Assessment of Drought Impact on Net Primary Productivity in the Terrestrial Ecosystems of Mongolia from 2003 to 2018

Temporal and spatial evolution simulation and attribution analysis of vegetation photosynthesis over the past 21 years based on satellite SIF data: a case study from Asia

Photosynthesis in vegetation is one of the key processes in maintaining regional ecological balance and climate stability, and it is of significant importance for understanding the health of regional ecosystems and addressing climate change. Based on 2001-2021 Global OCO-2 Solar-Induced Fluorescence (GOSIF) dataset, this study analyzed spatiotemporal variations in Asian vegetation photosynthesis and its response to climate and human activities. Results show the following: (1) From 2001 to 2021, the overall photosynthetic activity of vegetation in the Asian region has shown an upward trend, exhibiting a stable distribution pattern with higher values in the eastern and southern regions and lower values in the central, western, and northern regions. In specific regions such as the Turgen Plateau in northwestern Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Laos, and northeastern Syria, photosynthesis significantly declined. (2) Meteorological factors influencing photosynthesis exhibit differences based on latitude and vertical zones. In low-latitude regions, temperature is the primary driver, while in mid-latitude areas, solar radiation and precipitation are crucial. High-latitude regions are primarily influenced by temperature, and high-altitude areas depend on precipitation and solar radiation. (3) Human activities (56.44%) have a slightly greater impact on the dynamics of Asian vegetation photosynthesis compared to climate change (43.56%). This research deepens our comprehension of the mechanisms behind the fluctuations in Asian vegetation photosynthesis, offering valuable perspectives for initiatives in environmental conservation, sustainability, and climate research.

Extreme climate and crime: Empirical evidence based on 129 prefecture-level cities in China

Climate change is having profound effects on natural and socio-economic systems, especially via extreme climate events. Using panel data from 129 prefectural-level cities in China from 2013 to 2019, this paper explores the effects of extreme climate on crime rates based on a climate index and manual collection of crime data. The results showed that extreme climate has a significant positive effect on crime rates, increasing by 0.035% for every 1% increase in the extreme climate index. This occurs through two mechanistic pathways: reduced agricultural output and lower employment income. The heterogeneity analysis shows that extreme climate has a greater impact on crime rates in eastern areas which are economically developed and have high levels of immigration. This study provides new perspectives on the impact of extreme climate on the economy and society, in which governments can actively participate in climate governance through environmental protection, energy conservation and emission reduction, and technological innovation to reduce crime rates by reducing the occurrence of extreme climate.

Spatiotemporal Change of Net Primary Productivity and Its Response to Climate Change in Temperate Grasslands of China

The temperate grasslands in China play a vital part in regulating regional carbon cycle and climate change. Net primary productivity (NPP) is a crucial index that reflects ecological function of plants and the carbon sequestration capacity of grassland ecosystem. Climate change can affect NPP by changing vegetation growth, but the effects of climate change on the NPP of China's temperate grasslands remain unclear. Based on MODIS data and monthly climate data during 2000-2020, this study explored the spatiotemporal changes in grassland NPP and its response to climate change in temperate grasslands of China. We found that the annual NPP over the entire China's temperate grasslands increased significantly by 4.0 gC/m2/year from 2000 to 2020. The annual NPP showed increasing trends for all the different grassland vegetation types, with the smallest increase for temperate desert steppe (2.2 gC/m2/year) and the largest increase for temperate meadow (5.4 gC/m2/year). The correlation results showed that increased annual precipitation had a positive relationship with the NPP of temperate grasslands. Increased summer and autumn precipitation could increase grassland NPP, particularly for the temperate meadow. With regard to the effects of temperatures, increased temperature, particularly the summer maximum temperature, could decrease annual NPP. However, increased spring minimum temperature could increase the NPP of temperate desert steppe. In addition, this study found, for the first time, an asymmetric relationship between summer nighttime and daytime warming and the NPP of temperate meadow. Specifically, nighttime warming can increase NPP, while daytime warming can reduce NPP in temperate meadow. Our results highlight the importance of including seasonal climate conditions in assessing the vegetation productivity for different grassland types of temperate grasslands and predicting the influences of future climate change on temperate grassland ecosystems.

Concurrent Climate Extremes and Impacts on Ecosystems in Southwest China

Global warming and its associated changes in temperature and precipitation have significantly affected the ecosystem in Southwest China, yet studies that integrate temperature and precipitation changes are inadequate for quantitatively assessing the impacts of extreme events on ecosystems. In this study, the return period of concurrent climate extremes characterized by precipitation deficit and extreme temperature and the spatial and temporal dynamic patterns of their impacts on ecosystems were assessed by using high-precision temperature and precipitation data, as well as NDVI and NPP data collected for the 1985–2015 period. The results show that the 2009 concurrent event had a return period of about 200 years. The return periods of individual climate factors are significantly overestimated or underestimated. Concurrent events significantly reduced the spring and annual Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and net primary productivity (NPP) in Southwest China. The magnitude of the reduction in vegetation greenness and productivity increased with the intensity of concurrent events. Concurrent events beginning in autumn 2009 reduced spring NDVI and NPP by 8.8% and 23%, and annual NDVI and NPP by 2.23% and 7.22%, respectively. Under future climate scenarios, the return period of concurrent events could be significantly shortened, which would have a more severe impact on regional ecosystems.

Comparative Assessment of Grassland Dynamic and Its Response to Drought Based on Multi-Index in the Mongolian Plateau

This study applied grassland related multi-index and assessed the effects of climate change by investigating grassland responses to drought. This process was performed to study grassland vegetation dynamic accurately and evaluate the effect of drought in the Mongolian Plateau (MP). The spatial–temporal characteristics of grassland dynamic in terms of coverage (F_v), surface bareness (F_b), and net primary production (NPP) from 2000 to 2013 were explored. We implemented the maximum Pearson correlation to analyze the grassland vegetation in response to drought by using self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI). Results show that F_v and NPP present an increasing trend (0.18 vs. 0.43). F_b showed a decreasing trend with a value of −0.16. The grassland F_v and NPP positively correlated with scPDSI, with a value of 0.12 and 0.85, respectively, and F_b was −0.08. The positive correlation between F_v and NPP accounted for 84.08%, and the positive correlation between F_v and scPDSI accounted for 93.88%. On the contrary, the area with a negative correlation between F_b and scPDSI was 57.43%. The grassland in the MP showed a recovery tendency. The increase in grassland caused by positive reaction was mainly distributed in the middle of Mongolia (MG), whereas that caused by counter response was mainly distributed in the east and west MG and northeast Inner Mongolia autonomous region of China (IM). The relevant results may provide useful information for policymakers about mitigation strategies against the inverse effects of drought on grassland and help to ease the losses caused by drought.
