Improving Soil Moisture Estimation with a Dual Ensemble Kalman Smoother by Jointly Assimilating AMSR-E Brightness Temperature and MODIS LST

Basin Scale Soil Moisture Estimation with Grid SWAT and LESTKF Based on WSN

This research utilized in situ soil moisture observations in a coupled grid Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Parallel Data Assimilation Framework (PDAF) data assimilation system, resulting in significant enhancements in soil moisture estimation. By incorporating Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) data (WATERNET), the method captured and integrated local soil moisture characteristics, thereby improving regional model state estimations. The use of varying observation search radii with the Local Error-subspace Transform Kalman Filter (LESTKF) resulted in improved spatial and temporal assimilation performance, while also considering the impact of observation data uncertainties. The best performance (improvement of 0.006 m3/m3) of LESTKF was achieved with a 20 km observation search radii and 0.01 m3/m3 observation standard error. This study assimilated wireless sensor network data into a distributed model, presenting a departure from traditional methods. The high accuracy and resolution capabilities of WATERNET's regional soil moisture observations were crucial, and its provision of multi-layered soil temperature and moisture observations presented new opportunities for integration into the data assimilation framework, further enhancing hydrological state estimations. This study's implications are broad and relevant to regional-scale water resource research and management, particularly for freshwater resource scheduling at small basin scales.

Adaptive Conditional Bias-Penalized Kalman Filter for Improved Estimation of Extremes and Its Approximation for Reduced Computation

Kalman filter (KF) and its variants and extensions are wildly used for hydrologic prediction in environmental science and engineering. In many data assimilation applications of Kalman filter (KF) and its variants and extensions, accurate estimation of extreme states is often of great importance. When the observations used are uncertain, however, KF suffers from conditional bias (CB) which results in consistent under- and overestimation of extremes in the right and left tails, respectively. Recently, CB-penalized KF, or CBPKF, has been developed to address CB. In this paper, we present an alternative formulation based on variance-inflated KF to reduce computation and algorithmic complexity, and describe adaptive implementation to improve unconditional performance. For theoretical basis and context, we also provide a complete self-contained description of CB-penalized Fisher-like estimation and CBPKF. The results from one-dimensional synthetic experiments for a linear system with varying degrees of nonstationarity show that adaptive CBPKF reduces the root-mean-square error at the extreme tail ends by 20 to 30% over KF while performing comparably to KF in the unconditional sense. The alternative formulation is found to approximate the original formulation very closely while reducing computing time to 1.5 to 3.5 times of that for KF depending on the dimensionality of the problem. Hence, adaptive CBPKF offers a significant addition to the dynamic filtering methods for general application in data assimilation when the accurate estimation of extremes is of importance.

A Neural-Network Based Spatial Resolution Downscaling Method for Soil Moisture: Case Study of Qinghai Province

Currently, soil-moisture data extracted from microwave data suffer from poor spatial resolution. To overcome this problem, this study proposes a method to downscale the soil moisture spatial resolution. The proposed method establishes a statistical relationship between low-spatial-resolution input data and soil-moisture data from a land-surface model based on a neural network (NN). This statistical relationship is then applied to high-spatial-resolution input data to obtain high-spatial-resolution soil-moisture data. The input data include passive microwave data (SMAP, AMSR2), active microwave data (ASCAT), MODIS data, and terrain data. The target soil moisture data were collected from CLDAS dataset. The results show that the addition of data such as the land-surface temperature (LST), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the normalized shortwave-infrared difference bare soil moisture indices (NSDSI), the digital elevation model (DEM), and calculated slope data (SLOPE) to active and passive microwave data improves the retrieval accuracy of the model. Taking the CLDAS soil moisture data as a benchmark, the spatial correlation increases from 0.597 to 0.669, the temporal correlation increases from 0.401 to 0.475, the root mean square error decreases from 0.051 to 0.046, and the mean absolute error decreases from 0.041 to 0.036. Triple collocation was applied in the form of [NN, FY3C, GEOS-5] based on the extracted retrieved soil-moisture data to obtain the error variance and correlation coefficient between each product and the actual soil-moisture data. Therefore, we conclude that NN data, which have the lowest error variance (0.00003) and the highest correlation coefficient (0.811), are the most applicable to Qinghai Province. The high-spatial-resolution data obtained from the NN, CLDAS data, SMAP data, and AMSR2 data were correlated with the ground-station data respectively, and the result of better NN data quality was obtained. This analysis demonstrates that the NN-based method is a promising approach for obtaining high-spatial-resolution soil-moisture data.

Assimilating SMOS Brightness Temperature for Hydrologic Model Parameters and Soil Moisture Estimation with an Immune Evolutionary Strategy

Hydrological models play an essential role in data assimilation (DA) systems. However, it is a challenging task to acquire the distributed hydrological model parameters that affect the accuracy of the simulations at a grid scale. Remote sensing data provide an ideal observation for DA to estimate parameters and state variables. In this study, a special assimilation scheme was proposed to jointly estimate parameters and soil moisture (SM) by assimilating brightness temperature (TB) from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. Variable infiltration capacity (VIC) hydrological model and L-band microwave emission of the biosphere model (L-MEB) are coupled as model and observation operators, respectively. The scheme combines two stages of estimators, one for the static model parameters and the other for the dynamic state variables. The estimators approximate the posterior probability distribution of an unknown target through sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) sampling. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and immune evolution strategy are embedded in both stages to solve particle impoverishment problems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the scheme, the estimated SM sets are compared with in-situ observations and SMOS products in Maqu on the Tibetan Plateau. Specifically, the root mean square error decreased from 0.126 to 0.087 m3m−3 for surface SM, with a slight impact on the root zone. The temporal correlation between DA results and in-situ measurements increased to 0.808 and 0.755 for surface SM (+0.057) and root zone SM (+0.040), respectively. The results demonstrate that assimilating TB has tremendous potential as an approach to improve the estimation of distributed model parameters and SMs of surface and root zone at a grid scale, and the immune evolution strategy is effective for increasing the accuracy of approximation in sampling.
