Selectivity Enhancement in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Binding of Bisphenol A

Comparison and recent progress of molecular imprinting technology and dummy template molecular imprinting technology

Molecular imprinting technology for the preparation of polymers with specific molecular recognition function had become one of the current research hotspots. It has been widely applied in chromatographic separation, antibody and receptor mimetics, solid-phase extraction, bio-sensors, and other fields in the last decades. In this study, molecular imprinting technology was summarized from the points of templates and dummy templates, and four typical target analytes were selected to compare the differences between templates and dummy templates. The current status and prospects of molecular imprinting technology were also proposed.

Recognition of human hemoglobin with macromolecularly imprinted polymeric nanoparticles using non-covalent interactions

Hemoglobin (Hb) is the most abundant protein in the blood. It is vital for the living as oxygen carriers. Some of the very pure Hb-containing biological fluids are currently under clinical trial. However, the removal and purification of Hb from the blood are quite difficult, especially when it is at a low concentration level. In this study, the molecularly imprinted polymeric nanoparticles (MIPNs) were prepared using N-methacryloyl-histidine methyl ester (MAH) by mini-emulsion polymerization technique for specific binding of human hemoglobin (HHb). MIPNs in monosize form have a size of 152 ± 4 nm. They also have a high binding capacity (32.33 mg/g) of HHb. MIPNs retain 84% of the re-binding capacity for HHb after 10 cycles. The nanoparticles have 16 and 5 times higher binding capacity of HHb, respectively, in the presence of bovine serum albumin and lysozyme. Thanks to their high binding capacity and selectivity, MIPNs will allow them to be detected selectively for different target molecules. According to molecular docking, the main binding forces depend on hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces in the interaction within 5 Å around MAH molecule are observed through the amino acid residues of HHb at β1 and β2 subunit. The statistical mechanical analysis of docking showed that the free energy (ΔG) is -2732.14 kcal/mol, which indicates the interaction between MAH and HHb is energetically favorable at 298.15°K.

Employing molecularly imprinted polymers in the development of electroanalytical methodologies for antibiotic determination

Antibiotics, although being amazing compounds, need to be monitored in the environment and foodstuff. This is primarily to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance that may make them ineffective. Unsurprisingly, advances in analyticalsciences that can improve their determination are appreciated. Electrochemical techniques are known for their simplicity, sensitivity, portability and low-cost; however, they are often not selective enough without recurring to a discriminating element like an antibody. Molecular imprinting technology aims to create artificial tissues mimicking antibodies named molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), these retain the advantages of selectivity but without the typical disadvantages of biological material, like limited shelf-life and high cost. This manuscript aims to review all analytical methodologies for antibiotics, using MIPs, where the detection technique is electrochemical, like differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), square-wave voltammetry (SWV) or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). MIPs developed by electropolymerization (e-MIPs) were applied in about 60 publications and patents found in the bibliographic search, while MIPs developed by other polymerization techniques, like temperature assisted ("bulk") or photopolymerization, were limited to around 40. Published works covered the electroanalysis of a wide range of different antibiotics (β-lactams, tetracyclines, quinolones, macrolides, aminoglycosides, among other), in a wide range of matrices (food, environmental and biological).

Molecular Imprinting and Functional Polymers for All Transducers and Applications

The main challenge in developing a chemical sensor is the synthesis of recognition coatings, which are very sensitive and selective to analytes of interest. Molecular imprinting has proven to be the most innovative strategy for this purpose in functional polymer design in the last few decades. Moreover, the introduction of functional groups brings about new applications for all available transducers. Sensitivity and selectivity features of sensor coatings can be tuned by this approach. The strategy produces molecular cavities and interaction sites in sensor coatings. The synthesis of these tailored recognition materials is performed in an outstanding manner, saving time and the high costs of chemicals. Furthermore, intermolecular interactions between the analyte and chemical layers will generate sites that are complementary to the analyte. This procedure can easily be done, directly on a transducer surface, which entails engulfing the analyte by a prepolymer and crosslinking the polymeric material. These imprinted polymers form a robust recognition layer on the transducer surface, which cannot be peeled off and can withstand very harsh conditions, both in gaseous and liquid media. These recognition materials are very suitable, for small molecules and even large bioparticles.
