The Effect of Electrical Impedance Matching on the Electromechanical Characteristics of Sandwiched Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Transducers

GHz ultrasonic sensor for ionic content with high sensitivity and localization

Sensing the ionic content of a solution at high spatial and temporal resolution and sensitivity is a challenge in nanosensing. This paper describes a comprehensive investigation of the possibility of GHz ultrasound acoustic impedance sensors to sense the content of an ionic aqueous medium. At the 1.55 GHz ultrasonic frequency used in this study, the micron-scale wavelength and the decay lengths in liquid result in a highly localized sense volume with the added potential for high temporal resolution and sensitivity. The amplitude of the back reflected pulse is related to the acoustic impedance of the medium and a function of ionic species concentration of the KCl, NaCl, and CaCl₂ solutions used in this study. A concentration sensitivity as high as 1 mM and concentration detection range of 0 to 3 M was achieved. These bulk acoustic wave pulse-echo acoustic impedance sensors can also be used to record dynamic ionic flux.

Review of the design of power ultrasonic generator for piezoelectric transducer

The power ultrasonic generator (PUG) is the core device of power ultrasonic technology (PUT), and its performance determines the application of this technology in biomedicine, semiconductor, aerospace, and other fields. With the high demand for sensitive and accurate dynamic response in power ultrasonic applications, the design of PUG has become a hot topic in academic and industry. However, the previous reviews cannot be used as a universal technical manual for industrial applications. There are many technical difficulties in establishing a mature production system, which hinder the large-scale application of PUG for piezoelectric transducers. To enhance the performance of the dynamic matching and power control of PUG, the studies in various PUT applications have been reviewed in this article. Initially, the demand design covering the piezoelectric transducer application and parameter requirements for ultrasonic and electrical signals is overall summarized, and these parameter requirements have been recommended as the technical indicators of developing the new PUG. Then the factors affecting the power conversion circuit design are analyzed systematically to realize the foundational performance improvement of PUG. Furthermore, advantages and limitations of key control technologies have been summarized to provide some different ideas on how to realize automatic resonance tracking and adaptive power adjustment, and to optimize the power control and dynamic matching control. Finally, several research directions of PUG in the future have been prospected.

A Simple Approach to Connecting Pt100 by Utilizing an Electroacoustic Resonance Tube

Temperature transducers are frequently employed to keep track of process variables with different kinds of industrial controllers. One of the widely used temperature sensors is Pt100. A novel approach of utilizing an electroacoustic transducer in signal conditioning for Pt100 is proposed in this paper. A "signal conditioner" is a resonance tube filled with air, which is operated in a free resonance mode. The Pt100 wires are connected to one of the leads of the speaker in the resonance tube where the temperature changes, which is related to Pt100 resistance. The resistance affects the amplitude of the standing wave that is detected by an electrolyte microphone. An algorithm for measuring the amplitude of the speaker signal is described, as well as the building and functioning of the electroacoustic resonance tube signal conditioner. The microphone signal is acquired as a voltage using LabVIEW software. A virtual instrument (VI) developed under LabVIEW provides a measure of the voltage using standard VIs. The findings of the experiments reveal a link between the measured amplitude of the standing wave within the tube and the change in Pt100 resistance as the ambient temperature changes. Additionally, the suggested method may interface with any computer system when a sound card is added to it without the need for any extra measuring tools. The maximum nonlinearity error at full-scale deflection (FSD) is estimated at roughly 3.77%, and the experimental results and a regression model are used to assess the relative inaccuracy of the developed signal conditioner. When comparing the proposed approach with well-known approaches for Pt100 signal conditioning, the proposed one has several advantages such as its simplicity of connecting Pt100 to a personal computer directly via the sound card of any personal computer. In addition, there is no need for a reference resistance to perform a temperature measurement using such a signal conditioner.

Analytical and Experimental Investigation of a Curved Piezoelectric Energy Harvester

Piezoelectric energy harvesters have traditionally taken the form of base excited cantilevers. However, there is a growing body of research into the use of curved piezoelectric transducers for energy harvesting. The novel contribution of this paper is an analytical model of a piezoelectric energy harvesting curved beam based on the dynamic stiffness method (DSM) and its application to predict the measured output of a novel design of energy harvester that uses commercial curved transducers (THUNDER TH-7R). The DSM predictions are also verified against results from commercial finite element (FE) software. The validated results illustrate the resonance shift and shunt damping arising from the electrical effect. The magnitude, phase, Nyquist plots, and resonance frequency shift estimates from DSM and FE are all in satisfactory agreement. However, DSM has the advantage of having significantly fewer elements and is sufficiently accurate for commercial curved transducers used in applications where beam-like vibration is the predominant mode of vibration.

Theoretical and Empirical Verification of Electrical Impedance Matching Method for High-Power Transducers

In our prior study, a systematic approach was used to devise Langevin transducers for high-power applications where the energy efficiency was not considered in the design criteria. In this paper, the impedance matching methods are thus proposed to evaluate what matching topology is appropriate for their use. Both the series inductor scheme and low pass filter composed of a series inductor and shunt capacitor are examined as matching circuits. According to MATLAB simulation, the resonance frequency is seen at 36.79 kHz due to a series L circuit, and its associated impedance is reduced by 70.45% from that of its non-matching condition. The measured resonance frequency is 36.77 kHz and the corresponding impedance is decreased by 59.52%. Furthermore, the acoustic pressure is measured to determine the effect of the matching circuit on the transducer’s actual behavior. The transducer with a series L circuit shows more efficient matching results, 2.28 kPa of positive acoustic pressure is emitted without matching and 3.35 kPa is emitted with a series L element, respectively. As a result, this study demonstrates how to evaluate the influence of matching circuits by using our customized approach rather than commercial SPICE programs, as well as how to experimentally verify the acoustic behavior of high-power Langevin transducers.

Piezoelectric MEMS Acoustic Transducer with Electrically-Tunable Resonant Frequency

The paper presents a technique to obtain an electrically-tunable matching between the series and parallel resonant frequencies of a piezoelectric MEMS acoustic transducer to increase the effectiveness of acoustic emission/detection in voltage-mode driving and sensing. The piezoelectric MEMS transducer has been fabricated using the PiezoMUMPs technology, and it operates in a plate flexural mode exploiting a 6 mm × 6 mm doped silicon diaphragm with an aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric layer deposited on top. The piezoelectric layer can be actuated by means of electrodes placed at the edges of the diaphragm above the AlN film. By applying an adjustable bias voltage V_b between two properly-connected electrodes and the doped silicon, the d31 mode in the AlN film has been exploited to electrically induce a planar static compressive or tensile stress in the diaphragm, depending on the sign of V_b, thus shifting its resonant frequency. The working principle has been first validated through an eigenfrequency analysis with an electrically induced prestress by means of 3D finite element modelling in COMSOL Multiphysics^®. The first flexural mode of the unstressed diaphragm results at around 5.1 kHz. Then, the piezoelectric MEMS transducer has been experimentally tested in both receiver and transmitter modes. Experimental results have shown that the resonance can be electrically tuned in the range V_b = ±8 V with estimated tuning sensitivities of 8.7 ± 0.5 Hz/V and 7.8 ± 0.9 Hz/V in transmitter and receiver modes, respectively. A matching of the series and parallel resonant frequencies has been experimentally demonstrated in voltage-mode driving and sensing by applying V_b = 0 in transmission and V_b = −1.9 V in receiving, respectively, thereby obtaining the optimal acoustic emission and detection effectiveness at the same operating frequency.

Overview of Ultrasound Detection Technologies for Photoacoustic Imaging

Ultrasound detection is one of the major components of photoacoustic imaging systems. Advancement in ultrasound transducer technology has a significant impact on the translation of photoacoustic imaging to the clinic. Here, we present an overview on various ultrasound transducer technologies including conventional piezoelectric and micromachined transducers, as well as optical ultrasound detection technology. We explain the core components of each technology, their working principle, and describe their manufacturing process. We then quantitatively compare their performance when they are used in the receive mode of a photoacoustic imaging system.

A Simplified Analysis Method for the Piezo Jet Dispenser with a Diamond Amplifier

Diamond amplifiers have been widely applied in Nano actuators and Robots. In order to study the dynamic characteristics of the diamond amplifier system which is used in the piezo jet dispenser, it is simplified as a spring-mass-damper system. The dynamic characteristics of the jet dispenser system are analyzed with the simplified method. The characteristics are also tested. The results agree with the simulation, which proves the method is feasible. It will provide a simplified and intuitive representation of the movement of the amplifier, and also provide reliable simulation and experimental platforms for jet dispensing analysis.
