The Classification Method Study of Crops Remote Sensing with Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and Google Earth Engine

Surface water monitoring from 1984 to 2021 based on Landsat time-series images and Google Earth Engine

Dynamic monitoring of surface water bodies is essential for understanding global climate change and the impact of human activities on water resources. Satellite remote sensing is characterized by large-scale monitoring, timely updates, and simplicity, and it has become an important means of obtaining the distribution of surface water bodies. This study is based on a long time-series Landsat satellite images and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, focusing on Anhui Province in China, and proposes a method for extracting surface water that combines water indices, Bias-Corrected Fuzzy Clustering Method (BCFCM), and OTSU threshold segmentation. The spatial distribution of surface water in Anhui Province was obtained from 1984 to 2021, and further analysis was conducted on the spatiotemporal characteristics of surface water in each city and three major river basins within the province. The results indicated that the overall accuracy of water extraction in this study was 94.06 %. Surface water in Anhui was most abundant in 1998 and least in 2001, with more distribution in the south than in the north. Northern Anhui is dominated by rivers, while southern Anhui has more lakes. Permanent surface water with an inundation frequency of above 75 % covered approximately 4341 km2, accounting for 32.03 % of the total water, while seasonal water with an inundation frequency between 5 % and 75 % covered about 6661 km2, accounting for 49.15 % of the total water, others were considered temporary surface water. By comparing our results with the global annual surface water released by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), we found that our study performed better in extracting lakes and rivers in terms of completeness, but the extraction results for aquaculture areas were slightly less than the JRC dataset. Overall, the long-term surface water dataset established in this study can effectively supplement the existing datasets and provide important references for regional water resource investigation, management, as well as flood monitoring.

A high-precision oasis dataset for China from remote sensing images

High-resolution oasis maps are imperative for understanding ecological and socio-economic development of arid regions. However, due to the late establishment and relatively niche nature of the oasis discipline, there are no high-precision datasets related to oases in the world to date. To fill this gap, detailed visual interpretation of remote sensing images on Google Earth Professional or Sentinel-2 was conducted in summer 2020, and for the first time, a high-precision dataset of China's oases (abbreviation HDCO) with a resolution of 1 meter was constructed. HDCO comprises 1,466 oases with a total area of 277,375.56 km2. The kappa coefficient for this dataset validated by the field survey was 0.8686 and the AUC value for the ROC curve was 0.935. In addition, information on the geographic coordinates, climatic conditions, major landforms, and hydrological features of each oasis was added to the attribute table of the dataset. This dataset enables researchers to quantitatively monitor location and area of oases, fosters exploration of the relationship between oases and human under climate change and urbanization.

Extraction of Lilium davidii var. unicolor Planting Information Based on Deep Learning and Multi-Source Data

Accurate extraction of crop acreage is an important element of digital agriculture. This study uses Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-1, and DEM as data sources to construct a multidimensional feature dataset encompassing spectral features, vegetation index, texture features, terrain features, and radar features. The Relief-F algorithm is applied for feature selection to identify the optimal feature dataset. And the combination of deep learning and the random forest (RF) classification method is utilized to identify lilies in Qilihe District and Yuzhong County of Lanzhou City, obtain their planting structure, and analyze their spatial distribution characteristics in Gansu Province. The findings indicate that terrain features significantly contribute to ground object classification, with the highest classification accuracy when the number of features in the feature dataset is 36. The precision of the deep learning classification method exceeds that of RF, with an overall classification accuracy and kappa coefficient of 95.9% and 0.934, respectively. The Lanzhou lily planting area is 137.24 km2, and it primarily presents a concentrated and contiguous distribution feature. The study's findings can serve as a solid scientific foundation for Lanzhou City's lily planting structure adjustment and optimization and a basis of data for local lily yield forecasting, development, and application.

CerealNet: A Hybrid Deep Learning Architecture for Cereal Crop Mapping Using Sentinel-2 Time-Series

Remote sensing-based crop mapping has continued to grow in economic importance over the last two decades. Given the ever-increasing rate of population growth and the implications of multiplying global food production, the necessity for timely, accurate, and reliable agricultural data is of the utmost importance. When it comes to ensuring high accuracy in crop maps, spectral similarities between crops represent serious limiting factors. Crops that display similar spectral responses are notorious for being nearly impossible to discriminate using classical multi-spectral imagery analysis. Chief among these crops are soft wheat, durum wheat, oats, and barley. In this paper, we propose a unique multi-input deep learning approach for cereal crop mapping, called “CerealNet”. Two time-series used as input, from the Sentinel-2 bands and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), were fed into separate branches of the LSTM-Conv1D (Long Short-Term Memory Convolutional Neural Networks) model to extract the temporal and spectral features necessary for the pixel-based crop mapping. The approach was evaluated using ground-truth data collected in the Gharb region (northwest of Morocco). We noted a categorical accuracy and an F1-score of 95% and 94%, respectively, with minimal confusion between the four cereal classes. CerealNet proved insensitive to sample size, as the least-represented crop, oats, had the highest F1-score. This model was compared with several state-of-the-art crop mapping classifiers and was found to outperform them. The modularity of CerealNet could possibly allow for injecting additional data such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) bands, especially when optical imagery is not available.

A Bibliometric and Visualized Analysis of Research Progress and Trends in Rice Remote Sensing over the Past 42 Years (1980–2021)

Rice is one of the most important food crops around the world. Remote sensing technology, as an effective and rapidly developing method, has been widely applied to precise rice management. To observe the current research status in the field of rice remote sensing (RRS), a bibliometric analysis was carried out based on 2680 papers of RRS published during 1980–2021, which were collected from the core collection of the Web of Science database. Quantitative analysis of the number of publications, top countries and institutions, popular keywords, etc. was conducted through the knowledge mapping software CiteSpace, and comprehensive discussions were carried out from the aspects of specific research objects, methods, spectral variables, and sensor platforms. The results revealed that an increasing number of countries and institutions have conducted research on RRS and a great number of articles have been published annually, among which, China, the United States of America, and Japan were the top three and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, and Nanjing Agricultural University were the first three research institutions with the largest publications. Abundant interest was paid to “reflectance”, followed by “vegetation index” and “yield” and the specific objects mainly focused on growth, yield, area, stress, and quality. From the perspective of spectral variables, reflectance, vegetation index, and back-scattering coefficient appeared the most frequently in the frontiers. In addition to satellite remote sensing data and empirical models, unmanned air vehicle (UAV) platforms and artificial intelligence models have gradually become hot topics. This study enriches the readers’ understanding and highlights the potential future research directions in RRS.
