Abstract
As information acquisition terminals for artificial olfaction, chemiresistive gas sensors are often troubled by their cross-sensitivity, and reducing their cross-response to ambient gases has always been a difficult and important point in the gas sensing area. Pattern recognition based on sensor array is the most conspicuous way to overcome the cross-sensitivity of gas sensors. It is crucial to choose an appropriate pattern recognition method for enhancing data analysis, reducing errors and improving system reliability, obtaining better classification or gas concentration prediction results. In this review, we analyze the sensing mechanism of cross-sensitivity for chemiresistive gas sensors. We further examine the types, working principles, characteristics, and applicable gas detection range of pattern recognition algorithms utilized in gas-sensing arrays. Additionally, we report, summarize, and evaluate the outstanding and novel advancements in pattern recognition methods for gas identification. At the same time, this work showcases the recent advancements in utilizing these methods for gas identification, particularly within three crucial domains: ensuring food safety, monitoring the environment, and aiding in medical diagnosis. In conclusion, this study anticipates future research prospects by considering the existing landscape and challenges. It is hoped that this work will make a positive contribution towards mitigating cross-sensitivity in gas-sensitive devices and offer valuable insights for algorithm selection in gas recognition applications.

Abstract
Authentication of meat floss origin has been highly critical for its consumers due to existing potential risks of having allergic diseases or religion perspective related to pork-containing foods. Herein, we developed and assessed a compact portable electronic nose (e-nose) comprising gas sensor array and supervised machine learning with a window time slicing method to sniff and to classify different meat floss products. We evaluated four different supervised learning methods for data classification (i.e., linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), and random forest (RF)). Among them, an LDA model equipped with five-window-extracted feature yielded the highest accuracy values of >99% for both validation and testing data in discriminating beef, chicken, and pork flosses. The obtained e-nose results were correlated and confirmed with the spectral data from Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) measurements. We found that beef and chicken had similar compound groups (i.e., hydrocarbons and alcohol). Meanwhile, aldehyde compounds (e.g., dodecanal and 9-octadecanal) were found to be dominant in pork products. Based on its performance evaluation, the developed e-nose system shows promising results in food authenticity testing, which paves the way for ubiquitously detecting deception and food fraud attempts.

Abstract
Domestic waste is prone to produce a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which often has unpleasant odors. A key process in treating odor gases is predicting the production of odors from domestic waste. In this study, four factors of domestic waste (weight, wet composition, temperature, and fermentation time) were adopted to be the prediction indicators in the prediction for domestic waste odor gases. Machine learning models (Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM) were established using the odor intensity values of 512 odor gases from domestic waste. Based on these data, the regression prediction with supervised machine learning was achieved, in which three different algorithmic models were evaluated for prediction performance. A Random Forest model with a R2 value of 0.8958 demonstrated the most accurate prediction of the production of domestic waste odor gas based on our data. Furthermore, the prediction results in the Random Forest model were further discussed based on the microbial fermentation of domestic waste. In addition to enhancing our knowledge of the production of odor from domestic waste, we also explore the application of machine learning to odor pollution in our study.

Abstract
To rapidly detect whether apples are infected by fungi, a portable electronic nose was used in this study to collect the gas information from apples, and the collected information was processed by smoothing filtering, data dimensionality reduction, and outlier removal. Following this, we utilized K-nearest neighbors (KNN), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), a convolutional neural network (CNN), a back-propagation neural network (BPNN), a particle swarm optimization–back-propagation neural network (PSO-BPNN), a gray wolf optimization–backward propagation neural network (GWO-BPNN), and a sparrow search algorithm–backward propagation neural network (SSA-BPNN) model to discriminate apple samples, and adopted the 10-fold cross-validation method to evaluate the performance of each model. The results show that SSA can effectively optimize the performance of the BPNN, such that the recognition accuracy of the optimized SSA-BPNN model reaches 98.40%. This study provides an important reference value for the application of an electronic nose in the non-destructive and rapid detection of fungal infection in apples.

Abstract
Instrumental odour monitoring systems (IOMS) are intelligent electronic sensing tools for which the primary application is the generation of odour metrics that are indicators of odour as perceived by human observers. The quality of the odour sensor signal, the mathematical treatment of the acquired data, and the validation of the correlation of the odour metric are key topics to control in order to ensure a robust and reliable measurement. The research presents and discusses the use of different pattern recognition and feature extraction techniques in the elaboration and effectiveness of the odour classification monitoring model (OCMM). The effect of the rise, intermediate, and peak period from the original response curve, in collaboration with Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) as a pattern recognition algorithm, were investigated. Laboratory analyses were performed with real odour samples collected in a complex industrial plant, using an advanced smart IOMS. The results demonstrate the influence of the choice of method on the quality of the OCMM produced. The peak period in combination with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) highlighted the best combination on the basis of high classification rates. The paper provides information to develop a solution to optimize the performance of IOMS.
