The Cross-Border Transport of PM2.5 from the Southeast Asian Biomass Burning Emissions and Its Impact on Air Pollution in Yunnan Plateau, Southwest China

The multi-year contribution of Indo-China peninsula fire emissions to aerosol radiation forcing in southern China during 2013-2019

Fire emissions in Southeast Asia transported to southern China every spring (March-May), influencing not only the air quality but also the weather and climate. However, the multi-year variations and magnitude of this impact on aerosol radiation forcing in southern China remain unclear. Here, we quantified the multi-year contributions of fire emissions in Indo-China Peninsula (ICP) region to aerosol radiation forcing in the various southern Chinese provinces during the fire season (March-May) of 2013-2019 combining the 3-dimension chemical transport model and the Column Radiation Model (CRM) simulations. The models' evaluations showed they reasonably capture the temporal and spatial distribution of surface aerosol concentrations and column aerosol optical properties over the study regions. The fire emissions over the ICP region were found to increase the aerosol optical depth (AOD) value by 0.1 (15 %) and reduce the single scattering albedo (SSA) in three southern regions of China (Yunnan-YN, Guangxi-GX, and Guangdong-GD from west to east), owing to increases in the proportions of black carbon (BC, 0.4 % ± 0.1 %) and organic carbon (OC, 3.0 % ± 0.9 %) within the aerosol compositions. The transported smoke aerosols cooled surface but heated the atmosphere in the southern China regions, with the largest mean reduction of -5 Wm-2 (-3 %) in surface shortwave radiation forcing and the maximum daily contributions of about -15 Wm-2 (-15 %) to the atmosphere radiation forcing in the GX region, followed by the GD and YN regions. The impacts of ICP fire emissions on aerosol optical and radiative parameters declined during 2013-2019, with the highest rate of 0.393 ± 0.478 Wm-2 yr-1 in the GX for the shortwave radiation forcing in the atmosphere. Besides, their yearly changes in the contribution were consistent with the annual fire emissions in the ICP region. Such strong radiative perturbations of ICP fire emissions were expected to influence regional meteorology in southern China and should be considered in the climate simulations.

Assessing local and transboundary fine particulate matter pollution and sectoral contributions in Southeast Asia during haze months of 2015-2019

While previous studies have investigated haze events over Southeast Asia (SEA), local and transboundary contributions of various emission sources to haze months over the entire SEA have yet to be assessed comprehensively and systematically. We utilized the Particle Source Apportionment Technique (PSAT) to quantify the spatial local, transboundary, and sectoral contributions to PM2.5 over SEA during the haze months of 2015-2019. Results show that local emission contributions accounted for 56.1 % ~ 94.2 % of PM2.5 in Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. Transboundary contributions (23.1 % ~ 57.6 %) from Indonesia notably influenced maritime SEA. Vietnam (15.6 % ~ 39.1 %) and super-regional (17.0 % ~ 34.3 %) contributions outside the SEA exerted remarkable impacts on mainland SEA. Among different sectors, fire emissions contributed the most to PM2.5 over maritime SEA (23.0 % ~ 68.6 %) during the studied haze months, whereas residential and other emissions were the main contributors to mainland SEA (27.2 % ~ 36.7 %). Regarding the source species, primary PM2.5 accounted for the majority of PM2.5. VOC and SO2 composed most of the secondary PM2.5 due to massive VOC emissions in the region and the priority reaction of NH3 with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to form ammonium sulfate. Besides, the intensified haze months in Oct 2015 and Sep 2019 were characterized by more intensive fire emissions in the region and the climatic variability-induced meteorological effects that provided favorable condition for transboundary air pollution (56.9 % and 44.9 %, respectively, for maritime SEA, as well as 46.0 % and 37.7 %, respectively, for mainland SEA in the two studied haze months). The haze months can be attributed to the notable drought conditions amidst global climatic phenomena such as El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) in Oct 2015 and Sep 2019, respectively.

The impact of biomass burning occurred in the Indo-China Peninsula on PM2.5 and its spatiotemporal characteristics over Yunnan Province

Being one of the most serious biomass burning regions in the world, the air pollution caused by spring combustion in the Indo-China Peninsula (ICP) has already had an impact on Yunnan Province's beautiful environment and excellent air quality to some extent. In this study, considering the differences in geographical location and topography of Yunnan, we used the K-Means algorithm to divide it into five clustering zones according to the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of PM2.5. Then this study explored the spatial and temporal characteristics of pollution in Yunnan Province and biomass combustion in ICP based on the multi-source data such as MOD14A1, GDAS1, and ground-based PM2.5 data, and used HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) pollution tracer analysis and other data statistical methods. The results show that the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of PM2.5 in Yunnan Province show large differences within each clustering zone (CZ). Spatially, CZ 2 has better air quality throughout the year, and the areas with higher PM2.5 are mainly in CZ 1 and CZ 3. Temporally, the months with higher concentration values were mainly from February to April, and also this period owed high biomass burning activities in the ICP, which resulted in pollution values exceeding 60 μg/m3 within certain CZs. Finally, the results of the pollution tracer analysis showed that within CZs other than CZ 2, the contribution due to the burning in the ICP was variable, and that the countries with a high contribution of pollution to Yunnan Province were Myanmar, and the other sources of pollution are mainly caused by local and neighbouring anthropogenic activities. Therefore, based on overall improvement of air quality, Yunnan Province is necessary to prevent and control not only the pollutants from the ICP from February to April, but also the pollution caused by the emissions from rapid economic development.
