Integration of Multi-Sensor Data to Estimate Plot-Level Stem Volume Using Machine Learning Algorithms–Case Study of Evergreen Conifer Planted Forests in Japan

Co-developing an international TLS network for the 3D ecological understanding of global trees: System architecture, remote sensing models, and functional prospects

Trees are spread worldwide, as the watchmen that experience the intricate ecological effects caused by various environmental factors. In order to better understand such effects, it is preferential to achieve finely and fully mapped global trees and their environments. For this task, aerial and satellite-based remote sensing (RS) methods have been developed. However, a critical branch regarding the apparent forms of trees has significantly fallen behind due to the technical deficiency found within their global-scale surveying methods. Now, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), a state-of-the-art RS technology, is useful for the in situ three-dimensional (3D) mapping of trees and their environments. Thus, we proposed co-developing an international TLS network as a macroscale ecotechnology to increase the 3D ecological understanding of global trees. First, we generated the system architecture and tested the available RS models to deepen its ground stakes. Then, we verified the ecotechnology regarding the identification of its theoretical feasibility, a review of its technical preparations, and a case testification based on a prototype we designed. Next, we conducted its functional prospects by previewing its scientific and technical potentials and its functional extensibility. Finally, we summarized its technical and scientific challenges, which can be used as the cutting points to promote the improvement of this technology in future studies. Overall, with the implication of establishing a novel cornerstone-sense ecotechnology, the co-development of an international TLS network can revolutionize the 3D ecological understanding of global trees and create new fields of research from 3D global tree structural ecology to 3D macroecology.

Reliable Estimates of Merchantable Timber Volume from Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Simple and accurate determination of merchantable tree height is needed for accurate estimations of merchantable volume. Conventional field methods of forest inventory can lead to biased estimates of tree height and diameter, especially in complex forest structures. Terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data can be used to determine merchantable height and diameter at different heights with high accuracy and detail. This study focuses on the use of the random sampling consensus method (RANSAC) for generating the length and diameter of logs to estimate merchantable volume at the tree level using Huber’s formula. For this study, we used two plots; plot A contained deciduous trees and plot B consisted of conifers. Our results demonstrated that the TLS-based outputs for stem modelling using the RANSAC method performed very well with low bias (0.02 for deciduous and 0.01 for conifers) and a high degree of accuracy (97.73% for deciduous and 96.14% for conifers). We also found a high correlation between the proposed method and log length (−0.814 for plot A and −0.698 for plot B), which is an important finding because this information can be used to determine the optimum log properties required for analyzing stem curvature changes at different heights. Furthermore, the results of this study provide insight into the applicability and ergonomics during data collection from forest inventories solely from terrestrial laser scanning, thus reducing the need for field reference data.

Accuracy Assessment of Total Stem Volume Using Close-Range Sensing: Advances in Precision Forestry

Accurate collection of dendrometric information is essential for improving decision confidence and supporting potential advances in forest management planning (FMP). Total stem volume is an important forest inventory parameter that requires high accuracy. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has emerged as one of the most promising tools for automatically measuring total stem height and diameter at breast height (DBH) with very high detail. This study compares the accuracy of different methods for extracting the total stem height and DBH to estimate total stem volume from TLS data. Our results show that estimates of stem volume using the random sample consensus (RANSAC) and convex hull and HTSP methods are more accurate (bias = 0.004 for RANSAC and bias = 0.009 for convex hull and HTSP) than those using the circle fitting method (bias = 0.046). Furthermore, the RANSAC method had the best performance with the lowest bias and the highest percentage of accuracy (78.89%). The results of this study provide insight into the performance and accuracy of the tested methods for tree-level stem volume estimation, and allow for the further development of improved methods for point-cloud-based data collection with the goal of supporting potential advances in precision forestry.

Recent Advances in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Forest Remote Sensing—A Systematic Review. Part II: Research Applications

Forest sustainable management aims to maintain the income of woody goods for companies, together with preserving non-productive functions as a benefit for the community. Due to the progress in platforms and sensors and the opening of the dedicated market, unmanned aerial vehicle–remote sensing (UAV–RS) is improving its key role in the forestry sector as a tool for sustainable management. The use of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) in precision forestry has exponentially increased in recent years, as demonstrated by more than 600 references published from 2018 until mid-2020 that were found in the Web of Science database by searching for “UAV” + “forest”. This result is even more surprising when compared with similar research for “UAV” + “agriculture”, from which emerge about 470 references. This shows how UAV–RS research forestry is gaining increasing popularity. In Part II of this review, analyzing the main findings of the reviewed papers (227), numerous strengths emerge concerning research technical issues. UAV–RS is fully applicated for obtaining accurate information from practical parameters (height, diameter at breast height (DBH), and biomass). Research effectiveness and soundness demonstrate that UAV–RS is now ready to be applied in a real management context. Some critical issues and barriers in transferring research products are also evident, namely, (1) hyperspectral sensors are poorly used, and their novel applications should be based on the capability of acquiring tree spectral signature especially for pest and diseases detection, (2) automatic processes for image analysis are poorly flexible or based on proprietary software at the expense of flexible and open-source tools that can foster researcher activities and support technology transfer among all forestry stakeholders, and (3) a clear lack exist in sensors and platforms interoperability for large-scale applications and for enabling data interoperability.

Recent Advances in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Forest Remote Sensing—A Systematic Review. Part I: A General Framework

Natural, semi-natural, and planted forests are a key asset worldwide, providing a broad range of positive externalities. For sustainable forest planning and management, remote sensing (RS) platforms are rapidly going mainstream. In a framework where scientific production is growing exponentially, a systematic analysis of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based forestry research papers is of paramount importance to understand trends, overlaps and gaps. The present review is organized into two parts (Part I and Part II). Part II inspects specific technical issues regarding the application of UAV-RS in forestry, together with the pros and cons of different UAV solutions and activities where additional effort is needed, such as the technology transfer. Part I systematically analyzes and discusses general aspects of applying UAV in natural, semi-natural and artificial forestry ecosystems in the recent peer-reviewed literature (2018–mid-2020). The specific goals are threefold: (i) create a carefully selected bibliographic dataset that other researchers can draw on for their scientific works; (ii) analyze general and recent trends in RS forest monitoring (iii) reveal gaps in the general research framework where an additional activity is needed. Through double-step filtering of research items found in the Web of Science search engine, the study gathers and analyzes a comprehensive dataset (226 articles). Papers have been categorized into six main topics, and the relevant information has been subsequently extracted. The strong points emerging from this study concern the wide range of topics in the forestry sector and in particular the retrieval of tree inventory parameters often through Digital Aerial Photogrammetry (DAP), RGB sensors, and machine learning techniques. Nevertheless, challenges still exist regarding the promotion of UAV-RS in specific parts of the world, mostly in the tropical and equatorial forests. Much additional research is required for the full exploitation of hyperspectral sensors and for planning long-term monitoring.

Mapping Aboveground Woody Biomass on Abandoned Agricultural Land Based on Airborne Laser Scanning Data

Mapping aboveground woody biomass (AGB) on abandoned agricultural land (AAL) is required by relevant stakeholders to monitor the spatial dynamics of farmland afforestation, to assess the carbon sequestration, and to set the appropriate management of natural resources. The objective of this study was, therefore, to present and assess a workflow consisting of (1) the spatial identification of AAL based on a combination of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, cadastral data, and Land Parcel Identification System data, and (2) the prediction of AGB on AAL using an area-based approach and a nonparametric random forest (RF) model based on a combination of field and ALS data. Part of the second objective was also to evaluate the applicability of (1) the author-developed algorithm for the calculation of ALS metrics and (2) a single comprehensive RF model for the whole area of interest. The study was conducted in the forest management unit Vígľaš (Slovakia, Central Europe) covering a total area of 12,472 ha. Specifically, five reference areas consisting of 11,194 reference points were used to assess the accuracy of the spatial identification of AAL, and seventy-five ground reference plots were used for the development of the ALS-based AGB model and for assessing the accuracy of the AGB map. The overall accuracy of the spatial identification of AAL was found to be 93.00% (Cohen’s kappa = 0.82). The difference between ALS-predicted and ground-observed AGB reached a relative root mean square error (RMSE) at 26.1%, 33.1%, and 21.3% for the whole sample size, plots dominated by shrub species, and plots dominated by tree species, respectively.
