Assessment of the Suomi NPP VIIRS Land Surface Albedo Data Using Station Measurements and High-Resolution Albedo Maps

Study on Spatial and Temporal Characteristics of Surface Albedo at the Northern Edge of the Badain Jaran Desert Based on C + STNLFFM Model

Obtaining surface albedo data with high spatial and temporal resolution is essential for measuring the factors, effects, and change mechanisms of regional land-atmosphere interactions in deserts. In order to obtain surface albedo data with higher accuracy and better applicability in deserts, we used MODIS and OLI as data sources, and calculated the daily surface albedo data, with a spatial resolution of 30 m, of Guaizi Lake at the northern edge of the Badain Jaran Desert in 2016, using the Spatial and Temporal Non-Local Filter-based Fusion Model (STNLFFM) and topographical correction model (C model). We then compared the results of STNLFFM and C + STNLFFM for fusion accuracy, and for spatial and temporal distribution differences in surface albedo over different underlying surfaces. The results indicated that, compared with STNLFFM surface albedo and MODIS surface albedo, the relative error of C + STNLFFM surface albedo decreased by 2.34% and 3.57%, respectively. C + STNLFFM can improve poor applicability of MODIS in winter, and better responds to the changes in the measured value over a short time range. After the correction of the C model, the spatial difference in surface albedo over different underlying surfaces was enhanced, and the spatial differences in surface albedo between shifting dunes and semi-shifting dunes, fixed dunes and saline-alkali land, and the Gobi and saline-alkali land were significant. C + STNLFFM maintained the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of STNLFFM surface albedo, but the increase in regional aerosol concentration and thickness caused by frequent dust storms weakened the spatial difference in surface albedo over different underlying surfaces in March, which led to the overcorrection of the C model.

Impact of Image-Processing Routines on Mapping Glacier Surface Facies from Svalbard and the Himalayas Using Pixel-Based Methods

Glacier surface facies are valuable indicators of changes experienced by a glacial system. The interplay of accumulation and ablation facies, followed by intermixing with dust and debris, as well as the local climate, all induce observable and mappable changes on the supraglacial terrain. In the absence or lag of continuous field monitoring, remote sensing observations become vital for maintaining a constant supply of measurable data. However, remote satellite observations suffer from atmospheric effects, resolution disparity, and use of a multitude of mapping methods. Efficient image-processing routines are, hence, necessary to prepare and test the derivable data for mapping applications. The existing literature provides an application-centric view for selection of image processing schemes. This can create confusion, as it is not clear which method of atmospheric correction would be ideal for retrieving facies spectral reflectance, nor are the effects of pansharpening examined on facies. Moreover, with a variety of supervised classifiers and target detection methods now available, it is prudent to test the impact of variations in processing schemes on the resultant thematic classifications. In this context, the current study set its experimental goals. Using very-high-resolution (VHR) WorldView-2 data, we aimed to test the effects of three common atmospheric correction methods, viz. Dark Object Subtraction (DOS), Quick Atmospheric Correction (QUAC), and Fast Line-of-Sight Atmospheric Analysis of Hypercubes (FLAASH); and two pansharpening methods, viz. Gram–Schmidt (GS) and Hyperspherical Color Sharpening (HCS), on thematic classification of facies using 12 supervised classifiers. The conventional classifiers included: Mahalanobis Distance (MHD), Maximum Likelihood (MXL), Minimum Distance to Mean (MD), Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), and Winner Takes All (WTA). The advanced/target detection classifiers consisted of: Adaptive Coherence Estimator (ACE), Constrained Energy Minimization (CEM), Matched Filtering (MF), Mixture-Tuned Matched Filtering (MTMF), Mixture-Tuned Target-Constrained Interference-Minimized Filter (MTTCIMF), Orthogonal Space Projection (OSP), and Target-Constrained Interference-Minimized Filter (TCIMF). This experiment was performed on glaciers at two test sites, Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway; and Chandra–Bhaga basin, Himalaya, India. The overall performance suggested that the FLAASH correction delivered realistic reflectance spectra, while DOS delivered the least realistic. Spectra derived from HCS sharpened subsets seemed to match the average reflectance trends, whereas GS reduced the overall reflectance. WTA classification of the DOS subsets achieved the highest overall accuracy (0.81). MTTCIMF classification of the FLAASH subsets yielded the lowest overall accuracy of 0.01. However, FLAASH consistently provided better performance (less variable and generally accurate) than DOS and QUAC, making it the more reliable and hence recommended algorithm. While HCS-pansharpened classification achieved a lower error rate (0.71) in comparison to GS pansharpening (0.76), neither significantly improved accuracy nor efficiency. The Ny-Ålesund glacier facies were best classified using MXL (error rate = 0.49) and WTA classifiers (error rate = 0.53), whereas the Himalayan glacier facies were best classified using MD (error rate = 0.61) and WTA (error rate = 0.45). The final comparative analysis of classifiers based on the total error rate across all atmospheric corrections and pansharpening methods yielded the following reliability order: MXL > WTA > MHD > ACE > MD > CEM = MF > SAM > MTMF = TCIMF > OSP > MTTCIMF. The findings of the current study suggested that for VHR visible near-infrared (VNIR) mapping of facies, FLAASH was the best atmospheric correction, while MXL may deliver reliable thematic classification. Moreover, an extensive account of the varying exertions of each processing scheme is discussed, and could be transferable when compared against other VHR VNIR mapping methods.

Developing Land Surface Directional Reflectance and Albedo Products from Geostationary GOES-R and Himawari Data: Theoretical Basis, Operational Implementation, and Validation

The new generation of geostationary satellite sensors is producing an unprecedented amount of Earth observations with high temporal, spatial and spectral resolutions, which enable us to detect and assess abrupt surface changes. In this study, we developed the land surface directional reflectance and albedo products from Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite-R (GOES-R) Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) data using a method that was prototyped with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data in a previous study, and was also tested with data from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard Himawari-8. Surface reflectance is usually retrieved through atmospheric correction that requires the input of aerosol optical depth (AOD). We first estimated AOD and the surface bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) model parameters simultaneously based on an atmospheric radiative transfer formulation with surface anisotropy, and then calculated the “blue-sky” surface broadband albedo and directional reflectance. This algorithm was implemented operationally by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to generate the GOES-R land surface albedo product suite with a daily updated clear-sky satellite observation database. The “operational” land surface albedo estimation from ABI and AHI data was validated against ground measurements at the SURFRAD sites and OzFlux sites and compared with the existing satellite products, including MODIS, Visible infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS), and Global Land Surface Satellites (GLASS) albedo products, where good agreement was found with bias values of −0.001 (ABI) and 0.020 (AHI) and root-mean-square-errors (RMSEs) less than 0.065 for the hourly albedo estimation. Directional surface reflectance estimation, evaluated at more than 74 sites from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), was proven to be reliable as well, with an overall bias very close to zero and RMSEs within 0.042 (ABI) and 0.039 (AHI). Results show that the albedo and reflectance estimation can satisfy the NOAA accuracy requirements for operational climate and meteorological applications.

Evaluating the Spatial Representativeness of the MODerate Resolution Image Spectroradiometer Albedo Product (MCD43) at AmeriFlux Sites

Land surface albedo is a key parameter in regulating surface radiation budgets. The gridded remote sensing albedo product often represents information concerning an area larger than the nominal spatial resolution because of the large viewing angles of the observations. It is essential to quantify the spatial representativeness of remote sensing products to better guide the sampling strategy in field experiments and match products from different sources. This study quantifies the spatial representativeness of the MODerate Resolution Image Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (collection V006) 500 m daily albedo product (MCD43A3) using the high-resolution product as intermediate data for different land cover types. A total of 1820 paired high-resolution Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and coarse-resolution (MODIS) albedo data from five land cover types were used. The TM albedo data was used as the spatial-complete high resolution data to evaluate the spatial representativeness of the MODIS albedo product. Semivarioagrams were estimated from 30 m Landsat data at different spatial scales. Surface heterogeneity was evaluated with sill value and relative coefficient of variation. The 30 m Landsat albedo data was aggregated to 450 m–1800 m using two different methods and compared with MODIS albedo product. The spatial representativeness of MODIS albedo product was determined according to the surface heterogeneity and the consistency of MODIS data and the aggregated TM value. Results indicated that for evergreen broadleaf forests, deciduous broadleaf forests, open shrub lands, woody savannas and grasslands, the MODIS 500 m daily albedo product represents a spatial scale of approximately 630 m. For mixed forests and croplands, the representative spatial scale was approximately 690 m. The difference obtained was primarily because of the complexity of the landscape structure. For mixed forests and croplands, the structure of the landscape was relatively complex due to the presence of different forest and plant types in the pixel area, whereas the other landscape structures were considerably simpler.
