A Direct Bicarbonate Detection Method Based on a Near-Concentric Cavity-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy System

Colorimetric and absorbance based sensor for sulfide and bicarbonate ions by dye doped polymer composite

We have developed a simple, rapid and cost-effective Dual-channel "colorimetric and absorbance" sensor using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) capped Rhodamine6g (Rh6G) dye composite. Dye-doped polymer composite probe (PVPRH) exhibit intense, narrow absorption properties and long-term stability than the bare Rh6G. The probe's colorimetric relationship with pH was demonstrated by absorption titration. The PVPRH provides a sensitive dual channel method for the determination of sulfide and bicarbonate with colorimetric response and absorption quenching. The synthesized probe, as a two-faced, exhibited remarkable colorimetric responses from orange to pale yellow in the presence of S2- and orange to soft pink in the presence of HCO3- ion, which can be observed by the naked eye also. Under optimal conditions, the relative absorption intensity decreases with increasing ion concentration of sulfide and bicarbonate ions. This trend is observed within the probe solution concentration range of 5 mM to 50 mM. The Dye-doped polymer composite probe is easy, cost effective, rapid, and has real time detection capability for sulfide and bicarbonate ions. The composite probe is stable and optically modified and can be successfully used for detections of S2- and HCO3- ions as strip senor.

Measurement of CO2 in Water from an Ultraviolet Oxidizer for a Space-Worthy Wastewater Recovery System Using Raman Spectroscopy

NASA has been developing and testing a water recovery system for over two decades to minimize the amount of water required for long duration human space missions. A key system component is the total organic carbon analyzer (TOCA) that determines if the recovered water is below the toxicology-defined health limit of 5 mg/L TOC and is safe to drink. The TOCA is composed of a liquid phase loop and a gas phase loop. The TOCA employs an oxidizer to convert the organics in the liquid phase to carbon dioxide (CO₂) and a liquid-gas separator to isolate the CO₂ for measurement in the gas phase by infrared spectroscopy. In an effort to reduce the consumables, mass, volume, and power of the system, we investigated the ability of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and Raman spectroscopy to measure 5 mg/L carbon in water. The SERS measurement employed silver colloids to increase sensitivity, while the Raman measurements used multiple mirrors to increase sensitivity. Here, we present SERS measurements of carbonate (CO₃=) at 3 mg/L carbon and Raman measurements of CO₂ at 9 mg/L carbon in the effluent water of a new oxidizer being developed for a future TOCA. Both SERS and Raman techniques can determine TOC in the liquid phase, eliminating the need for the gas phase loop and associated supplies and replacement components, which could effectively decrease the size and weight of the current TOCA by as much as 50%.

High-Sensitivity Raman Gas Probe for In Situ Multi-Component Gas Detection

Multiple reflection has been proven to be an effective method to enhance the gas detection sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy, while Raman gas probes based on the multiple reflection principle have been rarely reported on. In this paper, a multi-reflection, cavity enhanced Raman spectroscopy (CERS) probe was developed and used for in situ multi-component gas detection. Owing to signal transmission through optical fibers and the miniaturization of multi-reflection cavity, the CERS probe exhibited the advantages of in situ detection and higher detection sensitivity. Compared with the conventional, backscattering Raman layout, the CERS probe showed a better performance for the detection of weak signals with a relatively lower background. According to the 3σ criteria, the detection limits of this CERS probe for methane, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor are calculated to be 44.5 ppm, 192.9 ppm, 317.5 ppm and 0.67%, respectively. The results presented the development of this CERS probe as having great potential to provide a new method for industrial, multi-component online gas detection.

Development of a compact deep-sea Raman spectroscopy system and direct bicarbonate detection in sea trials

In recent years, Raman spectroscopy techniques have been successfully applied to the area of deep-sea exploration. However, there are still some problems impeding the further application of Raman systems. For example, the large size of an underwater Raman system makes it difficult to deploy on the underwater vehicle. Meanwhile, the sensitivity is often a disadvantage, requiring improvement for detecting more trace components. To solve these problems, a new compact deep-sea in situ Raman spectroscopy system is presented in this paper. The whole system weighs 60 kg and is housed in an L800  mm×ϕ258  mm pressure vessel with an optical window on the front end cap. The main components include a 532 nm Nd:YAG laser, an optics module, a high-throughput spectrograph with 0∼4900  cm^-1 spectral range and 8  cm^-1 spectral resolution, a TEC-cooled 2000  pixel×256  pixel CCD detector, a PC104 embedded computer, and an electronics module. To evaluate the performance of the newly developed Raman system, systematic experiments have been carried out with solutions in laboratory, and the results have shown that the system limit of detection of SO42- is 0.4 mmol/L. The Raman system has been successfully deployed on a remote-operated vehicle on the Kexue research vessel in June 2015. The typical in situ detection results are presented in this paper, and it is shown that the Raman system is capable of detecting the Raman signal of SO42- and fluorescence of chlorophyll a (chl-a) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in seawater. With 500 spectra accumulations and some data processing, the Raman signal of HCO3- is obtained. This is the first report of direct measurement of HCO3- by Raman system in in situ experiments. After further optimization, it is hoped to apply the Raman system in seafloor observation networks for long-time carbon cycling research.

Feasibility Study of Real-Time Monitoring of Pin Connection Wear Using Acoustic Emission

Pin connections are one of the most important connecting forms and they have been widely used in engineering fields. In its service, pin connections are subject to wear, and it will be beneficial if the health condition of pin connections can be monitored in real time. In this paper, an acoustic emission (AE)-based method was developed to monitor wear degree of low rotational speed pin connections in real time in a nondestructive way. Most pin connections are operated at low rotational speed. To facilitate the research, an experimental apparatus to accelerate the wear test of low rotational speed pin connections was designed and fabricated. The piezoceramic AE sensor was mounted on the test apparatus in a nondestructive way, and it was capable of real-time monitoring. Accelerated wear tests of low rotational speed pin connections were conducted. To verify the results of the AE technique, a VHX-600E digital (from Keyence, Osaka, Japan) microscope was applied to observe the micrographs of the tested pins. The experimental results show that AE activity existed throughout the entire wear process, and it was the most prominent in the serious wear phase. The wear degree of the pin connections can be reflected qualitatively by the signal strength and the accumulative signal strength of the AE signals. In addition, two different wear forms can be distinguished by comparing the signal strength values of all specimens. Micrographs of all specimens confirm these results, and determine that the two wear forms include adhesive wear and abrasive wear. Furthermore, AE results demonstrated that adhesive wear is the main mode of wear for the low rotational speed pin connections, and the signal strength of the adhesive wear is around 190 times larger than that of abrasive wear. This feasibility study demonstrated that the developed acoustic emission technique can be utilized in the wear monitoring of pin connections in real time in a nondestructive way.
