Assessment of the Capability of Sentinel-2 Imagery for Iron-Bearing Minerals Mapping: A Case Study in the Cuprite Area, Nevada

Coal seam in-situ inorganic analysis based on least angle regression and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling algorithm by XRF-visNIR fusion

The fusion of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and visible near infrared spectroscopy (visNIR) has been widely used in geological exploration. The outer product analysis (OPA) has a good effect in the fusion. The dimension of the spectral matrix obtained by OPA is large, and the Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) cannot cover the whole spectrum. As a result, the selected variables by the method are inconsistent each time. In this paper, a new feature variable screening method is proposed, which uses the Least Angle Regression (LAR) to select the high dimensional spectral matrix first, and then uses CARS to complete the secondary selection of the spectral matrix, forming the LAR-CARS algorithm. The purpose is to make the sampling method cover all the spectral data. XRF and visNIR tests were carried out on three cores in two boreholes, and a cross-validation set, validation set and a test set were established by combining the results of wavelength dispersion X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and ITRAX Core scanner in the laboratory. The quantitative model was established with the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and LAR-CARS was compared to these other algorithms (LAR, Successive Projections Algorithm, Monte Carlo uninformative variables elimination and CARS). The results showed that the RMSEP values of the models established by the LAR-CARS for six rock-forming elements (Si, Al, K, Ca, Fe, Ti) were relatively small, and the RPD ranges from 1.424 to 2.514. All these results show that the high-dimensional matrix formed by XRF and visNIR integration combined with LAR-CARS can be used for quantitative analysis of rock forming elements in in-situ coal seam cores, and the analysis results can be used as the basis for judging lithology. The research will provide necessary technical support for digital mine construction.

Spectral Analysis to Improve Inputs to Random Forest and other Boosted Ensemble Tree-Based Algorithms for Detecting NYF Pegmatites in Tysfjord, Norway

As an important source of lithium and rare earth elements (REE) and other critical elements, pegmatites are of great strategic economic interest for present and future technological development. Identifying new pegmatite deposits is a strategy adopted by the European Union (EU) to decrease its import dependence on non-European countries for these raw materials. It is in this context that the GREENPEG project was established, an EU project whose main objective is to identify new deposits of pegmatites in Europe in an environmentally friendly way. Remote sensing is a non-contact exploration tool that allows for identifying areas of interest for exploration at the early stage of exploration campaigns. Several RS methods have been developed to identify Li-Cs-Ta (LCT) pegmatites, but in this study, a new methodology was developed to detect Nb-Y-F (NYF) pegmatites in the Tysfjord area in Norway. This methodology is based on spectral analysis to select bands of the Sentinel 2 satellite and adapt RS methods, such as Band Ratios and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), to be used as input in the Random Forest (RF) and other tree-based ensemble algorithms to improve the classification accuracy. The results obtained are encouraging, and the algorithm was able to successfully identify the pegmatite areas already known and new locations of interest for exploration were also defined.

Application of Multispectral Remote Sensing for Mapping Flood-Affected Zones in the Brumadinho Mining District (Minas Gerais, Brasil)

The collapse of the tailing “Dam B1” of the Córrego do Feijão Mine (Brumadinho, Brasil) that occurred in January 2019 is considered a large socio-environmental flood-disaster where numerous people died and the local flora and fauna were seriously affected, including agricultural areas of the Paraopeba River. This study aims to map the land area affected by the flood by using multispectral satellite images. To pursue this aim, Level-2A multispectral images from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 sensor were acquired before and after the tailing dam collapse in the period 2019–2021. The pre- and post-failure event analysis allowed us to evidence drastic changes in the vegetation rate, as well as in the nature of soils and surficial waters. The spectral signatures of the minerals composing the mining products allowed us to highlight the effective area covered by the flood and to investigate the evolution of land properties after the disaster. This technique opens the possibility for quickly classifying areas involved in floods, as well as obtaining significant information potentially useful for monitoring and planning the reclamation and restoration activities in similar cases worldwide, representing an additional tool for evaluating the environmental issues related to mining operations in large areas at high temporal resolution.

Synergy of Remote Sensing Data for Exploring Hydrothermal Mineral Resources Using GIS-Based Fuzzy Logic Approach

The Arabian Nubian Shield (ANS) contains a variety of gold deposits in the form of veins and veinlets formed by hydrothermal fluids. Characterizing potential areas of hydrothermal alteration zones therefore provides a significant tool for prospecting for hydrothermal gold deposits. In this study, we develop a model of exploration for hydrothermal mineral resources in an area located in the ANS, Egypt, using multiple criteria derived from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), Landsat-Operational Land Imager (OLI), and Sentinel-2 data and field work through GIS-based fuzzy logic approach. The hydrothermal alteration zones (HAZs) map extracted from combining mineral indices, spectral bands, and ratios is consistent with observed argillic alteration zones around the mineralized veins. Combining HAZs and lineament density led to identification of six zones based on their mineralization potential, and provides a tool for successful reconnaissance prospecting for future hydrothermal mineral deposits. The detected zones are labeled as excellent, very high, high, moderate, low, and very low, based on their potential for Au production, and the predictive excellent and very high zones cover about 1.6% of the study area. This model also shows that target prospective zones are quartz veins controlled by NNW-SSE trending fracture/fault zones all crosscutting Precambrian rocks of the ANS. Field observations and petrographic and X-ray diffraction analyses were performed to validate the mineral prospective map and revealed that quartz veins consist of gold–sulfide mineralization (e.g., gold, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite). Consistency between the high potential hydrothermal alterations zones (HAZs) and the location of gold mineralization is achieved.
