S. Early detection of abiotic stress in plants through SNARE proteins using hybrid feature fusion model

Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for most of the population across the globe. Plants are often considered life savers for humanity, having evolved complex adaptations to cope with adverse environmental conditions. Protecting agricultural produce from devastating conditions such as stress is essential for the sustainable development of the nation. Plants respond to various environmental stressors such as drought, salinity, heat, cold, etc. Abiotic stress can significantly impact crop yield and development posing a major threat to agriculture. SNARE proteins play a major role in pathological processes as they are vital proteins in the life sciences. These proteins act as key players in stress responses. Feature extraction is essential for visualizing the underlying structure of the SNARE proteins in analyzing the root cause of abiotic stress in plants. To address this issue, we developed a hybrid model to capture the hidden structures of the SNAREs. A feature fusion technique has been devised by combining the potential strengths of convolutional neural networks (CNN) with a high dimensional radial basis function (RBF) network. Additionally, we employ a bi-directional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) network to classify the presence of SNARE proteins. Our feature fusion model successfully identified abiotic stress in plants with an accuracy of 74.6%. When compared with various existing frameworks, our model demonstrates superior classification results.

Application of computer vision in assessing crop abiotic stress: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Abiotic stressors impair crop yields and growth potential. Despite recent developments, no comprehensive literature review on crop abiotic stress assessment employing deep learning exists. Unlike conventional approaches, deep learning-based computer vision techniques can be employed in farming to offer a non-evasive and practical alternative.

METHODS

We conducted a systematic review using the revised Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement to assemble the articles on the specified topic. We confined our scope to deep learning-related journal articles that focused on classifying crop abiotic stresses. To understand the current state, we evaluated articles published in the preceding ten years, beginning in 2012 and ending on December 18, 2022.

RESULTS

After the screening, risk of bias, and certainty assessment using the PRISMA checklist, our systematic search yielded 14 publications. We presented the selected papers through in-depth discussion and analysis, highlighting current trends.

CONCLUSION

Even though research on the domain is scarce, we encountered 11 abiotic stressors across 7 crops. Pre-trained networks dominate the field, yet many architectures remain unexplored. We found several research gaps that future efforts may fill.

Exploiting Pre-Trained Convolutional Neural Networks for the Detection of Nutrient Deficiencies in Hydroponic Basil

Due to the integration of artificial intelligence with sensors and devices utilized by Internet of Things technology, the interest in automation systems has increased. One of the common features of both agriculture and artificial intelligence is recommendation systems that increase yield by identifying nutrient deficiencies in plants, consuming resources correctly, reducing damage to the environment and preventing economic losses. The biggest shortcomings in these studies are the scarcity of data and the lack of diversity. This experiment aimed to identify nutrient deficiencies in basil plants cultivated in a hydroponic system. Basil plants were grown by applying a complete nutrient solution as control and non-added nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K). Then, photos were taken to determine N, P and K deficiencies in basil and control plants. After a new dataset was created for the basil plant, pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) models were used for the classification problem. DenseNet201, ResNet101V2, MobileNet and VGG16 pretrained models were used to classify N, P and K deficiencies; then, accuracy values were examined. Additionally, heat maps of images that were obtained using the Grad-CAM were analyzed in the study. The highest accuracy was achieved with the VGG16 model, and it was observed in the heat map that VGG16 focuses on the symptoms.

FA-Net: A Fused Feature for Multi-Head Attention Recoding Network for Pear Leaf Nutritional Deficiency Diagnosis with Visual RGB-Image Depth and Shallow Features

Accurate diagnosis of pear tree nutrient deficiency symptoms is vital for the timely adoption of fertilization and treatment. This study proposes a novel method on the fused feature multi-head attention recording network with image depth and shallow feature fusion for diagnosing nutrient deficiency symptoms in pear leaves. First, the shallow features of nutrient-deficient pear leaf images are extracted using manual feature extraction methods, and the depth features are extracted by the deep network model. Second, the shallow features are fused with the depth features using serial fusion. In addition, the fused features are trained using three classification algorithms, F-Net, FC-Net, and FA-Net, proposed in this paper. Finally, we compare the performance of single feature-based and fusion feature-based identification algorithms in the nutrient-deficient pear leaf diagnostic task. The best classification performance is achieved by fusing the depth features output from the ConvNeXt-Base deep network model with shallow features using the proposed FA-Net network, which improved the average accuracy by 15.34 and 10.19 percentage points, respectively, compared with the original ConvNeXt-Base model and the shallow feature-based recognition model. The result can accurately recognize pear leaf deficiency images by providing a theoretical foundation for identifying plant nutrient-deficient leaves.

Ensemble Averaging of Transfer Learning Models for Identification of Nutritional Deficiency in Rice Plant

Computer vision-based automation has become popular in detecting and monitoring plants’ nutrient deficiencies in recent times. The predictive model developed by various researchers were so designed that it can be used in an embedded system, keeping in mind the availability of computational resources. Nevertheless, the enormous popularity of smart phone technology has opened the door of opportunity to common farmers to have access to high computing resources. To facilitate smart phone users, this study proposes a framework of hosting high end systems in the cloud where processing can be done, and farmers can interact with the cloud-based system. With the availability of high computational power, many studies have been focused on applying convolutional Neural Networks-based Deep Learning (CNN-based DL) architectures, including Transfer learning (TL) models on agricultural research. Ensembling of various TL architectures has the potential to improve the performance of predictive models by a great extent. In this work, six TL architectures viz. InceptionV3, ResNet152V2, Xception, DenseNet201, InceptionResNetV2, and VGG19 are considered, and their various ensemble models are used to carry out the task of deficiency diagnosis in rice plants. Two publicly available datasets from Mendeley and Kaggle are used in this study. The ensemble-based architecture enhanced the highest classification accuracy to 100% from 99.17% in the Mendeley dataset, while for the Kaggle dataset; it was enhanced to 92% from 90%.

DBA_SSD: A Novel End-to-End Object Detection Algorithm Applied to Plant Disease Detection

In response to the difficulty of plant leaf disease detection and classification, this study proposes a novel plant leaf disease detection method called deep block attention SSD (DBA_SSD) for disease identification and disease degree classification of plant leaves. We propose three plant leaf detection methods, namely, squeeze-and-excitation SSD (Se_SSD), deep block SSD (DB_SSD), and DBA_SSD. Se_SSD fuses SSD feature extraction network and attention mechanism channel, DB_SSD improves VGG feature extraction network, and DBA_SSD fuses the improved VGG network and channel attention mechanism. To reduce the training time and accelerate the training process, the convolutional layers trained in the Image Net image dataset by the VGG model are migrated to this model, whereas the collected plant leaves disease image dataset is randomly divided into training set, validation set, and test set in the ratio of 8:1:1. We chose the PlantVillage dataset after careful consideration because it contains images related to the domain of interest. This dataset consists of images of 14 plants, including images of apples, tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, and potatoes, as well as the leaves of other plants. In addition, data enhancement methods, such as histogram equalization and horizontal flip were used to expand the image data. The performance of the three improved algorithms is compared and analyzed in the same environment and with the classical target detection algorithms YOLOv4, YOLOv3, Faster RCNN, and YOLOv4 tiny. Experiments show that DBA_SSD outperforms the two other improved algorithms, and its performance in comparative analysis is superior to other target detection algorithms.

Effect of lacto-fermentation and freeze-drying on the quality of beetroot evaluated using machine vision and sensory analysis

This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of freeze-drying and lacto-fermentation on the texture parameters of images and sensory attributes of beetroots. The samples were imaged using a flatbed scanner, and textures from images converted to color channels L, a, b, R, G, B, X, Y, Z were computed. The discrimination of raw and processed beetroots was performed using models based on textures selected for each color channel. The sensory quality of processed samples was determined using the attributes related to smell, color, texture and taste. The highest discrimination accuracy of 97.25% was obtained for the model built for color channel b. The accuracies for other channels were equal to 96.25% for channel a, 95.25% for channel R, 95% for channel Y, 94.75% for channel B, 94.5% for channel X, 94% for channel L, 92.5% for channel G, 88.25% for channel Z. In the case of some models, the raw and lacto-fermented beetroots were discriminated with 100% correctness. The freeze-dried and freeze-dried lacto-fermented samples were also the most similar in terms of sensory attributes, such as off-odor, attractiveness color, beetroot color, crunchiness, hardness, bitter taste, overall quality. The results indicated that the image parameters and sensory attributes may be related.

UAV-Based Classification of Cercospora Leaf Spot Using RGB Images

Plant diseases can impact crop yield. Thus, the detection of plant diseases using sensors that can be mounted on aerial vehicles is in the interest of farmers to support decision-making in integrated pest management and to breeders for selecting tolerant or resistant genotypes. This paper investigated the detection of Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), caused by Cercospora beticola in sugar beet using RGB imagery. We proposed an approach to tackle the CLS detection problem using fully convolutional neural networks, which operate directly on RGB images captured by a UAV. This efficient approach does not require complex multi- or hyper-spectral sensors, but provides reliable results and high sensitivity. We provided a detection pipeline for pixel-wise semantic segmentation of CLS symptoms, healthy vegetation, and background so that our approach can automatically quantify the grade of infestation. We thoroughly evaluated our system using multiple UAV datasets recorded from different sugar beet trial fields. The dataset consisted of a training and a test dataset and originated from different fields. We used it to evaluate our approach under realistic conditions and analyzed its generalization capabilities to unseen environments. The obtained results correlated to visual estimation by human experts significantly. The presented study underlined the potential of high-resolution RGB imaging and convolutional neural networks for plant disease detection under field conditions. The demonstrated procedure is particularly interesting for applications under practical conditions, as no complex and cost-intensive measuring system is required.
