Spontaneous Transfer of Droplets across a Microfluidic Liquid-Liquid Interface

The droplet transfer across an interface in a microchannel is extensively utilized in diverse fields; however, it is challenging to drive droplets to penetrate the interface at such a small scale. In this study, a novel flow pattern of droplet transfer is observed and the mechanism is investigated; accordingly, an accurate prediction equation for determining the critical condition of droplet transfer is proposed. Meanwhile, the liquid film entrainment is also observed, which leads to the formation of an oil-in-water-in-water system. This study serves as a valuable reference for further studies on the mechanism of droplet transfer and provides practical guidance for its industrial application.

Low-Cost System Based on Optical Sensor to Monitor Discharge of Industrial Oil in Irrigation Ditches

Uncontrolled dumping linked to agricultural vehicles causes an increase in the incorporation of oils into the irrigation system. In this paper, we propose a system based on an optical sensor to monitor oil concentration in the irrigation ditches. Our prototype is based on the absorption and dispersion of light. As a light source, we use Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) with different colours (white, yellow, blue, green, and red) and a photodetector as a sensing element. To test the sensor's performance, we incorporate industrial oils used by a diesel or gasoline engine, with a concentration from 0 to 0.20 mL_oil/cm². The experiment was carried out at different water column heights, 0 to 20 cm. According to our results, the sensor can differentiate between the presence or absence of diesel engine oil with any LED. For gasoline engine oil, the sensor quantifies its concentration using the red light source; concentrations greater than 0.1 mL_oil/cm² cannot be distinguished. The data gathered using the red LED has an average absolute error of 0.003 mL_oil/cm² (relative error of 15.8%) for the worst case, 15 cm. Finally, the blue LED generates different signals in the photodetector according to the type of oil. We developed an algorithm that combines (i) the white LED, to monitor the presence of oil; (ii) the blue LED, to identify if the oil comes from a gasoline or diesel engine; and (iii) the red LED, to monitor the concentration of oil used by a gasoline engine.

A Review of the Real-Time Monitoring of Fluid-Properties in Tubular Architectures for Industrial Applications

The real-time monitoring of fluid properties in tubular systems, such as viscosity and flow rate, is essential for industries utilizing liquid mediums. Nowadays, most studies of the fluid characteristics are performed off-line using laboratory facilities that can provide accurate results, yet they do not match the demanded industrial pace. Off-line measurements are ineffective and time-consuming. The available real-time monitoring sensors for fluid properties are generally destructive methods that produce significant and persistent damage to the tubular systems during the installation process. Others use huge and bulky invasive instrument methods that generate considerable pressure reduction and energy loss in tubular systems. For these drawbacks, industries centered their attention on non-invasive and non-destructive testing (NDT) methodologies, which are installed on the outer tubular surface to avoid flow disturbance and desist shutting down systems for installations. Although these sensors showed excellent achievement for monitoring and inspecting pipe health conditions, the performance was not convincing for monitoring the properties of fluids. This review paper presents an overview of the real-time monitoring of fluid properties in tubular systems for industrial applications, particularly for pipe monitoring sensors, viscosity, and flow measurements. Additionally, the different available sensing mechanisms and their advantages, drawbacks, and potentials are discussed.

Compact and self-aligned fluid refractometer based on the Doppler-induced self-mixing effect

The refractive index is one of the key parameters in non-invasive and label-free sensing applications. The past decade has witnessed various miniature optofluidic devices that offer several analytical functions with minuscule samples (picoliter or nanoliter) through the fusion of optics and microfluidic sciences. However, the realization of a compact, wide-range, and less-expensive refractometer is still a great challenge. In this paper, the authors have proposed a novel, to the best of our knowledge, self-mixing optical feedback interferometry (SM-OFI)-based refractometer that correlates the refractive index of a flowing liquid to the induced Doppler frequency shift. The proposed method was experimentally tested on the saline water and benzyl chloride and found close agreement with the literature results. The refractive indices of the saline water and benzyl chloride were measured to be 1.3346 and 1.54079, respectively, with a standard deviation of the order of 10^-5. The induced Doppler shift was linearly increased with the concentration of the liquid during the concentration profiling. Hence, the proposed method was also capable to profile the liquid concentration. The well-known compatibility and cost-effectiveness of the SM-OFI setup also support the proposed method for miniature applications. The compactness and the portability of the experimental setup also make it compatible in areas of application where the size of the analytical section is a decisive parameter, such as biosensors, particle manipulators, chemically active devices, lab-on-chip instruments, etc.

Self-Mixing Interferometry-Based Micro Flow Cytometry System for Label-Free Cells Classification

In this paper, we present a novel optical microfluidic cytometry scheme for label-free detection of cells that is based on the self-mixing interferometry (SMI) technique. This device enables simple, fast and accurate detection of the individual cell characteristics and efficient cell type classification. We also propose a novel parameter to classify the cell or particle size. Artificial polystyrene beads and human living cells were measured using this system, and the SMI signal properties were statistically evaluated. The capability of the proposed cytometer for cell type discrimination and size classification has been validated by the measurement results. Our study can provide a very simple technique for cell enumeration and classification without any extra devices such as high-speed camera, photomultiplier and spectrometer. Moreover, the fluorescence staining operation which is necessary in traditional flow cytometry methods is not required either in our system.

Optical Feedback Interferometry Based Microfluidic Sensing: Impact of Multi-Parameters on Doppler Spectral Properties

As a compact and simple sensing technique, optical feedback interferometry (OFI) can be a promising flowmetry method in various microfluidic applications. In this paper, OFI-based flowmetry sensor performance in a microscale flow scheme is studied theoretically and experimentally. An innovating model and different numerical methods are investigated, where the scattering light angle distribution is involved to predict the Doppler frequency distribution. For the first time, our model describes the influences of multiple OFI sensor system characteristics, such as flowing particle size, concentration, channel interface reflectivity and channel dimension, on the OFI signal spectral performances. In particular, a significant OFI signal level enhancement was achieved by deposing a high reflectivity gold layer on the rear channel interface due to the increased forward scattered light reflection. The consistent experimental validation associated with the simulations verifies this numerical simulation method’s reliability. The numerical methods presented here provide a new tool to design novel microfluidic reactors and sensors.

An Interdigital Capacitor for Microwave Heating at 25 GHz and Wideband Dielectric Sensing of nL Volumes in Continuous Microfluidics

This paper proposes a miniature microwave-microfluidic chip based on continuous microfluidics and a miniature interdigital capacitor (IDC). The novel chip consists of three individually accessible heaters, three platinum temperature sensors and two liquid cooling and mixing zones. The IDC is designed to achieve localized, fast and uniform heating of nanoliter volumes flowing through the microfluidic channel. The heating performance of the IDC located on the novel chip was evaluated using a fluorescent dye (Rhodamine B) diluted in demineralized water on a novel microwave-optical-fluidic (MOF) measurement setup. The MOF setup allows simultaneous microwave excitation of the IDC by means of a custom-made printed circuit board (connected to microwave equipment) placed in a top stage of a microscope, manipulation of liquid flowing through the channel located over the IDC with a pump and optical inspection of the same liquid flowing over the IDC using a fast camera, a light source and the microscope. The designed IDC brings a liquid volume of around 1.2 nL from room temperature to 100 °C in 21 ms with 1.58 W at 25 GHz. Next to the heating capability, the designed IDC can dielectrically sense the flowing liquid. Liquid sensing was evaluated on different concentration of water-isopropanol mixtures, and a reflection coefficient magnitude change of 6 dB was recorded around 8.1 GHz, while the minimum of the reflection coefficient magnitude shifted in the same frequency range for 60 MHz.
