Abstract
Efficient detection and monitoring procedures of invasive plant species are required. It is of crucial importance to deal with such plants in aquatic ecosystems, since they can affect biodiversity and, ultimately, ecosystem function and services. In this study, it is intended to detect water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) using multispectral data with different spatial resolutions. For this purpose, high-resolution data (<0.1 m) acquired from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and coarse-resolution data (10 m) from Sentinel-2 MSI were used. Three areas with a high incidence of water hyacinth located in the Lower Mondego region (Portugal) were surveyed. Different classifiers were used to perform a pixel-based detection of this invasive species in both datasets. From the different classifiers used, the results were achieved by the random forest classifiers stand-out (overall accuracy (OA): 0.94). On the other hand, support vector machine performed worst (OA: 0.87), followed by Gaussian naive Bayes (OA: 0.88), k-nearest neighbours (OA: 0.90), and artificial neural networks (OA: 0.91). The higher spatial resolution from UAV-based data enabled us to detect small amounts of water hyacinth, which could not be detected in Sentinel-2 data. However, and despite the coarser resolution, satellite data analysis enabled us to identify water hyacinth coverage, compared well with a UAV-based survey. Combining both datasets and even considering the different resolutions, it was possible to observe the temporal and spatial evolution of water hyacinth. This approach proved to be an effective way to assess the effects of the mitigation/control measures taken in the study areas. Thus, this approach can be applied to detect invasive species in aquatic environments and to monitor their changes over time.

Demystifying the Differences between Structure-from-MotionSoftware Packages for Pre-Processing Drone Data. DRONES 2022. Abstract
With the increased availability of low-cost, off-the-shelf drone platforms, drone data become easy to capture and are now a key component of environmental assessments and monitoring. Once the data are collected, there are many structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry software options available to pre-process the data into digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthomosaics for further environmental analysis. However, not all software packages are created equal, nor are their outputs. Here, we evaluated the workflows and output products of four desktop SfM packages (AgiSoft Metashape, Correlator3D, Pix4Dmapper, WebODM), across five input datasets representing various ecosystems. We considered the processing times, output file characteristics, colour representation of orthomosaics, geographic shift, visual artefacts, and digital surface model (DSM) elevation values. No single software package was determined the “winner” across all metrics, but we hope our results help others demystify the differences between the options, allowing users to make an informed decision about which software and parameters to select for their specific application. Our comparisons highlight some of the challenges that may arise when comparing datasets that have been processed using different parameters and different software packages, thus demonstrating a need to provide metadata associated with processing workflows.

Abstract
Image segmentation plays a significant role in remote sensing image processing. Among numerous segmentation algorithms, the region-merging segmentation algorithm is widely used due to its well-organized structure and outstanding results. Many merging criteria (MC) were designed to improve the accuracy of region-merging segmentation, but each MC has its own shortcomings, which can cause segmentation errors. Segmentation accuracy can be improved by referring to the segmentation results. To achieve this, an approach for detecting and correcting region-merging image segmentation errors is proposed, and then an iterative optimization model is established. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) The conflict types of matching segment pairs are divided into scale-expression conflict (SEC) and region-ownership conflict (ROC), and ROC is more suitable for optimization. (2) An equal-scale local evaluation method was designed to quantify the optimization potential of ROC. (3) A regional anchoring strategy is proposed to preserve the results of the previous iteration optimization. Three QuickBird satellite images of different land-cover types were used for validating the proposed approach. Both unsupervised and supervised evaluation results prove that the proposed approach can effectively improve segmentation accuracy. All explicit and implicit optimization modes are concluded, which further illustrate the stability of the proposed approach.
