friendly approaches such as bio-mining of unexplored gold mines where adequate protection is available are of great significance.

The Differential Antagonistic Ability of Curcumin against Cytotoxicity and Genotoxicity Induced by Distinct Heavy Metals

Widespread heavy metal pollution has aroused severe health risks worldwide. Curcumin has been reported to play a wide-spectrum protective role for various heavy metals. However, the specificity and difference in the antagonistic ability of curcumin against distinct types of heavy metals are still largely unknown. Here, using cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) as the typical heavy metals, we systematically compared the detoxification efficiency of curcumin on the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity elicited by different heavy metals under the same experimental conditions. Curcumin was proved to have a significant discrepant antagonistic capacity when counteracting the adverse effect of different heavy metals. Stronger protective effects of curcumin emerged when antagonizing the toxicity of Cd and As, rather than Pb and Ni. Curcumin exhibits a better detoxification ability against heavy metal-induced genotoxicity than cytotoxicity. Mechanistically, inhibiting the oxidative stress elicited by heavy metals and reducing the bioaccumulation of metal ions both contributed to the detoxification of curcumin against all the tested heavy metals. Our results illustrated that curcumin shows prominent detoxification specificity against different types of heavy metals and toxic endpoints, which provides a new clue for the better and targeted application of curcumin in heavy metal detoxification.

Spatial distribution and ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in surface sediments from the northern Bohai Strait, China

The epicontinental seas to the east of China have become highly anthropogenically impacted due to rapid economic development in recent decades, resulting in various environmental problems, including heavy metal pollution. The Bohai Strait, as a key junction connecting the material-energy exchange between the Bohai and Yellow Seas, is extremely critical in regional pollution prevention and control. To ascertain the spatial distribution and contamination levels of heavy metals in the surface sediments of the northern Bohai Strait, a systematic investigation was conducted. Geochemical analysis revealed that the concentrations (in ppm) of heavy metal elements in surface sediments vary in the range of 4.19-77.6 for As, 0.04-0.21 for Cd, 5.1-65.7 for Pb, 0.30-39.40 for Cu, 7.77-46.50 for Ni, 1.50-86.60 for Cr, 11.70-91.80 for Zn, and 0.005-0.038 for Hg. Ecological statistics indicate that the northern Bohai Strait suffers from prominent heavy metal pollution primarily induced by As, Cd, and Pb, accompanied by relatively weak pollution of Cu and Ni. Sediments collected from the submarine depressions and the southeast region exhibit higher heavy metal concentrations, and as a consequence, more serious ecological risk. Correlation analysis indicated that the accumulations of Hg, Cr, and Zn were associated with the deposition of organic matter. Preliminary provenance discrimination suggested that the pollutants were mainly derived from the eastern parts of the North Yellow Sea, rather than the Bohai region.

Research on the Evaluation of Geological Environment Carrying Capacity Based on the AHP-CRITIC Empowerment Method

In this study, two districts, Erdaojiang District and Dongchang District, in Tonghua City, Jilin Province, were evaluated for their geological environment carrying capacity. A total of 14 evaluation indicators were selected from the three aspects of the geological environment, ecological environment, and social environment to make it more comprehensive to evaluate the carrying capacity of the geological environment. Using the AHP and CRITIC methods, the subjective weight and objective weight of each evaluation index are obtained, and the combined weight is calculated by game theory. When combined with the GIS and combined weights, the distribution map of the geological environment carrying capacity is obtained, and it is classified into four grades: excellent, good, medium, and poor. A comprehensive evaluation of the carrying capacity of the geological environment is carried out. The following conclusions are drawn: the overall carrying capacity of the geological environment in the study area is good, and the carrying capacity of individual areas is poor. The comparative analysis of the good and poor areas provides a scientific basis for future environmental governance and urban planning and provides a scientific basis for geological disasters and mines.

Investigation of the Attenuation and Release of Cu2+ Ions by Polymer-Treated Tailings

This study investigated the attenuation and release behaviour of copper ions using a standard kaolin-silt slurry as the synthetic tailings in a high solids/high salinity application before and after inline flocculation. A homogenous, synthetic tailings slurry was prepared in a 0.6 M NaCl solution and treated in a low-shear mixer by adding Magnafloc® 336 flocculant. Following the evaluation of morphological properties of both the untreated (UT) and polymer-treated tailings (PT), identical equilibrium tests were performed via the bottle-point method constant concentration technique. The maximum copper ions uptake capacity of polymer-treated tailings was 25% more than the untreated slurry at the equilibrium state in a chemisorption process in which the ions had the capability of binding onto one location on the sorbent, which could be influencing other binding sites on the same sorbent. Polymer treatment resulted in a highly porous structure that exhibited an increased capacity to adsorb and retain copper ions compared to the UT materials. This behaviour indicates the strong binding between the copper ions and active site of the treated tailings particles with greater capability of this material for preserving heavy metal ions within their structure across a wide pH range (2–10) compared to the UT materials. The results advance the fundamental understanding of how inline flocculation can considerably improve the sorption capacity of high solids/high salinity tailings favouring potential long-term rehabilitation purposes at mine closure and the role of sorption and desorption of heavy metal ions’ behaviour play to achieve this goal.

Comprehensive Evaluation of the Eco-Geological Environment in the Concentrated Mining Area of Mineral Resources

The urbanization rate in China has been increasing in recent years, and along with the increasing intensity of human engineering activities, ecological and geological (eco-geological) degradation have become key factors impeding sustainable urban development. Taking the concentrated mineral exploitation area of Tonghua City as an example, the distribution of mines in the area is concentrated and the spatial heterogeneity is significant. This paper includes 14 evaluation indicators in three aspects: eco-geological environment background, anthropogenic and mining engineering activities, and environmental pollution. Then, based on game theory combined with ANP-CV (Analytic Network Process and Coefficient of Variation), two empowerment methods, GIS spatial calculation is used to evaluate the eco-geological environment quality (EEQ). The results showed that the EEQ was divided into grades I–V from high to low, with areas of 21.13%, 30.35%, 27.00%, 14.30%, and 7.22%, respectively; the EEQ of the Hun River basin has a high spatial autocorrelation and low EEQ, and the EEQ grade of mines was divided on this basis; the hot spot analysis is useful for determining the EEQ, as well as for allocating mine restoration resources in a sensible manner. Finally, we propose countermeasures to improve EEQ, and this study can provide a scientific basis for ecological construction and geological environmental protection in Tonghua City.

Digital mapping of potentially toxic elements enrichment in soils of Urmia Lake due to water level decline

Anthropogenic activities, in addition to climate change caused the drying of Urmia Lake in Iran, since 2005. Dust storms blown from the dried lakebed have created serious environmental hazards in adjacent areas. These crises would jeopardise achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and emphasise the need for evaluating the spatial distribution of soil enrichment of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn). Conventional assessment would require a costly sampling method to map potentially polluted areas. Digital soil mapping (DSM) has proved to be a cost-efficient method for soil mapping, however its application in mapping enrichment of PTEs in soil is still lacking. This study aims to map and project the potential pollution of PTEs in the Urmia Lake area using digital mapping techniques and Landsat-8 OLI satellite images. A total of 129 surficial soil samples were collected as ground control. Enrichment factors (EFs) of PTEs and the Modified Pollution Index (MPI) were spatially predicted using two machine learning models. Covariates were derived from a suite of Landsat-8 spectral indices. The bootstrapping method was used to analyse the uncertainties. The results showed that Random Forests performed well in estimating EFs of several PTEs. Spectral indices using NIR and SWIR bands were key to predict these PTEs and MPI. The digital maps demonstrated that the study area was enriched with As, Cu and Pb at moderate to significant levels. Regions under the lower ecological level (elevation <-1274 m) had significantly larger enrichment than those of higher elevation. Based on MPI, 43% of the area was categorised as moderately polluted, and 31% of the area was moderately-heavily polluted. Possible sources of PTEs were discharges from farmlands, landfills, and industries. Our results revealed that the Urmia Lake desiccating has caused severe environmental challenges and needs immediate restoration.

Mineral Interpretation Discrepancies Identified between Infrared Reflectance Spectra and X-ray Diffractograms

Mineral composition can be determined using different methods such as reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). However, in some cases, the composition of mineral maps obtained from reflectance spectroscopy with XRD shows inconsistencies in the mineral composition interpretation and the estimation of (semi-)quantitative mineral abundances. We show why these discrepancies exist and how should they be interpreted. Part of the explanation is related to the sample choice and preparation; another part is related to the fact that clay minerals are active in the short-wave infrared, whereas other elements in the composition are not. Together, this might lead to distinctly different interpretations for the same material, depending on the methods used. The main conclusion is that both methods can be useful, but care should be given to the limitations of the interpretation process. For infrared reflectance spectroscopy, the lack of an actual threshold value for the H–OH absorption feature at 1900 nm and the poorly defined Al–OH absorption feature at 2443 nm, as well as for XRD, detection limit, powder homogenizing, and the small amount of montmorillonite below 1 wt.%, was the source of discrepancies.

Variations in Spectral Signals of Heavy Metal Contamination in Mine Soils Controlled by Mineral Assemblages

This paper illustrates a spectroscopic analysis of heavy metal concentration in mine soils with the consideration of mineral assemblages originated by weathering and mineralization processes. The mine soils were classified into two groups based on the mineral composition: silicate clay mineral group (Group A) and silicate–carbonate–skarn–clay mineral group (Group B). Both soil groups are contaminated with Cu, Zn, As, and Pb, while the contamination level was higher for Group A. The two groups exhibit different geochemical behaviors with different heavy metal contamination. The spectral variation associated with heavy metal was highly correlated with absorption features of clay and iron oxide minerals for Group A, and the absorption features of skarn minerals, iron oxides, and clay minerals for Group B. It indicates that the geochemical adsorption of heavy metal elements mainly occurs with clay minerals and iron oxides from weathering, and of skarn minerals, iron oxides, and clay minerals from mineralization. Therefore, soils from different secondary mineral production processes should be analyzed with different spectral models. We constructed spectral models for predicting Cu, Zn, As, and Pb in soil group A and Zn and Pb in soil group B using corresponding absorptions. Both models were statistically significant with sufficient accuracy.

Accumulation and ecological risk of heavy metals in soils along the coastal areas of the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea: A comparative study of China and South Korea

Soils in coastal areas of the land-sea interface are vulnerable to heavy metal (HM) accumulation and subsequently to human health risk. However, few studies have investigated the HM pollution and risk in soils along the coastal areas of the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (YSLME), in an international perspective. This study is the first comprehensive work in the YSLME encompassing 122 coastal locations along the Bohai Sea (BS), Yellow Sea of China (YSC), and Yellow Sea of South Korea (YSK). Soil HM pollution showed great spatial variations cross the regions and countries. Accumulations of As, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the YSK were significantly higher than those in the BS and YSC (p < 0.05). Whilst the elevated Cd, Hg, and Ni in soils were found in the BS and YSC compared to those in the YSK (p < 0.05). Meantime, the assessment of ecological risk posed by HMs indicated higher potential risk in the BS than other coastal areas. In specific, Cd and Hg posed a higher risk in the BS and YSC, while As showed relatively high risk in the YSK, indicating site-dependent accumulation of HMs in soils. Soil pH and organic matter were found to be important factors affecting the HM accumulation in the study areas. Industrial activities are the major driving factors influencing spatial distributions of HMs, and such activities exhibited different degrees of influence across the sampling sites. Altogether, the results of present study first identified the bilateral characteristics of soil HM pollution along the entire coasts of the YSLME in a comprehensive manner in several aspects: (1) sources, (2) hot spots, (3) priority chemicals of concern, and (4) site-specific potential risk of the soil HMs. Overall, this study provides references and backgrounds for future environmental management strategies and aids in developing a bilateral government policy towards coastal pollution management of HMs from an international scale and perspective.

Estimation of Soil Heavy Metal Content Using Hyperspectral Data

Quickly and efficiently monitoring soil heavy metal content is crucial for protecting the natural environment and for human health. Estimating heavy metal content in soils using hyperspectral data is a cost-efficient method but challenging due to the effects of complex landscapes and soil properties. One of the challenges is how to make a lab-derived model based on soil samples applicable to mapping the contents of heavy metals in soil using air-borne or space-borne hyperspectral imagery at a regional scale. For this purpose, our study proposed a novel method using hyperspectral data from soil samples and the HuanJing-1A (HJ-1A) HyperSpectral Imager (HSI). In this method, estimation models were first developed using optimal relevant spectral variables from dry soil spectral reflectance (DSSR) data and field observations of soil heavy metal content. The relationship of the ratio of DSSR to moisture soil spectral reflectance (MSSR) with soil moisture content was then derived, which built up the linkage of DSSR with MSSR and provided the potential of applying the models developed in the laboratory to map soil heavy metal content at a regional scale using hyperspectral imagery. The optimal relevant spectral variables were obtained by combining the Boruta algorithm with a stepwise regression and variance inflation factor. This method was developed, validated, and applied to estimate the content of heavy metals in soil (As, Cd, and Hg) in Guangdong, China, and the Conghua district of Guangzhou city. The results showed that based on the validation datasets, the content of Cd could be reliably estimated and mapped by the proposed method, with relative root mean square error (RMSE) values of 17.41% for the point measurements of soil samples from Guangdong province and 17.10% for the Conghua district at the regional scale, while the content of heavy metals As and Hg in soil were relatively difficult to predict with the relative RMSE values of 32.27% and 28.72% at the soil sample level and 51.55% and 36.34% at the regional scale. Moreover, the relationship of the DSSR/MSSR ratio with soil moisture content varied greatly before the wavelength of 1029 nm and became stable after that, which linked DSSR with MSSR and provided the possibility of applying the DSSR-based models to map the soil heavy metal content at the regional scale using the HJ-1A images. In addition, it was found that overall there were only a few soil samples with the content of heavy metals exceeding the health standards in Guangdong province, while in Conghua the seriously polluted areas were mainly distributed in the cities and croplands. This study implies that the new approach provides the potential to map the content of heavy metals in soil, but the estimation model of Cd was more accurate than those of As and Hg.
