Effects of stone-made wind shelter structures over an arid nebkha foredune

Beach users often use a range of strategies to shelter from the wind and blown sand. This involves building structures made of stacking stones. Different from other portable wind blockers, stone-made wind shelters can remain in the landscape for a long time. The process of stone removal from their original place and stone-stacking at another location has well-known effects on rock-dwelling wildlife. Less known are the impacts of stone wind shelters on biogeomorphological processes of beach-dune systems, especially those in arid coastlines, where foredunes formed by nebkhas are naturally discontinuous. This is the case of Playa del Inglés beach (Gran Canaria, Spain), the main sediment input to the Maspalomas dunefield, where the presence of stone wind shelters (goros) made by users has increased in recent decades following an increase of visitors. This research aims to investigate the effects of stone wind shelters on the dynamics of an arid beach-dune system at various spatiotemporal scales. The methodology includes the use of aerial photography to study the appearance and evolution of stone shelters in Playa del Inglés and some of their long-term effects on the foredune. Field data was also collected to investigate the effects that stone shelters have over a representative foredune nebkha in detail, by monitoring the changes (topography, airflow, and vegetation) of an individual landform as we progressively remove pebbles from a previously built stone shelter. Results show that stone stacking has an impact on airflow and sediment transport dynamics around landforms, limiting sediment accumulation inside nebkhas and therefore arid foredune growth. Stone stacking also constrict vegetation growth and its ability to retain sediment. The impacts of these artificial structures can be reverted following their removal but that the process of dismantling stones must be carefully planned. We elaborate some recommendations here to do it avoid damaging foredune vegetation.

End-user perspective of low-cost sensors for urban stormwater monitoring: a review

The large-scale deployment of low-cost monitoring systems has the potential to revolutionize the field of urban hydrology monitoring, bringing improved urban management, and a better living environment. Even though low-cost sensors emerged a few decades ago, versatile and cheap electronics like Arduino could give stormwater researchers a new opportunity to build their own monitoring systems to support their work. To find out sensors which are ready for low-cost stormwater monitoring systems, for the first time, we review the performance assessments of low-cost sensors for monitoring air humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, rainfall, water level, water flow, soil moisture, water pH, conductivity, turbidity, nitrogen, and phosphorus in a unified metrological framework considering numerous parameters. In general, as these low-cost sensors are not initially designed for scientific monitoring, there is extra work to make them suitable for in situ monitoring, to calibrate them, to validate their performance, and to connect them with open-source hardware for data transmission. We, therefore, call for international cooperation to develop uniform low-cost sensor production, interface, performance, calibration and system design, installation, and data validation guides which will greatly regulate and facilitate the sharing of experience and knowledge.

Strategies to obtain a better quality of environmental data gathered by low cost systems

Monitoring systems are ubiquitous in many environmental science fields due to the technological advances in the last decades, which contributed to the migration from conventional to automated observing networks. However, the cost of acquisition and operation of sensor networks is still a limiting factor for their wide use. Under this scenario, low-cost and affordable open-source sensors and systems emerge as an alternative to research-grade instruments. To fulfill the quality requirements defined by international organizations, sensor calibration has to be performed and shall be considered as a basic requirement. Best monitoring practices including established quality control procedures should be implemented for gathering environmental data. With a focus on data gathering, this paper reviews basic concepts on open source technologies, calibration methods, quality control procedures, applications and trends, and possibilities for improving the hardware of low-cost and affordable systems.

Characteristic Differences of Wind-Blown Sand Flow Field of Expressway Bridge and Subgrade and Their Implications on Expressway Design

Bridges and subgrades are the main route forms for expressways. The ideal form for passing through sandy areas remains unclear. This study aims to understand the differences in the influence of expressway bridges and subgrades on the near-surface blown sand environment and movement laws, such as the difference in wind speed and profile around the bridge and subgrade, the difference in wind flow-field characteristics, and the difference in sand transport rate, to provide a scientific basis for the selection of expressway route forms in sandy areas. Therefore, a wind tunnel test was carried out by making models of a highway bridge and subgrade and comparing the environmental effects of wind sand on them. The disturbance in the bridge to near-surface blown sand activities was less than that of the subgrade. The variation ranges of the wind speed of the bridge and its upwind and downwind directions were lower than those of the subgrade. However, the required distance to recover the wind speed downwind of the bridge was greater than that of the subgrade, resulting in the sand transport rate of the bridge being lower than that of the subgrade. The variation in the wind field of the subgrade was more drastic than that of the bridge, but the required distance to recover the wind field downwind of the bridge was greater than that of the subgrade. In the wind speed-weakening area upwind, the wind speed-weakening range and intensity of the bridge were smaller than those of the subgrade. In the wind speed-increasing area on the top of the model, the wind speed-increasing range and intensity of the bridge were smaller than those of the subgrade. In the wind-speed-weakening area downwind, the wind speed weakening range of the bridge was greater than that of the subgrade, and the wind speed-weakening intensity was smaller than that of the subgrade. This investigation has theoretical and practical significance for the selection of expressway route forms in sandy areas.

Seed Dispersal Models for Natural Regeneration: A Review and Prospects

Natural regeneration in forest management, which relies on artificial planting, is considered a desirable alternative to reforestation. However, there are large uncertainties regarding the natural regeneration processes, such as seed production, seed dispersal, and seedling establishment. Among these processes, seed dispersal by wind must be modeled accurately to minimize the risks of natural regeneration. This study aimed to (1) review the main mechanisms of seed dispersal models, their characteristics, and their applications and (2) suggest prospects for seed dispersal models to increase the predictability of natural regeneration. With improving computing and observation systems, the modeling technique for seed dispersal by wind has continued to progress steadily from a simple empirical model to the Eulerian-Lagrangian model. Mechanistic modeling approaches with a dispersal kernel have been widely used and have attempted to be directly incorporated into spatial models. Despite the rapid development of various wind-dispersal models, only a few studies have considered their application in natural regeneration. We identified the potential attributes of seed dispersal modeling that cause high uncertainties and poor simulation results in natural regeneration scenarios: topography, pre-processing of wind data, and various inherent complexities in seed dispersal processes. We suggest that seed dispersal models can be further improved by incorporating (1) seed abscission mechanisms by wind, (2) spatiotemporally complex wind environments, (3) collisions with the canopy or ground during seed flight, and (4) secondary dispersal, long-distance dispersal, and seed predation. Interdisciplinary research linking climatology, biophysics, and forestry would help improve the prediction of seed dispersal and its impact on natural regeneration.

Environmental variables affecting an arid coastal nebkha

Foredunes in arid coastal dune systems comprise nebkhas, which originate by interactions between vegetation and aeolian sedimentation. While continuous foredunes in temperate climates have been widely studied, knowledge of interactions between biotic and abiotic drivers in foredunes formed by nebkha is still scarce. With the aim of exploring variables affecting arid foredunes, a range of morphological, sedimentological, and vegetation characteristics were measured on a single nebkha formed by a Traganum moquinii plant located in the foredune of Caleta de Famara beach (Lanzarote, Canary Islands). Variables were sampled at 120 plots in a 0.5 × 0.5 m square grid. A two-step process using multiple linear regression (MLR) analyses was developed to characterize 1) the influence that morphological variables and distance from the sea have on plant and sediment patterns on nebkha, and 2) the influence of plants on depositional sediment characteristics. Results indicate close relationships between distance from the sea, plant coverage, and sediment patterns. Empirical results were used to develop a conceptual model that explains the spatial distribution of bio- and geo-morphological characteristics of an arid nebkha foredune.
