Inertial Motion Capture-Based Wearable Systems for Estimation of Joint Kinetics: A Systematic Review

In biomechanics, joint kinetics has an important role in evaluating the mechanical load of the joint and understanding its motor function. Although an optical motion capture (OMC) system has mainly been used to evaluate joint kinetics in combination with force plates, inertial motion capture (IMC) systems have recently been emerging in joint kinetic analysis due to their wearability and ubiquitous measurement capability. In this regard, numerous studies have been conducted to estimate joint kinetics using IMC-based wearable systems. However, these have not been comprehensively addressed yet. Thus, the aim of this review is to explore the methodology of the current studies on estimating joint kinetic variables by means of an IMC system. From a systematic search of the literature, 48 studies were selected. This paper summarizes the content of the selected literature in terms of the (i) study characteristics, (ii) methodologies, and (iii) study results. The estimation methods of the selected studies are categorized into two types: the inverse dynamics-based method and the machine learning-based method. While these two methods presented different characteristics in estimating the kinetic variables, it was demonstrated in the literature that both methods could be applied with good performance for the kinetic analysis of joints in different daily activities.

Wearable IMMU-Based Relative Position Estimation between Body Segments via Time-Varying Segment-to-Joint Vectors

In biomechanics, estimating the relative position between two body segments using inertial and magnetic measurement units (IMMUs) is important in that it enables the capture of human motion in unconstrained environments. The relative position can be estimated using the segment orientation and segment-to-joint center (S2J) vectors where the S2J vectors are predetermined as constants under the assumption of rigid body segments. However, human body segments are not rigid bodies because they are easily affected by soft tissue artifacts (STAs). Therefore, the use of the constant S2J vectors is one of the most critical factors for the inaccurate estimation of relative position. To deal with this issue, this paper proposes a method of determining time-varying S2J vectors to reflect the deformation of the S2J vectors and thus to increase the estimation accuracy, in IMMU-based relative position estimation. For the proposed method, first, reference S2J vectors for learning needed to be collected. A regression method derived a function outputting S2J vectors based on specific physical quantities that were highly correlated with the deformation of S2J vectors. Subsequently, time-varying S2J vectors were determined from the derived function. The validation results showed that, in terms of the averaged root mean squared errors of four tests performed by three subjects, the proposed method (15.08 mm) provided a higher estimation accuracy than the conventional method using constant vectors (31.32 mm). This indicates the proposed method may effectively compensate for the effects of STAs and ultimately estimate more accurate relative positions. By providing STA-compensated relative positions between segments, the proposed method applied in a wearable motion tracking system can be useful in rehabilitation or sports sciences.

Inertial-Based Human Motion Capture: A Technical Summary of Current Processing Methodologies for Spatiotemporal and Kinematic Measures

Inertial-based motion capture (IMC) has been suggested to overcome many of the limitations of traditional motion capture systems. The validity of IMC is, however, suggested to be dependent on the methodologies used to process the raw data collected by the inertial device. The aim of this technical summary is to provide researchers and developers with a starting point from which to further develop the current IMC data processing methodologies used to estimate human spatiotemporal and kinematic measures. The main workflow pertaining to the estimation of spatiotemporal and kinematic measures was presented, and a general overview of previous methodologies used for each stage of data processing was provided. For the estimation of spatiotemporal measures, which includes stride length, stride rate, and stance/swing duration, measurement thresholding and zero-velocity update approaches were discussed as the most common methodologies used to estimate such measures. The methodologies used for the estimation of joint kinematics were found to be broad, with the combination of Kalman filtering or complimentary filtering and various sensor to segment alignment techniques including anatomical alignment, static calibration, and functional calibration methods identified as being most common. The effect of soft tissue artefacts, device placement, biomechanical modelling methods, and ferromagnetic interference within the environment, on the accuracy and validity of IMC, was also discussed. Where a range of methods have previously been used to estimate human spatiotemporal and kinematic measures, further development is required to reduce estimation errors, improve the validity of spatiotemporal and kinematic estimations, and standardize data processing practices. It is anticipated that this technical summary will reduce the time researchers and developers require to establish the fundamental methodological components of IMC prior to commencing further development of IMC methodologies, thus increasing the rate of development and utilisation of IMC.

Inertial Sensor-Based Lower Limb Joint Kinematics: A Methodological Systematic Review

The use of inertial measurement units (IMUs) has gained popularity for the estimation of lower limb kinematics. However, implementations in clinical practice are still lacking. The aim of this review is twofold—to evaluate the methodological requirements for IMU-based joint kinematic estimation to be applicable in a clinical setting, and to suggest future research directions. Studies within the PubMed, Web Of Science and EMBASE databases were screened for eligibility, based on the following inclusion criteria: (1) studies must include a methodological description of how kinematic variables were obtained for the lower limb, (2) kinematic data must have been acquired by means of IMUs, (3) studies must have validated the implemented method against a golden standard reference system. Information on study characteristics, signal processing characteristics and study results was assessed and discussed. This review shows that methods for lower limb joint kinematics are inherently application dependent. Sensor restrictions are generally compensated with biomechanically inspired assumptions and prior information. Awareness of the possible adaptations in the IMU-based kinematic estimates by incorporating such prior information and assumptions is necessary, before drawing clinical decisions. Future research should focus on alternative validation methods, subject-specific IMU-based biomechanical joint models and disturbed movement patterns in real-world settings.

Joint Center Estimation Using Single-Frame Optimization: Part 2: Experimentation

Human motion capture is driven by joint center location estimates, and error in their estimation can be compounded by subsequent kinematic calculations. Soft tissue artifact (STA), the motion of tissue relative to the underlying bones, is a primary cause of error in joint center calculations. A method for mitigating the effects of STA, single-frame optimization (SFO), was introduced and numerically verified in Part 1 of this work, and the purpose of this article (Part 2) is to experimentally compare the results of SFO with a marker-based solution. The experimentation herein employed a single-degree-of-freedom pendulum to simulate human joint motion, and the effects of STA were simulated by affixing the inertial measurement unit to the pendulum indirectly through raw, vacuum-sealed meat. The inertial sensor was outfitted with an optical marker adapter so that its location could be optically determined by a camera-based motion-capture system. During the motion, inertial effects and non-rigid attachment of the inertial sensor caused the simulated STA to manifest via unrestricted motion (six degrees of freedom) relative to the rigid pendulum. The redundant inertial and optical instrumentation allowed a time-varying joint center solution to be determined both by optical markers and by SFO, allowing for comparison. The experimental results suggest that SFO can achieve accuracy comparable to that of state-of-the-art joint center determination methods that use optical skin markers (root mean square error of 7.87–37.86 mm), and that the time variances of the SFO solutions are correlated (r =  0.58–0.99) with the true, time-varying joint center solutions. This suggests that SFO could potentially help to fill a gap in the existing literature by improving the characterization and mitigation of STA in human motion capture.
