Phenological Response of an Arizona Dryland Forest to Short-Term Climatic Extremes

Evaluation of Vegetation Indices and Phenological Metrics Using Time-Series MODIS Data for Monitoring Vegetation Change in Punjab, Pakistan

In arid and semi-arid regions, it is essential to monitor the spatiotemporal variability and dynamics of vegetation. Among other provinces of Pakistan, Punjab has produced a significant number of crops. Recently, Punjab, Pakistan, has been described as a global hotspot for extremes of climate change. In this study, the soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), normalized vegetation difference index (NDVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) were comprehensively evaluated to monitor vegetation change in Punjab, Pakistan. The time-series MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data of different periods were used. The mean annual variability of the above vegetation indices (VIs) from 2000 to 2019 was evaluated and analyzed. For each type of vegetation, two phenological metrics (i.e., for the start of the season and end of the season) were calculated and compared. The spatio-temporal image analysis of the mean annual vegetation indices revealed similar patterns and varying vegetation conditions. In the forests and vegetation areas with sparse vegetation, the EVI showed high uncertainty. The phenological metrics of all vegetation indices were consistent for most types of vegetation. However, the NDVI result had the greatest variance between the start and end of season. The lowest annual VI variability was mainly observed in the southern part of the study area (less than 10% of the study area) based on the statistical analysis of spatial variability. The mean annual spatial variability of NDVI was <20%, SAVI was 30%, and EVI ranged between 10–20%. More than 40% of the variability was observed in the NDVI and SAVI vegetation indices.

Phenology Patterns Indicate Recovery Trajectories of Ponderosa Pine Forests After High-Severity Fires

Post-fire recovery trajectories in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) forests of the southwestern United States are increasingly shifting away from pre-burn vegetation communities. This study investigated whether phenological metrics derived from a multi-decade remotely sensed imagery time-series could differentiate among grass, evergreen shrub, deciduous, or conifer-dominated replacement pathways. We focused on 10 fires that burned ponderosa pine forests in Arizona and New Mexico, USA before the year 2000. A total of 29 sites with discernable post-fire recovery signals were selected within high-severity burn areas. At each site, we used Google Earth Engine to derive time-series of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) signals from Landsat Thematic Mapper, Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus, and Operational Land Imager data from 1984 to 2017. We aggregated values to 8- and 16-day intervals, fit Savitzky–Golay filters to each sequence, and extracted annual phenology metrics of amplitude, base value, peak value, and timing of peak value in the TIMESAT analysis package. Results showed that relative to post-fire conditions, pre-burn ponderosa pine forests exhibit significantly lower mean NDVI amplitude (0.14 vs. 0.21), higher mean base NDVI (0.47 vs. 0.22), higher mean peak NDVI (0.60 vs. 0.43), and later mean peak NDVI (day of year 277 vs. 237). Vegetation succession pathways exhibit distinct phenometric characteristics as early as year 5 (amplitude) and as late as year 20 (timing of peak NDVI). This study confirms the feasibility of leveraging phenology metrics derived from long-term imagery time-series to identify and monitor ecological outcomes. This information may be of benefit to land resource managers who seek indicators of future landscape compositions to inform management strategies.

Mangrove Phenology and Environmental Drivers Derived from Remote Sensing in Southern Thailand

Vegetation phenology is the annual cycle timing of vegetation growth. Mangrove phenology is a vital component to assess mangrove viability and includes start of season (SOS), end of season (EOS), peak of season (POS), and length of season (LOS). Potential environmental drivers include air temperature (Ta), surface temperature (Ts), sea surface temperature (SST), rainfall, sea surface salinity (SSS), and radiation flux (Ra). The Enhanced vegetation index (EVI) was calculated from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS, MOD13Q1) data over five study sites between 2003 and 2012. Four of the mangrove study sites were located on the Malay Peninsula on the Andaman Sea and one site located on the Gulf of Thailand. The goals of this study were to characterize phenology patterns across equatorial Thailand Indo-Malay mangrove forests, identify climatic and aquatic drivers of mangrove seasonality, and compare mangrove phenologies with surrounding upland tropical forests. Our results show the seasonality of mangrove growth was distinctly different from the surrounding land-based tropical forests. The mangrove growth season was approximately 8–9 months duration, starting in April to June, peaking in August to October and ending in January to February of the following year. The 10-year trend analysis revealed significant delaying trends in SOS, POS, and EOS for the Andaman Sea sites but only for EOS at the Gulf of Thailand site. The cumulative rainfall is likely to be the main factor driving later mangrove phenologies.

A Rigorously-Weighted Spatiotemporal Fusion Model with Uncertainty Analysis

Interest has been growing with regard to the use of remote sensing data characterized by a fine spatial resolution and frequent coverage for the monitoring of land surface dynamics. However, current satellite sensors are fundamentally limited by a trade-off between their spatial and temporal resolutions. Spatiotemporal fusion thus provides a feasible solution to overcome this limitation, and many blending algorithms have been developed. Among them, the popular spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM) is based on a weighted function; however, it uses an ad hoc approach to estimate the weights of surrounding similar pixels. Additionally, an uncertainty analysis of the predicted result is not provided in the STARFM or any other fusion algorithm. This paper proposes a rigorously-weighted spatiotemporal fusion model (RWSTFM) based on geostatistics to blend the surface reflectances of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. The RWSTFM, which is based on ordinary kriging, derives the weights in terms of a fitted semivariance-distance relationship and calculates the estimation variance, which is a measure of the prediction uncertainty. The RWSTFM was tested using three datasets and compared with two commonly-used spatiotemporal reflectance fusion algorithms: the STARFM and the flexible spatiotemporal data fusion (FSDAF) method. The fusion results show that the proposed RWSTFM consistently outperformed the other algorithms both visually and quantitatively. Additionally, more than 70% of the squared error was accounted for by the estimation variance of the RWSTFM for all three of the datasets.
