Effective Range and Driving Factors of the Urban Ventilation Corridor Effect on Urban Thermal Comfort at Unified Scale with Multisource Data

Land surface and air temperature dynamics: The role of urban form and seasonality

Due to the scarcity of air temperature (Ta) observations, urban heat studies often rely on satellite-derived Land Surface Temperature (LST) to characterise the near-surface thermal environment. However, there remains a lack of a quantitative understanding on how LST differs from Ta within urban areas and what are the controlling factors of their interaction. We use crowdsourced air temperature measurements in Sydney, Australia, combined with urban landscape data, Local Climate Zones (LCZ), high-resolution satellite imagery, and machine learning to explore the influence of urban form and fabric on the interaction between Ta and LST. Results show that LST and Ta have distinct spatiotemporal characteristics, and their relationship differs by season, ecological infrastructure, and building morphology. We found greater seasonal variability in LST compared to Ta, along with more pronounced intra-urban spatial variability in LST, particularly in warmer seasons. We also observed a greater temperature difference between LST and Ta in the built environment compared to the natural LCZs, especially during warm days. Natural LCZs (areas with mostly dense and scattered trees) showed stronger LST-Ta relationships compared to built areas. In particular, we observe that built areas with higher building density (where the heat vulnerability is likely more pronounced) show insignificant or negative relationships between LST- Ta in summer. Our results also indicate that surface cover, distance from the ocean, and seasonality significantly influence the distribution of hot and cold spots for LST and Ta. The spatial distribution for Ta hot spots does not always overlap with LST. We find that relying solely on LST as a direct proxy for the urban thermal environment is inappropriate, particularly in densely built-up areas and during warm seasons. These findings provide new perspectives on the relationship between surface and canopy temperatures and how these relate to urban form and fabric.

Urban ventilation corridors and spatiotemporal divergence patterns of urban heat island intensity: a local climate zone perspective

Urban ventilation corridors introduce fresh air into urban interiors and improve urban livability, while mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect. However, few studies have assessed the impact of urban ventilation corridors on UHI intensity (UHII) from the perspective of the local climates of different cities. Therefore, this study integrated multisource data to construct ventilation corridors from the perspective of local climate zone (LCZ) and analyzed its impact on UHII. The results showed the following: (1) the average UHII of constructed LCZs was higher than that of natural LCZs, among which the building type LCZ10 (heavy industry) had the highest intensity (5.77 °C); (2) in extracted ventilation corridors, the pixel number of natural LCZs was substantially larger than that of constructed LCZs, among which LCZE (bare soil/paved) was the largest; and (3) for natural LCZs, the average UHII of each LCZ was lower within the ventilated corridors than within the non-ventilated corridors (except for LCZG [water]), with the UHII of LCZB (scattered trees) exhibiting the greatest mitigation effect. Quantitative research on the composition and function of ventilation corridors can not only assess the ability of ventilation corridors to mitigate UHIs, but also provide a reference for urban ventilation corridor planning.

Research on the Planning of an Urban Ventilation Corridor Based on the Urban Underlying Surface Taking Kaifeng City as an Example

With the rapid development of urbanization, various urban problems such as air pollution, urban heat islands, poor ventilation, and so on have followed. Ventilation corridors can improve the internal ventilation conditions of a city and can effectively alleviate these urban problems. Taking Kaifeng as an example of a medium-sized city, this study used meteorological analysis and remote sensing (RS) technology and a geographical information system (GIS) to plan ventilation corridors. Through analysis of the thermal environment, the influential factors of the underlying surface (building density, road length, water length, vegetation coverage) and wind environment in Kaifeng, the compensation space and action space, and the comprehensive values of the ventilation potential in each region were determined. The results show that with the use of the single-window algorithm and Landsat8 data, high-resolution ground temperature can be retrieved. Moreover, although the ventilation potential value of Kaifeng in the northern part is better than that in the southern part, the temperature in the north is higher than that in the south. Through comparison and analysis of the location of the low-temperature zone, the air duct opening of the ventilation corridor can be determined and the source areas of three ecological ventilation corridors identified. According to the ventilation corridor air duct opening, the urban underlying surface and the dominant wind direction of Kaifeng city, two ventilation corridors located on the eastern and western sides of Kaifeng city were planned. This urban ventilation corridor planning method, which is based on temperature difference analysis and determination of the source area of the ventilation corridor, can provide a reference for the construction of an ecologically livable city.
