Abstract
Accurate garlic identification and mapping are vital for precise crop management and the optimization of yield models. However, previous understandings of garlic identification were limited. Here, we propose an automatic garlic mapping framework using optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images on the Google Earth Engine. Specifically, we firstly mapped winter crops based on the phenology of winter crops derived from Sentinel-2 data. Then, the garlic was identified separately using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data based on the winter crops map. Additionally, multi-source validation data were used to evaluate our results. In garlic mapping, coupled optical and SAR images (OA 95.34% and kappa 0.91) outperformed the use of only optical images (OA 74.78% and kappa 0.50). The algorithm explored the potential of multi-source remote sensing data to identify target crops in mixed and fragmented planting regions. The garlic planting information from the resultant map is essential for optimizing the garlic planting structure, regulating garlic price fluctuations, and promoting a healthy and sustainable development of the garlic industry.

Abstract
Land cover change affects the carbon emissions of ecosystems in some way. The qualitative and quantitative understanding of carbon emissions from human activities (e.g., land cover change, industrial production, etc.) is highly significant for realizing the objective of carbon neutrality. Therefore, this paper used GlobeLand30 land cover maps, annual average normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) data, annual average net ecosystem productivity (NEP) data and statistical yearbook data from 2000 to 2020 to explore the relationship between land cover change and carbon emissions. Specifically, it included land cover change, carbon storage changes influenced by land cover change, spatial and temporal analysis of carbon sources and sinks, land use intensity change and anthropogenic carbon emissions. The results of the study show that the main land cover changes in Shandong province during 2000–2020 was cultivated land conversion to artificial surfaces. Among them, the area of cultivated land converted to artificial surfaces from 2000 to 2010 was 4930.62 km2, and the proportion of cultivated land converted to artificial surfaces from 2010 to 2020 was as high as 78.35%. The total carbon stock of vegetation affected by land cover change decreased by 463.96 × 104 t and 193.50 × 104 t in 2000–2010 and 2010–2020 respectively. The spatial and temporal distribution of carbon sources and sinks differed more markedly from 2000 to 2020, and land use intensity changes in Shandong Province showed an upward trend. Of the total energy production, industry has the largest energy consumption, followed closely by total energy consumption in transportation, storage and postal services.

Abstract
Winter cereals, including wheat, rye, barley, and triticale, are important food crops, and it is crucial to identify the distribution of winter cereals for monitoring crop growth and predicting yield. The production and plating area of winter cereals in Europe both contribute 12.57% to the total global cereal production and plating area in 2020. However, the distribution maps of winter cereals with high spatial resolution are scarce in Europe. Here, we first used synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from Sentinel-1 A/B, in the Interferometric Wide (IW) swath mode, to distinguish rapeseed and winter cereals; we then used a time-weighted dynamic time warping (TWDTW) method to discriminate winter cereals from other crops by comparing the similarity of seasonal changes in the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from Landsat and Sentinel-2 images. We generated winter cereal maps for 2016–2020 that cover 32 European countries with 30 m spatial resolution. Validation using field samples obtained from the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform show that the producer’s and user’s accuracies are 91% ± 7.8% and 89% ± 10.3%, respectively, averaged over 32 countries in Europe. The winter cereal map agrees well with agricultural census data for planted winter cereal areas at municipal and country levels, with the averaged coefficient of determination R2 as 0.77 ± 0.15 for 2016–2019. In addition, our method can identify the distribution of winter cereals two months before harvest, with an overall accuracy of 88.4%, indicating that TWDTW is an effective method for timely crop growth monitoring and identification at the continent level. The winter cereal maps in Europe are available via an open-data repository.

High-Resolution Mapping of Paddy Rice Extent and Growth Stages across Peninsular Malaysia Using a Fusion of Sentinel-1 and 2 Time Series Data in Google Earth Engine. REMOTE SENSING 2022. Abstract
Rice is the staple crop for more than half the world’s population, but there is a lack of high-resolution maps outlining rice areas and their growth stages. Most remote sensing studies map the rice extent; however, in tropical regions, rice is grown throughout the year with variable planting dates and cropping frequency. Thus, mapping rice growth stages is more useful than mapping only the extent. This study addressed this challenge by developing a phenology-based method. The hypothesis was that the unsupervised classification (k-means clustering) of Sentinel-1 and 2 time-series data could identify rice fields and growth stages, because (1) the presence of flooding during transplanting can be identified by Sentinel-1 VH backscatter; and (2) changes in the canopy of rice fields during growth stages (vegetative, generative, and ripening phases) up to the point of harvesting can be identified by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series. Using the proposed method, this study mapped rice field extent and cropping calendars across Peninsular Malaysia (131,598 km2) on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The Sentinel-1 and 2 monthly time series data from January 2019 to December 2020 were classified using k-means clustering to identify areas with similar phenological patterns. This approach resulted in 10-meter resolution maps of rice field extent, intensity, and cropping calendars. Validation using very high-resolution street view images from Google Earth showed that the predicted map had an overall accuracy of 95.95%, with a kappa coefficient of 0.92. In addition, the predicted crop calendars agreed well with the local government’s granary data. The results show that the proposed phenology-based method is cost-effective and can accurately map rice fields and growth stages over large areas. The information will be helpful in measuring the achievement of self-sufficiency in rice production and estimates of methane emissions from rice cultivation.

Mapping Crop Distribution Patterns and Changes in China from 2000 to 2015 by Fusing Remote-Sensing, Statistics, and Knowledge-Based Crop Phenology. REMOTE SENSING 2022. Abstract
Maps of different kinds of crops offer information about both crop distribution and crop mix, which support analyses on food security, environmental change, and climate change. Despite the growing capability for mapping specific crops, the majority of studies have focused on a few dominant crops, whereas maps with a greater diversity of crops lack research. Combining cropping seasons derived from MODIS EVI data, regional crop calendar data, and agricultural statistical surveys, we developed an allocation model to map 14 major crops at a 1 km resolution across China for the years 2000, 2010, and 2015. The model was verified based on the fitness between the area of the three typical combinations of region, crop/crop group derived from remote sensing data, and statistical data. The R2, indicating fitness, ranged from 0.51 to 0.75, with a higher value for the crops distributed in plain regions and a lower value in regions with topographically diverse landscapes. Within the same combination of region and crop/crop group, the larger harvest area a province has, the higher its fitness, suggesting an overall reliable result at the national level. A comparison of paddy rice between our results and the National Land Use/Cover Database of China showed a relatively high R2 and slope of fitness (0.67 and 0.71, respectively). Compared with the commonly used average allocation model, and without lending cropping season information, the diversity index of the results from our model is about 30% higher, indicating crop maps with greater spatial details. According to the spatial distribution analysis of the four main crops, the grids showing decreased trends accounted for 74.92%, 57.32%, and 59.00% of the total changed grid for wheat, rice, and soybean crops, respectively, while accounting for only 37.71% for maize. The resulting data sets can be used to improve assessments for nutrient security and sustainability of cropping systems, as well as their resilience in a changing climate.

Abstract
As a common natural disaster, drought can significantly affect the agriculture productivity and human life. Compared to Southeast China, Northwest China is short of water year-round and is the most frequent drought disaster area in China. Currently, there are still many controversial issues in drought monitoring of Northwest China in recent decades. To further understand the causes of changes in drought in Northwest China, we chose Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia provinces (SGN) as our study area. We compared the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought intensity and frequency in Northwest China from 2003 to 2020 showed by the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI), Vegetation Health Index (VHI), Normalized Vegetation Supply Water Index (NVSWI), Soil Moisture Condition Index (SMCI), and Soil Moisture Agricultural Drought Index (SMADI). All of these indices showed a wetting trend in the SGN area from 2003 to 2020. The wetting trend of the VCI characterization is the most obvious (R2 = 0.9606, p < 0.05): During the period 2003–2020, the annual average value of the VCI in the SGN region increased from 28.33 to 71.61, with a growth rate of 153.57%. The TCI showed the weakest trend of wetting (R2 = 0.0087), with little change in the annual average value in the SGN region. The results of the Mann–Kendall trend test of the TCI indicated that the SGN region experienced a non-significant (p > 0.05) wetting trend between 2003 and 2020. To explore the effectiveness of different drought indices, we analyzed the Pearson correlation between each drought index and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). The PDSI can not only consider the current water supply and demand situation but also consider the impact of the previous dry and wet conditions and their duration on the current drought situation. Using the PDSI as a reference, we can effectively verify the performance of each drought index. SPI-12 showed the best correlation with PDSI, with R values greater than 0.6 in almost all regions and p values less than 0.05 within one-half of the study area. SMADI had the weakest correlation with PDSI, with R values ranging −0.4~−0.2 and p values greater than 0.05 in almost all regions. The results of this study clarified the wetting trend in the SGN region from 2003 to 2020 and effectively analyzed the differences in each drought index. The frequency, duration, and severity of drought are continuously reduced; this helps us to have a more comprehensive understanding of the changes in recent decades and is of significance for the in-depth study of drought disasters in the future.

Abstract
The rapid development of the web geographic information system (Web GIS) has promoted new vitality in high school geography education, relieved the stress of geography teachers caused by software and technical problems, and made it possible for teachers to devote more energy to geography teaching and research activities. Natural disaster education is not only an important part of the geography curriculum, but also an indispensable aspect of education for sustainable development (ESD) for high school students. The application of Web GIS in the dynamic monitoring, forecast, and early warning of natural disasters is becoming more experienced. Therefore, the application of Web GIS in natural disaster education is quite feasible. How to build a bridge between them is the purpose of this paper. Thus, the paper selects ArcGIS Online, which is not limited by time and space, and analyzes several functions that apply it to geography teaching. These include smart mapping, story maps, 3D web maps, and mobile GIS. Meanwhile, it analyzes the knowledge structure of “natural disasters” in Chinese geography textbooks to guide the subsequent case design. Then, the Web GIS inquiry-based teaching case is formed based on “7.20 Zhengzhou Torrential Rain”. It contains knowledge about natural disasters and designs from many aspects, such as the causes, manifestations, and prevention and control of disasters. The discussion identifies a range of specific educational benefits of applying Web GIS to natural disaster education for teachers and schools. Ultimately, it can provide some reference values for geography teachers and other developers to explore curriculum resources and create quality educational models.

A Novel Spectral Index for Automatic Canola Mapping by Using Sentinel-2 Imagery. REMOTE SENSING 2022. [DOI: 10.3390/rs14051113] [Citation(s) in RCA: 15] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/04/2023]
Abstract
Because canola is a major oilseed crop, accurately determining its planting areas is crucial for ensuring food security and achieving UN 2030 sustainable development goals. However, when canola is extracted using remote-sensing data, winter wheat causes serious interference because it has a similar growth cycle and spectral reflectance characteristics. This interference seriously limits the classification accuracy of canola, especially in mixed planting areas. Here, a novel canola flower index (CFI) is proposed based on the red, green, blue, and near-infrared bands of Sentinel-2 images to improve the accuracy of canola mapping, based on the finding that spectral reflectance of canola on the red and green bands is higher than that of winter wheat during the canola flowering period. To investigate the potential of the CFI for extracting canola, the IsoData, support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF) classification methods were used to extract canola based on Sentinel-2 raw images and CFI images. The results show that the average overall accuracy and kappa coefficient based on CFI images were 94.77% and 0.89, respectively, which were 1.05% and 0.02, respectively, higher than those of the Sentinel-2 raw images. Then we found that a threshold of 0.14 on the CFI image could accurately distinguish canola from non-canola vegetation, which provides a solution for automatic mapping of canola. The overall classification accuracy and kappa coefficient of this threshold method were 96.02% and 0.92, which were very similar to those of the SVM and RF methods. Moreover, the advantage of the threshold classification method is that it reduces the dependence on training samples and has good robustness and high classification efficiency. Overall, this study shows that CFI and Sentinel-2 images provide a solution for automatic and accurate canola extraction.
