Stress wave signal denoising using ensemble empirical mode decomposition and an instantaneous half period model

Image Reconstruction of Internal Defects in Wood Based on Segmented Propagation Rays of Stress Waves

In order to detect the size and shape of defects inside wood, an image reconstruction method based on segmented propagation rays of stress waves is proposed. The method uses sensors to obtain the stress wave velocity data by hanging around the timber equally, visualizes those data, and reconstructs the image of internal defects with the visualized propagation rays. The basis of the algorithm is precisely segmenting the rays to benefit the spatial interpolation. First, a ray segmentation algorithm using the elliptical neighborhood technique is proposed, which can be used to segment the rays and estimate the velocity values of segmented rays by the nearby original rays using elliptical zones. Second, a spatial interpolation algorithm utilizing a segmented ellipse according to the segmented rays is also proposed, which can be used to estimate the velocity value of a grid cell by the segmented ellipses corresponding to the nearby segmented rays. Then, the image of the internal defect inside the wood is reconstructed. Both simulation and experimental data were used to evaluate the proposed method, and the area and shape of the imaging results were analyzed. The comparison results show that the proposed method can produce high quality reconstructions with clear edges and high accuracy.

Significance of modified empirical mode decomposition for ECG denoising

The primary objective of the presented work is to exploit the power of modified empirical mode decomposition (M-EMD) for the denoising of ECG signals. It is well known that the ECG signals get corrupted by a number of noises during the recording process. Especially, during wireless ECG recording and ambulatory patient monitoring, the signal gets corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Over the years, several techniques have been proposed for ECG denoising. Among those, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and nonlocal means (NLM) algorithm are noted to be quite effective. Further, the NLM-based approach is better in retaining the morphological characteristics in comparison to the EMD. Consequently, the two approaches are effectively combined in this paper so that each one complements the other. In the proposed approach, the noisy ECG signal is first preprocessed using the NLM algorithm. This is followed by decomposition of the partially denoised output through M-EMD. The decomposed components are suitably thresholded and then reconstructed to obtain the final denoised signal. This largely addresses the issue of under-averaged regions noted in the case of NLM-based denoising. Furthermore, the proposed approach is noted to be superior to the other existing techniques.

Application of Ground-Penetrating Radar for Detecting Internal Anomalies in Tree Trunks with Irregular Contours

To assess the health conditions of tree trunks, it is necessary to estimate the layers and anomalies of their internal structure. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the internal part of tree trunks considering their irregular contour. In this respect, we used ground penetrating radar (GPR) for non-invasive detection of defects and deteriorations in living trees trunks. The Hilbert transform algorithm and the reflection amplitudes were used to estimate the relative dielectric constant. The point cloud data technique was applied as well to extract the irregular contours of trunks. The feasibility and accuracy of the methods were examined through numerical simulations, laboratory and field measurements. The results demonstrated that the applied methodology allowed for accurate characterizations of the internal inhomogeneity. Furthermore, the point cloud technique resolved the trunk well by providing high-precision coordinate information. This study also demonstrated that cross-section tomography provided images with high resolution and accuracy. These integrated techniques thus proved to be promising for observing tree trunks and other cylindrical objects. The applied approaches offer a great promise for future 3D reconstruction of tomographic images with radar wave.

A Cutting Pattern Recognition Method for Shearers Based on Improved Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition and a Probabilistic Neural Network

In order to guarantee the stable operation of shearers and promote construction of an automatic coal mining working face, an online cutting pattern recognition method with high accuracy and speed based on Improved Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (IEEMD) and Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) is proposed. An industrial microphone is installed on the shearer and the cutting sound is collected as the recognition criterion to overcome the disadvantages of giant size, contact measurement and low identification rate of traditional detectors. To avoid end-point effects and get rid of undesirable intrinsic mode function (IMF) components in the initial signal, IEEMD is conducted on the sound. The end-point continuation based on the practical storage data is performed first to overcome the end-point effect. Next the average correlation coefficient, which is calculated by the correlation of the first IMF with others, is introduced to select essential IMFs. Then the energy and standard deviation of the reminder IMFs are extracted as features and PNN is applied to classify the cutting patterns. Finally, a simulation example, with an accuracy of 92.67%, and an industrial application prove the efficiency and correctness of the proposed method.

Sensor-based vibration signal feature extraction using an improved composite dictionary matching pursuit algorithm

This paper presents a new method for a composite dictionary matching pursuit algorithm, which is applied to vibration sensor signal feature extraction and fault diagnosis of a gearbox. Three advantages are highlighted in the new method. First, the composite dictionary in the algorithm has been changed from multi-atom matching to single-atom matching. Compared to non-composite dictionary single-atom matching, the original composite dictionary multi-atom matching pursuit (CD-MaMP) algorithm can achieve noise reduction in the reconstruction stage, but it cannot dramatically reduce the computational cost and improve the efficiency in the decomposition stage. Therefore, the optimized composite dictionary single-atom matching algorithm (CD-SaMP) is proposed. Second, the termination condition of iteration based on the attenuation coefficient is put forward to improve the sparsity and efficiency of the algorithm, which adjusts the parameters of the termination condition constantly in the process of decomposition to avoid noise. Third, composite dictionaries are enriched with the modulation dictionary, which is one of the important structural characteristics of gear fault signals. Meanwhile, the termination condition of iteration settings, sub-feature dictionary selections and operation efficiency between CD-MaMP and CD-SaMP are discussed, aiming at gear simulation vibration signals with noise. The simulation sensor-based vibration signal results show that the termination condition of iteration based on the attenuation coefficient enhances decomposition sparsity greatly and achieves a good effect of noise reduction. Furthermore, the modulation dictionary achieves a better matching effect compared to the Fourier dictionary, and CD-SaMP has a great advantage of sparsity and efficiency compared with the CD-MaMP. The sensor-based vibration signals measured from practical engineering gearbox analyses have further shown that the CD-SaMP decomposition and reconstruction algorithm is feasible and effective.

A data-driven noise reduction method and its application for the enhancement of stress wave signals

Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) has been recently used to recover a signal from observed noisy data. Typically this is performed by partial reconstruction or thresholding operation. In this paper we describe an efficient noise reduction method. EEMD is used to decompose a signal into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The time intervals between two adjacent zero-crossings within the IMF, called instantaneous half period (IHP), are used as a criterion to detect and classify the noise oscillations. The undesirable waveforms with a larger IHP are set to zero. Furthermore, the optimum threshold in this approach can be derived from the signal itself using the consecutive mean square error (CMSE). The method is fully data driven, and it requires no prior knowledge of the target signals. This method can be verified with the simulative program by using Matlab. The denoising results are proper. In comparison with other EEMD based methods, it is concluded that the means adopted in this paper is suitable to preprocess the stress wave signals in the wood nondestructive testing.
