GNSS Storm Nowcasting Demonstrator for Bulgaria

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is an established atmospheric monitoring technique delivering water vapour data in near-real time with a latency of 90 min for operational Numerical Weather Prediction in Europe within the GNSS water vapour service (E-GVAP). The advancement of GNSS processing made the quality of real-time GNSS tropospheric products comparable to near-real-time solutions. In addition, they can be provided with a temporal resolution of 5 min and latency of 10 min, suitable for severe weather nowcasting. This paper exploits the added value of sub-hourly real-time GNSS tropospheric products for the nowcasting of convective storms in Bulgaria. A convective Storm Demonstrator (Storm Demo) is build using real-time GNSS tropospheric products and Instability Indices to derive site-specific threshold values in support of public weather and hail suppression services. The Storm Demo targets the development of service featuring GNSS products for two regions with hail suppression operations in Bulgaria, where thunderstorms and hail events occur between May and September, with a peak in July. The Storm Demo real-time Precise Point Positioning processing is conducted with the G-Nut software with a temporal resolution of 15 min for 12 ground-based GNSS stations in Bulgaria. Real-time data evaluation is done using reprocessed products and the achieved precision is below 9 mm, which is within the nowcasting requirements of the World Meteorologic Organisation. For the period May–September 2021, the seasonal classification function for thunderstorm nowcasting is computed and evaluated. The probability of thunderstorm detection is 83%, with a false alarm ration of 38%. The added value of the high temporal resolution of the GNSS tropospheric gradients is investigated for a storm case on 24–30 August 2021. Real-time tropospheric products and classification functions are integrated and updated in real-time on a publicly accessible geoportal.

GPS-Based Multi-Temporal Variation in Precipitable Water over the Territory of Poland

An increase in temperature causes higher evaporation of water from water bodies; consequently, the water content in the atmosphere also increases. The precipitable water (PW), as the water content in the atmospheric air column, is therefore an important parameter to consider when studying climate change. The aim of this study was to analyse multi-annual precipitable water data derived from a dense Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS) network. Twelve years of observations from over a hundred ASG-EUPOS stations were used to estimate changes in precipitation water values over Poland. The data were validated by comparison with the available radio-sounding data. The analysis of the GPS-based PW values showed an upward trend in the PW value of 0.078 mm/year. The spatio-temporal distribution of the mean PW values and their fluctuations over the years were studied and visualised in the form of maps. The results are congruent with the fact that Poland lies on the border of influence of both continental and oceanic climates. Our results are also consistent with other climate research concerning this region.

Development of an Improved Model for Prediction of Short-Term Heavy Precipitation Based on GNSS-Derived PWV

Nowadays, the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have become an effective atmospheric observing technique to remotely sense precipitable water vapor (PWV) mainly due to their high spatiotemporal resolutions. In this study, from an investigation for the relationship between GNSS-derived PWV (GNSS-PWV) and heavy precipitation, it was found that from several hours before heavy precipitation, PWV was probably to start with a noticeable increase followed by a steep drop. Based on this finding, a new model including five predictors for heavy precipitation prediction is proposed. Compared with the existing 3-factor model that uses three predictors derived from the ascending trend of PWV time series (i.e., PWV value, PWV increment and rate of the PWV increment), the new model also includes two new predictors derived from the descending trend: PWV decrement and rate of PWV decrement. The use of the two new predictors for reducing the number of misdiagnosis predictions is proposed for the first time. The optimal set of monthly thresholds for the new five-predictor model in each summer month were determined based on hourly GNSS-PWV time series and precipitation records at three co-located GNSS/weather stations during the 8-year period 2010–2017 in the Hong Kong region. The new model was tested using hourly GNSS-PWV and precipitation records obtained at the above three co-located stations during the summer months in 2018 and 2019. Results showed that 189 of the 198 heavy precipitation events were correctly predicted with a lead time of 5.15 h, and the probability of detection reached 95.5%. Compared with the 3-factor method, the new model reduced the FAR score by 32.9%. The improvements made by the new model have great significance for early detection and predictions of heavy precipitation in near real-time.
