Comparison of Aerial and Ground 3D Point Clouds for Canopy Size Assessment in Precision Viticulture

Effects of different ground segmentation methods on the accuracy of UAV-based canopy volume measurements

The nonuniform distribution of fruit tree canopies in space poses a challenge for precision management. In recent years, with the development of Structure from Motion (SFM) technology, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing has been widely used to measure canopy features in orchards to balance efficiency and accuracy. A pipeline of canopy volume measurement based on UAV remote sensing was developed, in which RGB and digital surface model (DSM) orthophotos were constructed from captured RGB images, and then the canopy was segmented using U-Net, OTSU, and RANSAC methods, and the volume was calculated. The accuracy of the segmentation and the canopy volume measurement were compared. The results show that the U-Net trained with RGB and DSM achieves the best accuracy in the segmentation task, with mean intersection of concatenation (MIoU) of 84.75% and mean pixel accuracy (MPA) of 92.58%. However, in the canopy volume estimation task, the U-Net trained with DSM only achieved the best accuracy with Root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.410 m3, relative root mean square error (rRMSE) of 6.40%, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 4.74%. The deep learning-based segmentation method achieved higher accuracy in both the segmentation task and the canopy volume measurement task. For canopy volumes up to 7.50 m3, OTSU and RANSAC achieve an RMSE of 0.521 m3 and 0.580 m3, respectively. Therefore, in the case of manually labeled datasets, the use of U-Net to segment the canopy region can achieve higher accuracy of canopy volume measurement. If it is difficult to cover the cost of data labeling, ground segmentation using partitioned OTSU can yield more accurate canopy volumes than RANSAC.

Comparing Nadir and Oblique Thermal Imagery in UAV-Based 3D Crop Water Stress Index Applications for Precision Viticulture with LiDAR Validation

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) thermal imagery is rapidly becoming an essential tool in precision agriculture. Its ability to enable widespread crop status assessment is increasingly critical, given escalating water demands and limited resources, which drive the need for optimizing water use and crop yield through well-planned irrigation and vegetation management. Despite advancements in crop assessment methodologies, including the use of vegetation indices, 2D mapping, and 3D point cloud technologies, some aspects remain less understood. For instance, mission plans often capture nadir and oblique images simultaneously, which can be time- and resource-intensive, without a clear understanding of each image type's impact. This issue is particularly critical for crops with specific growth patterns, such as woody crops, which grow vertically. This research aims to investigate the role of nadir and oblique images in the generation of CWSI (Crop Water Stress Index) maps and CWSI point clouds, that is 2D and 3D products, in woody crops for precision agriculture. To this end, products were generated using Agisoft Metashape, ArcGIS Pro, and CloudCompare to explore the effects of various flight configurations on the final outcome, seeking to identify the most efficient workflow for each remote sensing product. A linear regression analysis reveals that, for generating 2D products (orthomosaics), combining flight angles is redundant, while 3D products (point clouds) are generated equally from nadir and oblique images. Volume calculations show that combining nadir and oblique flights yields the most accurate results for CWSI point clouds compared to LiDAR in terms of geometric representation (R2 = 0.72), followed by the nadir flight (R2 = 0.68), and, finally, the oblique flight (R2 = 0.54). Thus, point clouds offer a fuller perspective of the canopy. To our knowledge, this is the first time that CWSI point clouds have been used for precision viticulture, and this knowledge can aid farm managers, technicians, or UAV pilots in optimizing the capture of UAV image datasets in line with their specific goals.

New Supplementary Photography Methods after the Anomalous of Ground Control Points in UAV Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry

Recently, multirotor UAVs have been widely used in high-precision terrain mapping, cadastral surveys and other fields due to their low cost, flexibility, and high efficiency. Indirect georeferencing of ground control points (GCPs) is often required to obtain highly accurate topographic products such as orthoimages and digital surface models. However, in practical projects, GCPs are susceptible to anomalies caused by external factors (GCPs covered by foreign objects such as crops and cars, vandalism, etc.), resulting in a reduced availability of UAV images. The errors associated with the loss of GCPs are apparent. The widely used solution of using natural feature points as ground control points often fails to meet the high accuracy requirements. For the problem of control point anomalies, this paper innovatively presents two new methods of completing data fusion by supplementing photos via UAV at a later stage. In this study, 72 sets of experiments were set up, including three control experiments for analysis. Two parameters were used for accuracy assessment: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Multiscale Model to Model Cloud Comparison (M3C2). The study shows that the two new methods can meet the reference accuracy requirements in horizontal direction and elevation direction (RMSEX = 70.40 mm, RMSEY = 53.90 mm, RMSEZ = 87.70 mm). In contrast, the natural feature points as ground control points showed poor accuracy, with RMSEX = 94.80 mm, RMSEY = 68.80 mm, and RMSEZ = 104.40 mm for the checkpoints. This research considers and solves the problems of anomalous GCPs in the photogrammetry project from a unique perspective of supplementary photography, and proposes two new methods that greatly expand the means of solving the problem. In UAV high-precision projects, they can be used as an effective means to ensure accuracy when the GCP is anomalous, which has significant potential for application promotion. Compared with previous methods, they can be applied in more scenarios and have higher compatibility and operability. These two methods can be widely applied in cadastral surveys, geomorphological surveys, heritage conservation, and other fields.
