Wheat Fusarium Head Blight Automatic Non-Destructive Detection Based on Multi-Scale Imaging: A Technical Perspective

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a major threat to global wheat production. Recent reviews of wheat FHB focused on pathology or comprehensive prevention and lacked a summary of advanced detection techniques. Unlike traditional detection and management methods, wheat FHB detection based on various imaging technologies has the obvious advantages of a high degree of automation and efficiency. With the rapid development of computer vision and deep learning technology, the number of related research has grown explosively in recent years. This review begins with an overview of wheat FHB epidemic mechanisms and changes in the characteristics of infected wheat. On this basis, the imaging scales are divided into microscopic, medium, submacroscopic, and macroscopic scales. Then, we outline the recent relevant articles, algorithms, and methodologies about wheat FHB from disease detection to qualitative analysis and summarize the potential difficulties in the practicalization of the corresponding technology. This paper could provide researchers with more targeted technical support and breakthrough directions. Additionally, this paper provides an overview of the ideal application mode of the FHB detection technologies based on multi-scale imaging and then examines the development trend of the all-scale detection system, which paved the way for the fusion of non-destructive detection technologies of wheat FHB based on multi-scale imaging.

YOLOv8s-CGF: a lightweight model for wheat ear Fusarium head blight detection

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease that affects wheat production. Detecting FHB accurately and rapidly is crucial for improving wheat yield. Traditional models are difficult to apply to mobile devices due to large parameters, high computation, and resource requirements. Therefore, this article proposes a lightweight detection method based on an improved YOLOv8s to facilitate the rapid deployment of the model on mobile terminals and improve the detection efficiency of wheat FHB. The proposed method introduced a C-FasterNet module, which replaced the C2f module in the backbone network. It helps reduce the number of parameters and the computational volume of the model. Additionally, the Conv in the backbone network is replaced with GhostConv, further reducing parameters and computation without significantly affecting detection accuracy. Thirdly, the introduction of the Focal CIoU loss function reduces the impact of sample imbalance on the detection results and accelerates the model convergence. Lastly, the large target detection head was removed from the model for lightweight. The experimental results show that the size of the improved model (YOLOv8s-CGF) is only 11.7 M, which accounts for 52.0% of the original model (YOLOv8s). The number of parameters is only 5.7 × 106 M, equivalent to 51.4% of the original model. The computational volume is only 21.1 GFLOPs, representing 74.3% of the original model. Moreover, the mean average precision (mAP@0.5) of the model is 99.492%, which is 0.003% higher than the original model, and the mAP@0.5:0.95 is 0.269% higher than the original model. Compared to other YOLO models, the improved lightweight model not only achieved the highest detection precision but also significantly reduced the number of parameters and model size. This provides a valuable reference for FHB detection in wheat ears and deployment on mobile terminals in field environments.

UAV hyperspectral remote sensor images for mango plant disease and pest identification using MD-FCM and XCS-RBFNN

To diminish disease transmission together with promoting effective management techniques, it is crucial to monitor plant health and detect pathogens earlier. The initial part in reducing losses sourced from plant diseases is to make an accurate and earlier identification. Thus, the usage of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) sensors for surveying and assessing crops, orchards, and forests has rapidly elevated over the last decade, particularly for the stress management like water, diseases, nutrition deficits, and pests. Using Minkowski Distance-based Fuzzy C Means (MD-FCM) clustering and Xavier initialization-adapted Cosine Similarity-induced Radial Bias Function Neural Network (XCS-RBFNN) techniques, a UAV HS imaging remote sensor for Spatial and Temporal Resolution (STR) of mango plant disease and pest identification is proposed in this scheme. Collecting the input UAV source (image or video) is eventuated initially along with the Region of Interest (ROI) calculated which is followed by preprocessing. Leaf segmentation is eventuated using Logistic U-net after preprocessing. Next, MD-FCM performs clustering to cluster the diseased leaves and pests individually. The disease and pest characteristics are then retrieved separately and classified further. The requisite features are then chosen from the retrieved features utilizing the Levy Flight Distribution-produced Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (LFD-BOA). Finally, the XCS-RBFNN classifier is utilized to categorize the various diseases together with pests found in the UAV input source using the chosen features. The proposed framework's experimental findings are then compared to some prevailing schemes, with the results revealing that the proposed work outperforms other benchmark techniques.

Efficient Noninvasive FHB Estimation using RGB Images from a Novel Multiyear, Multirater Dataset

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most prevalent wheat diseases, causing substantial yield losses and health risks. Efficient phenotyping of FHB is crucial for accelerating resistance breeding, but currently used methods are time-consuming and expensive. The present article suggests a noninvasive classification model for FHB severity estimation using red-green-blue (RGB) images, without requiring extensive preprocessing. The model accepts images taken from consumer-grade, low-cost RGB cameras and classifies the FHB severity into 6 ordinal levels. In addition, we introduce a novel dataset consisting of around 3,000 images from 3 different years (2020, 2021, and 2022) and 2 FHB severity assessments per image from independent raters. We used a pretrained EfficientNet (size b0), redesigned as a regression model. The results demonstrate that the interrater reliability (Cohen's kappa, κ) is substantially lower than the achieved individual network-to-rater results, e.g., 0.68 and 0.76 for the data captured in 2020, respectively. The model shows a generalization effect when trained with data from multiple years and tested on data from an independent year. Thus, using the images from 2020 and 2021 for training and 2022 for testing, we improved the F1w score by 0.14, the accuracy by 0.11, κ by 0.12, and reduced the root mean squared error by 0.5 compared to the best network trained only on a single year's data. The proposed lightweight model and methods could be deployed on mobile devices to automatically and objectively assess FHB severity with images from low-cost RGB cameras. CountShoots: Automatic Detection and Counting of Slash Pine New Shoots Using UAV Imagery

The density of new shoots on pine trees is an important indicator of their growth and photosynthetic capacity. However, traditional methods to monitor new shoot density rely on manual and destructive measurements, which are labor-intensive and have led to fewer studies on new shoot density. Therefore, in this study, we present user-friendly software called CountShoots, which extracts new shoot density in an easy and convenient way using unmanned aerial vehicles based on the YOLOX and Slash Pine Shoot Counting Network (SPSC-net) models. This software mainly consists of 2 steps. Firstly, we deployed a modified YOLOX model to identify the tree species and location from complex RGB background images, which yielded a high recognition accuracy of 99.15% and 95.47%. These results showed that our model produced higher detection accuracy compared to YOLOv5, Efficientnet, and Faster-RCNN models. Secondly, we constructed an SPSC-net. This methodology is based on the CCTrans network, which outperformed DM-Count, CSR-net, and MCNN models, with the lowest mean squared error and mean absolute error results among other models (i.e., 2.18 and 1.47, respectively). To our best knowledge, our work is the first research contribution to identify tree crowns and count new shoots automatically in slash pine. Our research outcome provides a highly efficient and rapid user-interactive pine tree new shoot detection and counting system for tree breeding and genetic use purposes.
