Smartphone-Operated Wireless Chemical Sensors: A Review

Wireless chemical sensors have been developed as a result of advances in chemical sensing and wireless communication technology. Because of their mobility and widespread availability, smartphones have been extensively combined with sensors such as hand-held detectors, sensor chips, and test strips for biochemical detection. Smartphones are frequently used as controllers, analyzers, and displayers for quick, authentic, and point-of-care monitoring, which may considerably streamline the design and lower the cost of sensing systems. This study looks at the most recent wireless and smartphone-supported chemical sensors. The review is divided into four different topics that emphasize the basic types of wireless smartphone-operated chemical sensors. According to a study of 114 original research publications published during recent years, market opportunities for wireless and smartphone-supported chemical sensor systems include environmental monitoring, healthcare and medicine, food quality, sport, and fitness. The issues and illustrations for each of the primary chemical sensors relevant to many application areas are covered. In terms of performance, the advancement of technologies related to chemical sensors will result in smaller and more lightweight, cost-effective, versatile, and durable devices. Given the limitations, we suggest that wireless and smartphone-supported chemical sensor systems play a significant role in the sensor Internet of Things.

Electrically Transduced Gas Sensors Based on Semiconducting Metal Oxide Nanowires

Semiconducting metal oxide-based nanowires (SMO-NWs) for gas sensors have been extensively studied for their extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio, high chemical and thermal stabilities, high sensitivity, and unique electronic, photonic and mechanical properties. In addition to improving the sensor response, vast developments have recently focused on the fundamental sensing mechanism, low power consumption, as well as novel applications. Herein, this review provides a state-of-art overview of electrically transduced gas sensors based on SMO-NWs. We first discuss the advanced synthesis and assembly techniques for high-quality SMO-NWs, the detailed sensor architectures, as well as the important gas-sensing performance. Relationships between the NWs structure and gas sensing performance are established by understanding general sensitization models related to size and shape, crystal defect, doped and loaded additive, and contact parameters. Moreover, major strategies for low-power gas sensors are proposed, including integrating NWs into microhotplates, self-heating operation, and designing room-temperature gas sensors. Emerging application areas of SMO-NWs-based gas sensors in disease diagnosis, environmental engineering, safety and security, flexible and wearable technology have also been studied. In the end, some insights into new challenges and future prospects for commercialization are highlighted.

A Glucose Monitoring System With Remote Data Access

A cost-effective portable glucose monitoring system with remote data access based on a novel e-oscilloscope was developed using a glucose biofuel cell and a capacitor circuit interfaced to an ESP8266 microcontroller programmed to convert the charge/discharge rates of the capacitor functioning as a transducer. The capacitor charge/discharge rates were converted into glucose concentration readings that is monitored remotely. The glucose monitoring system comprise a glucose biofuel cell, a charge pump circuit, a capacitor and an ESP microcontroller. The anode was fabricated by modifying a gold microwire with nanoporous colloidal platinum (Au-co-Pt) and the cathode was constructed using a mesh dense network of multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified with bilirubin oxidase, respectively. The glucose monitoring system showed sensitivity of 1.18 Hz/mM · cm² with a correlation coefficient of 0.9939 with increasing glucose concentration from 1 mM to 25 mM. In addition, the glucose monitoring system exhibited optimal operation at a pH of 7.4 and 37 °C, which is ideal for physiological glucose monitoring.

An IoT-Based Glucose Monitoring Algorithm to Prevent Diabetes Complications

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by blood glucose levels above normal limits. The impact of this disease on the population has increased in recent years. It is already a public health problem worldwide and one of the leading causes of death. Recently, several proposals have been developed for better and regular monitoring of glucose. However, theses proposals do not discard erroneous readings and they are not able to anticipate a critical condition. In this work, we propose an algorithm based on the double moving average supported by an IoT architecture to prevent possible complications in elderly patients. The algorithm uses historical readings to construct a series. Given a number of periods, it is possible to calculate averages of different subsets and trends for the next periods and, in this way, the prognosis is obtained. With the prognosis, it is possible to notify the doctor and relatives in advance about a possible critical condition in the patient. The aim of our work is to validate the architecture and prognosis algorithm used for elderly persons. Tests of the algorithm and the architecture were performed with different readings and it was shown that the system generated corresponding notifications before the glucose values were higher than those defined by the WHO (World Health Organization), thus avoiding unnecessary alarms.

White Paper on P4 Concepts for Pediatric Imaging

Over the past decade, innovations in the field of pediatric imaging have been based largely on single-center and retrospective studies, which provided limited advances for the benefit of pediatric patients. To identify opportunities for potential "quantum-leap" progress in the field of pediatric imaging, the ACR-Pediatric Imaging Research (PIR) Committee has identified high-impact research directions related to the P4 concept of predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory diagnosis and intervention. Input from 237 members of the Society for Pediatric Radiology was clustered around 10 priority areas, which are discussed in this article. Needs within each priority area have been analyzed in detail by ACR-PIR experts on these topics. By facilitating work in these priority areas, we hope to revolutionize the care of children by shifting our efforts from unilateral reaction to clinical symptoms, to interactive maintenance of child health.

Fabrication of Patterned Integrated Electrochemical Sensors

Fabrication of integrated electrochemical sensors is an important step towards realizing fully integrated and truly wireless platforms for many local, real-time sensing applications. Micro/nanoscale patterning of small area electrochemical sensor surfaces enhances the sensor performance to overcome the limitations resulting from their small surface area and thus is the key to the successful miniaturization of integrated platforms. We have demonstrated the microfabrication of electrochemical sensors utilizing top-down lithography and etching techniques on silicon and CMOS substrates. This choice of fabrication avoids the need of bottom-up techniques that are not compatible with established methods for fabricating electronics (e.g., CMOS) which form the industrial basis of most integrated microsystems. We present the results of applying microfabricated sensors to various measurement problems, with special attention to their use for continuous DNA and glucose sensing. Our results demonstrate the advantages of using micro- and nanofabrication techniques for the miniaturization and optimization of modern sensing platforms that employ well-established electronic measurement techniques.

Basic science research in pediatric radiology - how to empower the leading edge of our field

Basic science research aims to explore, understand and predict phenomena in the natural world. It spurs the discovery of fundamentally new principles and leads to new knowledge and new concepts. By comparison, applied research employs basic science knowledge toward practical applications. In the clinical realm, basic science research and applied research should be closely connected. Basic science discoveries can build the foundation for a broad range of practical applications and thereby bring major benefits to human health, education, environment and economy. This article explains how basic science research impacts our field, it describes examples of new research directions in pediatric imaging and it outlines current challenges that we need to overcome in order to enable the next groundbreaking discovery.

Recent advances in ZnO nanostructures and thin films for biosensor applications: review

Biosensors have shown great potential for health care and environmental monitoring. The performance of biosensors depends on their components, among which the matrix material, i.e., the layer between the recognition layer of biomolecule and transducer, plays a crucial role in defining the stability, sensitivity and shelf-life of a biosensor. Recently, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures and thin films have attracted much interest as materials for biosensors due to their biocompatibility, chemical stability, high isoelectric point, electrochemical activity, high electron mobility, ease of synthesis by diverse methods and high surface-to-volume ratio. ZnO nanostructures have shown the binding of biomolecules in desired orientations with improved conformation and high biological activity, resulting in enhanced sensing characteristics. Furthermore, compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology for constructing integrated circuits makes ZnO nanostructures suitable candidate for future small integrated biosensor devices. This review highlights recent advances in various approaches towards synthesis of ZnO nanostructures and thin films and their applications in biosensor technology.
