A Microwave Platform for Reliable and Instant Interconnecting Combined with Microwave-Microfluidic Interdigital Capacitor Chips for Sensing Applications

A 4 × 4 Array of Complementary Split-Ring Resonators for Label-Free Dielectric Spectroscopy

In this study, complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) metamaterial structures are proposed for label-free dielectric spectroscopy of liquids in microplates. This novel combination of an array of sensors and microplates is readily scalable and thus offers a great potential for non-invasive, rapid, and label-free dielectric spectroscopy of liquids in large microplate arrays. The proposed array of sensors on a printed circuit board consists of a microstrip line coupled to four CSRRs in cascade with resonant frequencies ranging from 7 to 10 GHz, spaced around 1 GHz. The microwells were manufactured and bonded to the CSRR using polydimethylsiloxane, whose resonant frequency is dependent on a complex relative permittivity of the liquid loaded in the microwell. The individual microstrip lines with CSRRs were interconnected to the measurement equipment using two electronically controllable microwave switches, which enables microwave measurements of the 4 × 4 CSRR array using only a two-port measurement system. The 4 × 4 microwell sensor arrays were calibrated and evaluated using water-ethanol mixtures with different ethanol concentrations. The proposed measurement setup offers comparable results to ones obtained using a dielectric probe, confirming the potential of the planar sensor array for large-scale microplate experiments.

On the Wireless Microwave Sensing of Bacterial Membrane Potential in Microfluidic-Actuated Platforms

The investigation of the electromagnetic properties of biological particles in microfluidic platforms may enable microwave wireless monitoring and interaction with the functional activity of microorganisms. Of high relevance are the action and membrane potentials as they are some of the most important parameters of living cells. In particular, the complex mechanisms of a cell’s action potential are comparable to the dynamics of bacterial membranes, and consequently focusing on the latter provides a simplified framework for advancing the current techniques and knowledge of general bacterial dynamics. In this work, we provide a theoretical analysis and experimental results on the microwave detection of microorganisms within a microfluidic-based platform for sensing the membrane potential of bacteria. The results further advance the state of microwave bacteria sensing and microfluidic control and their implications for measuring and interacting with cells and their membrane potentials, which is of great importance for developing new biotechnologically engineered systems and solutions.

Characterization and Neural Modeling of a Microwave Gas Sensor for Oxygen Detection Aimed at Healthcare Applications

The studied sensor consists of a microstrip interdigital capacitor covered by a gas sensing layer made of titanium dioxide (TiO₂). To explore the gas sensing properties of the developed sensor, oxygen detection is considered as a case study. The sensor is electrically characterized using the complex scattering parameters measured with a vector network analyzer (VNA). The experimental investigation is performed over a frequency range of 1.5 GHz to 2.9 GHz by placing the sensor inside a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) test chamber with a binary gas mixture composed of oxygen and nitrogen. The frequency-dependent response of the sensor is investigated in detail and further modelled using an artificial neural network (ANN) approach. The proposed modelling procedure allows mimicking the measured sensor performance over the whole range of oxygen concentration, going from 0% to 100%, and predicting the behavior of the resonant frequencies that can be used as sensing parameters.
