An Intelligent Actuator of an Indoor Logistics System Based on Multi-Sensor Fusion

Integration technologies of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous vehicles play important roles in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In order to achieve better logistics distribution efficiency, this paper proposes an intelligent actuator of an indoor logistics system by fusing multiple involved sensors. Firstly, an actuator based on a four-wheel differential chassis is equipped with sensors, including an RGB camera, a lidar and an indoor inertial navigation system, by which autonomous driving can be realized. Secondly, cross-floor positioning can be realized by multi-node simultaneous localization and mappings (SLAM) based on the Cartographer algorithm Thirdly the actuator can communicate with elevators and take the elevator to the designated delivery floor. Finally, a novel indoor route planning strategy is designed based on an A* algorithm and genetic algorithm (GA) and an actual building is tested as a scenario. The experimental results have shown that the actuator can model the indoor mapping and develop the optimal route effectively. At the same time, the actuator displays its superiority in detecting the dynamic obstacles and actively avoiding the collision in the indoor scenario. Through communicating with indoor elevators, the final delivery task can be completed accurately by autonomous driving.

A Nonlinear Double Model for Multisensor-Integrated Navigation Using the Federated EKF Algorithm for Small UAVs

Aimed at improving upon the disadvantages of the single centralized Kalman filter for integrated navigation, including its fragile robustness and low solution accuracy, a nonlinear double model based on the improved decentralized federated extended Kalman filter (EKF) for integrated navigation is proposed. The multisensor error model is established and simplified in this paper according to the near-ground short distance navigation applications of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In order to overcome the centralized Kalman filter that is used in the linear Gaussian system, the improved federated EKF is designed for multisensor-integrated navigation. Subsequently, because of the navigation requirements of UAVs, especially for the attitude solution accuracy, this paper presents a nonlinear double model that consists of the nonlinear attitude heading reference system (AHRS) model and nonlinear strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS)/GPS-integrated navigation model. Moreover, the common state parameters of the nonlinear double model are optimized by the federated filter to obtain a better attitude. The proposed algorithm is compared with multisensor complementary filtering (MSCF) and multisensor EKF (MSEKF) using collected flight sensors data. The simulation and experimental tests demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has a good robustness and state estimation solution accuracy.

A Revisiting Method Using a Covariance Traveling Salesman Problem Algorithm for Landmark-Based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

This paper presents an efficient revisiting algorithm for landmark-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). To reduce SLAM uncertainty in terms of a robot’s pose and landmark positions, the method autonomously evaluates valuable landmarks for the data associations in the SLAM algorithm and selects positions to revisit by considering both landmark visibility and sensor measurement uncertainty. The optimal path among the selected positions is obtained by applying the traveling salesman problem (TSP) algorithm. To plan a path that reduces overall uncertainty, the cost matrix associated with the change in covariance between all selected positions of all pairs is applied for the TSP algorithm. From simulations, it is verified that the proposed method efficiently reduces and maintains SLAM uncertainty at the low level compared to the backtracking method.

Traversability Assessment and Trajectory Planning of Unmanned Ground Vehicles with Suspension Systems on Rough Terrain

This paper presents a traversability assessment method and a trajectory planning method. They are key features for the navigation of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) in a non-planar environment. In this work, a 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor is used to obtain the geometric information about a rough terrain surface. For a given SE(2) pose of the vehicle and a specific vehicle model, the SE(3) pose of the vehicle is estimated based on LiDAR points, and then a traversability is computed. The traversability tells the vehicle the effects of its interaction with the rough terrain. Note that the traversability is computed on demand during trajectory planning, so there is not any explicit terrain discretization. The proposed trajectory planner finds an initial path through the non-holonomic A*, which is a modified form of the conventional A* planner. A path is a sequence of poses without timestamps. Then, the initial path is optimized in terms of the traversability, using the method of Lagrange multipliers. The optimization accounts for the model of the vehicle's suspension system. Therefore, the optimized trajectory is dynamically feasible, and the trajectory tracking error is small. The proposed methods were tested in both the simulation and the real-world experiments. The simulation experiments were conducted in a simulator called Gazebo, which uses a physics engine to compute the vehicle motion. The experiments were conducted in various non-planar experiments. The results indicate that the proposed methods could accurately estimate the SE(3) pose of the vehicle. Besides, the trajectory cost of the proposed planner was lower than the trajectory costs of other state-of-the-art trajectory planners.

An Offline Coarse-To-Fine Precision Optimization Algorithm for 3D Laser SLAM Point Cloud

3D laser simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology is one of the most efficient methods to capture spatial information. However, the low-precision of 3D laser SLAM point cloud limits its application in many fields. In order to improve the precision of 3D laser SLAM point cloud, we presented an offline coarse-to-fine precision optimization algorithm. The point clouds are first segmented and registered at the local level. Then, a pose graph of point cloud segments is constructed using feature similarity and global registration. At last, all segments are aligned and merged into the final optimized result. In addition, a cycle based error edge elimination method is utilized to guarantee the consistency of the pose graph. The experimental results demonstrated that our algorithm achieved good performance both in our test datasets and the Cartographer public dataset. Compared with the reference data obtained by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), the average point-to-point distance root mean square errors (RMSE) of point clouds generated by Google’s Cartographer and LOAM laser SLAM algorithms are reduced by 47.3% and 53.4% respectively after optimization in our datasets. And the average plane-to-plane distances of them are reduced by 50.9% and 52.1% respectively.
