Trend Technologies for Robotic Fertilization Process in Row Crops

The development of new sensory and robotic technologies in recent years and the increase in the consumption of organic vegetables have allowed the generation of specific applications around precision agriculture seeking to satisfy market demand. This article analyzes the use and advantages of specific optical sensory systems for data acquisition and processing in precision agriculture for Robotic Fertilization process. The SUREVEG project evaluates the benefits of growing vegetables in rows, using different technological tools like sensors, embedded systems, and robots, for this purpose. A robotic platform has been developed consisting of Laser Sick AG LMS100 × 3, Multispectral, RGB sensors, and a robotic arm equipped with a fertilization system. Tests have been developed with the robotic platform in cabbage and red cabbage crops, information captured with the different sensors, allowed to reconstruct rows crops and extract information for fertilization with the robotic arm. The main advantages of each sensory have been analyzed with an quantitative comparison, based on information provided by each one; such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index index, RGB Histograms, Point Cloud Clusters). Robot Operating System processes this information to generate trajectory planning with the robotic arm and apply the individual treatment in plants. Main results show that the vegetable characterization has been carried out with an efficiency of 93.1% using Point Cloud processing, while the vegetable detection has obtained an error of 4.6% through RGB images.

Utilizing spectral vegetation indices for yield assessment of tomato genotypes grown in arid conditions

Tomato is among important vegetable crops cultivated in different climates; however, heat stress can greatly affect fruit quality and overall yield. Crop reflectance measurements based on ground reflectance sensor data are reliable indicators of crop tolerance to abiotic stresses. Here, we report on using non-destructive spectral vegetation indices to monitor yield traits of 10 tomato genotypes transplanted on three different dates (Aug. 2, Sept. 3 and Oct. 1) during 2019 growing season in the Riyadh region. The ten genotypes comprised six commercial cultivars–(Pearson Improved, Strain B, Valentine, Marmande VF, Super Strain B, and Pearson early) ––and four local Saudi cultivars (Al-Ahsa, Al-Qatif, Hail and Najran). Spectral reflectance data were utilized using a FieldSpec 3 spectroradiometer in the range of 350–2500 nm to calculate nine vegetation indices (VIs): Normalized Water Band Index (NWBI), Difference Water Index (NDWI), Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Red Edge Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Red Edge Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (RENDVI), Renormalized Difference Vegetation Index (RDVI), and Normalized Difference Nitrogen Index (NDNI). VIs and yield parameters (total fruit yield, harvest index) revealed that second transplanting date was optimal for all the genotypes. Valentine showed the best growth performance followed by Najran, Hail, Super Strain B and finally Pearson early. For all the three transplanting dates, Valentine recorded the highest total fruit yield. Additionally, some genotypes had no significant differences in the VIs values or the total fruit yield between the second and third transplanting dates. This study indicated that yield parameters could be linked to rapid, non-destructive hyperspectral reflectance data to predict tomato production under heat stress.

UAV Patrolling for Wildfire Monitoring by a Dynamic Voronoi Tessellation on Satellite Data

Fire monitoring and early detection are critical tasks in which Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are commonly employed. This paper presents a system to plan the drone patrolling schedule according to a real-time estimation of a fire propagation index that is derived from satellite data, such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) measurement and the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the surveilled area. The proposed system employs a waypoint scheduling logic, derived from a dynamic Voronoi Tessellation of the area, that combines characteristics of the territory (e.g., vegetation density) with real-time measurements (e.g., wind speed and direction). The system is validated on a case study in Italy, in the municipality of the city of L’Aquila, on three different fire scenarios. In normal situations, the designed waypoint-based navigation system provided an effective monitoring of the area, enabling the early detection of starting fires. The developed solution also demonstrated good performance in tracking and anticipating the fire front advance, potentially providing a better situational awareness to emergency operators and support their response policies. Both the test environment and the simulator have been made open-source.

Proximal Methods for Plant Stress Detection Using Optical Sensors and Machine Learning

Plant stresses have been monitored using the imaging or spectrometry of plant leaves in the visible (red-green-blue or RGB), near-infrared (NIR), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet (UV) wavebands, often augmented by fluorescence imaging or fluorescence spectrometry. Imaging at multiple specific wavelengths (multi-spectral imaging) or across a wide range of wavelengths (hyperspectral imaging) can provide exceptional information on plant stress and subsequent diseases. Digital cameras, thermal cameras, and optical filters have become available at a low cost in recent years, while hyperspectral cameras have become increasingly more compact and portable. Furthermore, smartphone cameras have dramatically improved in quality, making them a viable option for rapid, on-site stress detection. Due to these developments in imaging technology, plant stresses can be monitored more easily using handheld and field-deployable methods. Recent advances in machine learning algorithms have allowed for images and spectra to be analyzed and classified in a fully automated and reproducible manner, without the need for complicated image or spectrum analysis methods. This review will highlight recent advances in portable (including smartphone-based) detection methods for biotic and abiotic stresses, discuss data processing and machine learning techniques that can produce results for stress identification and classification, and suggest future directions towards the successful translation of these methods into practical use.
