A real-time terahertz time-domain polarization analyzer with 80-MHz repetition-rate femtosecond laser pulses

Terahertz time-domain polarimetry (THz-TDP) based on the spinning E-O sampling technique: determination of precision and calibration

We have developed a terahertz time-domain polarimetry (THz-TDP) system by applying frequency modulation to electro-optic sampling detection in a nonlinear crystal. We characterized the precision of this system in determining the polarization angles to be 1.3° for fixed time delay, and 0.5° for complete time-domain waveform. Furthermore, we calculated the Jones matrix of the optical components used for beam propagation to calibrate the induced systematic error. The advantages of employing this calibration approach are demonstrated on a sapphire crystal investigated at different sample test positions in transmission configuration, and using high resistivity Si, AlN and quartz in reflection geometry. The new THz-TDP technique has the advantage of not using any external polarizers, and therefore is not constrained by their optical performance limitations, such as restricted bandwidths and frequency-dependent extinction ratio. Finally, the THz-TDP technique can be easily implemented on existing time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) systems.

Large-area photoconductive switches as emitters of terahertz pulses with fully electrically controlled linear polarization

Polarimetric measurements in the terahertz (THz) range have a wide range of applications in material science and physico-chemistry. Usually performed using mechanically controlled elements, such measurements are inherently limited in precision and acquisition rate. Here, we propose and realize an innovative concept of a THz pulse emitter, linearly polarized, which allows electrical continuous control of the polarization direction and modulation ability up to several tens of kHz. It consists in an interdigitated photoconductive switch with an intermixed sickle geometry, where the vertical and horizontal components of the electric field are intermixed at a subwavelength scale. We demonstrate that such an emitter permits control of the direction and amplitude emitted with an excellent degree of polarization up to 4 THz, which is estimated to be experimentally better than 98%. This work opens perspectives for sensitivity improvements in THz polarimetry with lock-in detection schemes.

A terahertz in-line polarization converter based on through-via connected double layer slot structures

A terahertz (THz) in-line polarization converter that yields a polarization conversion ratio as high as 99.9% is demonstrated at 1 THz. It has double-layer slot structures oriented in orthogonal directions that are electrically connected by 1/8-wavelngth-long through-via holes beside the slot structures. The slots on the front metal-plane respond to the incident THz wave with polarization orthogonal to the slots and generates a circulating surface current around the slots. The surface current propagates along a pair of through-via holes that function as a two-wire transmission line. The propagating current generates a surface current around the backside slot structures oriented orthogonal to the slot structures on the front metal layer. The circulating current generates a terahertz wave polarized orthogonal to the backside slot structures and the 90° polarization conversion is completed. The re-radiating THz wave with 90° converted polarization propagates in the same direction as the incident THz wave.

A matter of symmetry: terahertz polarization detection properties of a multi-contact photoconductive antenna evaluated by a response matrix analysis

While terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a well-established technique, polarization sensitive measurements are challenging due to the need of broadband polarization devices. Here, we characterize our recently introduced multi-contact photoconductive detector antenna with a response matrix analysis. We show that the lead lines attached to electrodes reduce the antenna symmetry and thereby influence the properties of the response matrices. With a wire grid polarizer, we simulate a sample influencing the polarization angle and the intensity of the incident THz pulse. Evaluating the measurements with the response matrix analysis, our results show a well agreement of the adjusted and measured polarization angles and intensities over a frequency range from 0.25 to 0.8 THz.
