Abstract
Fingerprinting is the term used to describe a common indoor radio-mapping positioning technology that tracks moving objects in real time. To use this, a substantial number of measurement processes and workflows are needed to generate a radio-map. Accordingly, to minimize costs and increase the usability of such radio-maps, this study proposes an access-point (AP)-centered window (APCW) radio-map generation network (RGN). The proposed technique extracts parts of a radio-map in the form of a window based on AP floor plan coordinates to shorten the training time while enhancing radio-map prediction accuracy. To provide robustness against changes in the location of the APs and to enhance the utilization of similar structures, the proposed RGN, which employs an adversarial learning method and uses the APCW as input, learns the indoor space in partitions and combines the radio-maps of each AP to generate a complete map. By comparing four learning models that use different data structures as input based on an actual building, the proposed radio-map learning model (i.e., APCW-based RGN) obtains the highest accuracy among all models tested, yielding a root-mean-square error value of 4.01 dBm.

Abstract
In a Wi-Fi indoor positioning system (IPS), the performance of the IPS depends on the channel state information (CSI), which is often limited due to the multipath fading effect, especially in indoor environments involving multiple non-line-of-sight propagation paths. In this paper, we propose a novel IPS utilizing trajectory CSI observed from predetermined trajectories instead of the CSI collected at each stationary location; thus, the proposed method enables all the CSI along each route to be continuously encountered in the observation. Further, by using a generative adversarial network (GAN), which helps enlarge the training dataset, the cost of trajectory CSI collection can be significantly reduced. To fully exploit the trajectory CSI’s spatial and temporal information, the proposed IPS employs a deep learning network of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network–long short-term memory (1DCNN-LSTM). The proposed IPS was hardware-implemented, where digital signal processors and a universal software radio peripheral were used as a modem and radio frequency transceiver, respectively, for both access point and mobile device of Wi-Fi. We verified that the proposed IPS based on the trajectory CSI far outperforms the state-of-the-art IPS based on the CSI collected from stationary locations through extensive experimental tests and computer simulations.

Abstract
The main goal of an Indoor Positioning System (IPS) is to estimate the position of mobile devices in indoor environments. For this purpose, the primary source of information is the signal strength of packets received by a set of routers. The fingerprint technique is one of the most used techniques for IPSs. By using supervised machine learning techniques, it trains a model with the received signal intensity information so it can be used to estimate the positions of the devices later in an online phase. Although the k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) is one of the most widely used classification methods due to its accuracy, it has no scalability since a sample that needs to be classified must be compared to all other samples in the training database. In this work, we use a novel hierarchical navigable small world graph technique to build a search structure so the location of a sample can be efficiently found, allowing the IPSs to be used in large-scale scenarios or run on devices with limited resources. To carry out our performance evaluation, we proposed a synthetic IPS dataset generator as well as implemented a complete real-world, large-scale IPS testbed. We compared the performance of our graph-based solution with other known kNN variants, such as Kd-Tree and Ball-Tree. Our results clearly show the performance gains of the proposed solution at 98% when compared to the classic kNN and at least 80% when compared to tree-based approaches.

Abstract
In order to solve the problem of pedestrian positioning in the indoor environment, this paper proposes a high-precision indoor pedestrian positioning system (HPIPS) based on smart phones. First of all, in view of the non-line-of-sight and multipath problems faced by the radio-signal-based indoor positioning technology, a method of using deep convolutional neural networks to learn the nonlinear mapping relationship between indoor spatial position and Wi-Fi RTT (round-trip time) ranging information is proposed. When constructing the training dataset, a fingerprint grayscale image construction method combined with specific AP (Access Point) positions was designed, and the representative physical space features were extracted by multi-layer convolution for pedestrian position prediction. The proposed positioning model has higher positioning accuracy than traditional fingerprint-matching positioning algorithms. Then, aiming at the problem of large fluctuations and poor continuity of fingerprint positioning results, a particle filter algorithm with an adaptive update of state parameters is proposed. The algorithm effectively integrates microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor information in the smart phone and the structured spatial environment information, improves the freedom and positioning accuracy of pedestrian positioning, and achieves sub-meter-level stable absolute pedestrian positioning. Finally, in a test environment of about 800 m2, through a large number of experiments, compared with the millimeter-level precision optical dynamic calibration system, 94.2% of the positioning error is better than 1 m, and the average positioning error is 0.41 m. The results show that the system can provide high-precision and high-reliability location services and has great application and promotion value.

Abstract
Wide expansion of smartphones triggered a rapid demand for precise localization that can meet the requirements of location-based services. Although the global positioning system is widely used for outdoor positioning, it cannot provide the same accuracy for the indoor. As a result, many alternative indoor positioning technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and geomagnetic field localization have been investigated during the last few years. Today smartphones possess a rich variety of embedded sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer that can facilitate estimating the current location of the user. Traditional geomagnetic field-based fingerprint localization, although it shows promising results, it is limited by the fact that various smartphones have embedded magnetic sensors from different manufacturers and the magnetic field strength that is measured from these smartphones vary significantly. Consequently, the localization performance from various smartphones is different even when the same localization approach is used. So devising an approach that can provide similar performance with various smartphones is a big challenge. Contrary to previous works that build the fingerprint database from the geomagnetic field data of a single smartphone, this study proposes using the geomagnetic field data collected from multiple smartphones to make the geomagnetic field pattern (MP) database. Many experiments are carried out to analyze the performance of the proposed approach with various smartphones. Additionally, a lightweight threshold technique is proposed that can detect user motion using the acceleration data. Results demonstrate that the localization performance for four different smartphones is almost identical when tested with the database made using the magnetic field data from multiple smartphones than that of which considers the magnetic field data from only one smartphone. Moreover, the performance comparison with previous research indicates that the overall performance of smartphones is improved.

Abstract
An accurate and reliable Indoor Positioning System (IPS) applicable to most indoor scenarios has been sought for many years. The number of technologies, techniques, and approaches in general used in IPS proposals is remarkable. Such diversity, coupled with the lack of strict and verifiable evaluations, leads to difficulties for appreciating the true value of most proposals. This paper provides a meta-review that performed a comprehensive compilation of 62 survey papers in the area of indoor positioning. The paper provides the reader with an introduction to IPS and the different technologies, techniques, and some methods commonly employed. The introduction is supported by consensus found in the selected surveys and referenced using them. Thus, the meta-review allows the reader to inspect the IPS current state at a glance and serve as a guide for the reader to easily find further details on each technology used in IPS. The analyses of the meta-review contributed with insights on the abundance and academic significance of published IPS proposals using the criterion of the number of citations. Moreover, 75 works are identified as relevant works in the research topic from a selection of about 4000 works cited in the analyzed surveys.

Abstract
Floor identification plays a key role in multi-story indoor positioning and localization systems. Current floor identification systems rely primarily on Wi-Fi signals and barometric pressure data. Barometric systems require installation of additional standalone sensors to perform floor identification. Wi-Fi systems, on the other hand, are vulnerable to the dynamic environment and adverse effects of path loss, shadowing, and multipath fading. In this paper, we take advantage of a pervasive magnetic field to compensate for the limitations of these systems. We employ smartphone sensors to make the proposed scheme infrastructure free and cost-effective. We use smartphone magnetic sensors to identify the floors in a multi-story building with improved accuracy. Floor identification is performed with user activities of normal walking, call listening, and phone swinging. Various machine learning techniques are leveraged to identify user activities. Extensive experiments are performed to evaluate the proposed magnetic-data-based floor identification scheme. Additionally, the impact of device heterogeneity on floor identification is investigated using Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6, and LG G7 smartphones. Research results demonstrate that the magnetic floor identification outperforms barometric and Wi-Fi-enabled floor detection techniques. A floor change module is incorporated to further enhance the accuracy of floor identification.

Abstract
Wi-Fi has shown enormous potential for indoor localization because of its wide utilization and availability. Enabling the use of Wi-Fi for indoor localization necessitates the construction of a fingerprint and the adoption of a learning algorithm. The goal is to enable the use of the fingerprint in training the classifiers for predicting locations. Existing models of machine learning Wi-Fi-based localization are brought from machine learning and modified to accommodate for practical aspects that occur in indoor localization. The performance of these models varies depending on their effectiveness in handling and/or considering specific characteristics and the nature of indoor localization behavior. One common behavior in the indoor navigation of people is its cyclic dynamic nature. To the best of our knowledge, no existing machine learning model for Wi-Fi indoor localization exploits cyclic dynamic behavior for improving localization prediction. This study modifies the widely popular online sequential extreme learning machine (OSELM) to exploit cyclic dynamic behavior for achieving improved localization results. Our new model is called knowledge preserving OSELM (KP-OSELM). Experimental results conducted on the two popular datasets TampereU and UJIndoorLoc conclude that KP-OSELM outperforms benchmark models in terms of accuracy and stability. The last achieved accuracy was 92.74% for TampereU and 72.99% for UJIndoorLoc.

Abstract
Wi-Fi positioning based on fingerprinting has been considered as the most widely used technology in the field of indoor positioning. The fingerprinting database has been used as an essential part of the Wi-Fi positioning system. However, the offline phase of the calibration involves a laborious task of site analysis which involves costs and a waste of time. We offer an indoor positioning system based on the automatic generation of radio maps of the indoor environment. The proposed system does not require any effort and uses Wi-Fi compatible Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors. Propagation loss parameters are automatically estimated from the online feedback of deployed sensors and the radio maps are updated periodically without any physical intervention. The proposed system leverages the raster maps of an environment with the wall information only, against computationally extensive techniques based on vector maps that require precise information on the length and angles of each wall. Experimental results show that the proposed system has achieved an average accuracy of 2 m, which is comparable to the survey-based Wi-Fi fingerprinting technique.

Abstract
A wide range of localization techniques has been proposed recently that leverage smartphone sensors. Context awareness serves as the backbone of these localization techniques, which helps them to shift the localization technologies to improve efficiency and energy utilization. Indoor-outdoor (IO) context sensing plays a vital role for such systems, which serve both indoor and outdoor localization. IO systems work with collaborative technologies including the Global Positioning System (GPS), cellular tower signals, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a variety of smartphone sensors. GPS- and Wi-Fi-based systems are power hungry, and their accuracy is severed by limiting factors like multipath, shadowing, etc. On the other hand, various built-in smartphone sensors can be deployed for environmental sensing. Although these sensors can play a crucial role, yet they are very less studied. This research aims at investigating the use of ambient magnetic field data alone from a smartphone for IO detection. The research first investigates the feasibility of utilizing magnetic field data alone for IO detection and then extracts different features suitable for IO detection to be used in machine learning-based classifiers to discriminate between indoor and outdoor environments. The experiments are performed at three different places including a subway station, a shopping mall and Yeungnam University (YU), Korea. The training data are collected from one spot of the campus, and testing is performed with data from various locations of the above-mentioned places. The experiment involves Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy Round smartphones. The results show that the magnetic data from smartphone magnetic sensor embody enough information and can discriminate the indoor environment from the outdoor environment. Naive Bayes (NB) outperforms with a classification accuracy of 83.26%, as against Support vector machines (SVM), random induction (RI), gradient boosting machines (GBM), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor (kNN) and decision trees (DT), whose accuracies are 67.21%, 73.38%, 73.40%, 78.59%, 69.53% and 68.60%, respectively. kNN, SVM and DT do not perform well when noisy data are used for classification. Additionally, other dynamic scenarios affect the attitude of magnetic data and degrade the performance of SVM, RI and GBM. NB and RF prove to be more noise tolerant and environment adaptable and perform very well in dynamic scenarios. Keeping in view the performance of these classifiers, an ensemble-based stacking scheme is presented, which utilizes DT and RI as the base learners and naive Bayes as the ensemble classifier. This approach is able to achieve an accuracy of 85.30% using the magnetic data of the smartphone magnetic sensor. Moreover, with an increase in training data, the accuracy of the stacking scheme can be elevated by 0.83%. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with GPS-, Wi-Fi- and light sensor-based IO detection.

Abstract
An indoor localization system based on off-the-shelf smartphone sensors is presented which employs the magnetometer to find user location. Further assisted by the accelerometer and gyroscope, the proposed system is able to locate the user without any prior knowledge of user initial position. The system exploits the fingerprint database approach for localization. Traditional fingerprinting technology stores data intensity values in database such as RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) values in the case of WiFi fingerprinting and magnetic flux intensity values in the case of geomagnetic fingerprinting. The down side is the need to update the database periodically and device heterogeneity. We solve this problem by using the fingerprint database of patterns formed by magnetic flux intensity values. The pattern matching approach solves the problem of device heterogeneity and the algorithm's performance with Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6 is comparable. A deep learning based artificial neural network is adopted to identify the user state of walking and stationary and its accuracy is 95%. The localization is totally infrastructure independent and does not require any other technology to constraint the search space. The experiments are performed to determine the accuracy in three buildings of Yeungnam University, Republic of Korea with different path lengths and path geometry. The results demonstrate that the error is 2⁻3 m for 50 percentile with various buildings. Even though many locations in the same building exhibit very similar magnetic attitude, the algorithm achieves an accuracy of 4 m for 75 percentile irrespective of the device used for localization.

Abstract
The Global Positioning System demonstrates the significance of Location Based Services but it cannot be used indoors due to the lack of line of sight between satellites and receivers. Indoor Positioning Systems are needed to provide indoor Location Based Services. Wireless LAN fingerprints are one of the best choices for Indoor Positioning Systems because of their low cost, and high accuracy, however they have many drawbacks: creating radio maps is time consuming, the radio maps will become outdated with any environmental change, different mobile devices read the received signal strength (RSS) differently, and peoples’ presence in LOS between access points and mobile device affects the RSS. This research proposes a new Adaptive Indoor Positioning System model (called DIPS) based on: a dynamic radio map generator, RSS certainty technique and peoples’ presence effect integration for dynamic and multi-floor environments. Dynamic in our context refers to the effects of people and device heterogeneity. DIPS can achieve 98% and 92% positioning accuracy for floor and room positioning, and it achieves 1.2 m for point positioning error. RSS certainty enhanced the positioning accuracy for floor and room for different mobile devices by 11% and 9%. Then by considering the peoples’ presence effect, the error is reduced by 0.2 m. In comparison with other works, DIPS achieves better positioning without extra devices.
