Leveraging a smartphone to perform time-gated luminescence measurements

Empowered by advanced on-board sensors, high-performance optics packages and ever-increasing computational power, smartphones have democratized data generation, collection, and analysis. Building on this capacity, many platforms have been developed to enable its use as an optical sensing platform for colorimetric and fluorescence measurements. In this paper, we report the ability to enable a smartphone to perform laboratory quality time-resolved analysis of luminescent samples via the exploitation of the rolling shutter mechanism of the native CMOS imager. We achieve this by leveraging the smartphone's standard image capture applications, commercially available image analysis software, and housing the device within a UV-LED containing case. These low-cost modifications enable us to demonstrate the smartphone's analytical potential by performing tasks ranging from authentication and encryption to the interrogation of packaging, compounds, and physical phenomena. This approach underscores the power of repurposing existing technologies to extend the reach and inclusivity of scientific exploration, opening new avenues for data collection and analysis.

3D-printed holder for drawing highly reproducible pencil-on-paper electrochemical devices

Pencil drawing is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways of fabricating miniaturized electrodes on a paper substrate. However, it is limited by the lack of reproducibility regarding the electrode drawing process. A 3D-printed pencil holder (3DPH) is proposed here for simple, reproducible, and low-cost hand-drawn fabrication of paper-based electrochemical devices. 3DPH was designed to keep pressure and angulation of the graphite mine constant on the paper substrate using a micromechanical pencil regardless of the user/operator. This approach significantly improved the reproducibility and cost of making reliable pencil-drawn electrodes. The results showed high reproducibility and accuracy of the 3DPH-assisted electrodes prepared by 4 different operators in terms of sheet resistance and electrochemical behavior. Cyclic voltammetric (CV) curves in the presence of [Fe(CN)₆]^3-/4- redox probe showed only 3.9% variation for the anodic peak currents of different electrodes prepared by different operators when compared with electrodes prepared without the 3D-printed support. SEM analyses revealed a more uniform graphite deposition/design of the electrodes prepared with 3DPH, which corroborates the results obtained by CV. As a proof of concept, 3DPH-assisted pencil-drawn graphite electrodes were employed for dopamine detection in synthetic saliva, showing a proportional increase in anodic peak current at 0.12 V vs. carbon pRE with increasing dopamine (DA) concentration, with a detection limit of 0.39μmol L^-1. Moreover recovery was in the range 93-104% of DA (4-7% RSD) in synthetic saliva for three different concentrations, demonstrating the reliability of the approach. Finally, we believe this approach can make pencil-drawn technology more robust, accessible, reliable, and inexpensive for real on-site applications, especially in hard-to-reach locations or research centers with little investment.

Kinetic Profiling of Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Biocatalysts in Continuous Flow by Online Mass Spectrometry

Enzyme kinetics is normally assessed by performing individual kinetic measurements using batch-type reactors (test tubes, microtiter plates), in which enzymes are mixed with different substrates. Some drawbacks of conventional methods are the large amounts of experimental materials, long analysis times, and limitations of spectrophotometry. Therefore, we have developed a method for facile determination of enzyme kinetics using online flow-based mass spectrometry. A concentration ramp of substrate or product was created by dynamically adjusting flow rates of pumps delivering stock solution of substrate and diluent. Precise kinetic measurements were performed by reaction product quantification and initial rate calculation. In the presence of ascending substrate concentrations, the rate of a target enzyme (penicillinase)-catalyzed hydrolysis was varied. By measuring the reaction product continuously, Michaelis constants (K_M) could be calculated. The enzyme kinetic measurements for hydrolysis of penicillins were conducted based on this simple, rapid, and low sample consumption online flow device. In the homogeneous reaction, the K_M values for amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin G, and penicillin V were 254.9 ± 14.5, 29.2 ± 0.3, 2.6 ± 0.1, and 5.4 ± 0.1 μM, respectively. In the heterogeneous reaction, the K_M values for amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin G, and penicillin V were 408.9 ± 75.1, 114.4 ± 8.0, 21.8 ± 0.7, and 83.3 ± 4.8 μM, respectively. Apart from enzyme assay, the showcased method for the generation of temporal concentration ramps can be utilized to perform rapid quantity calibrations for mass spectrometric analyses.

Electronic User Authentication Key for Access to HMI/SCADA via Unsecured Internet Networks

This paper discusses the development of new hardware and software for protecting access to HMI/SCADA systems via Unprotected Internet Networks (UPN), mainly when working remotely with confidential information. Based on the analysis carried out, it is shown that the existing vulnerabilities can be exploited by cybercriminals to steal passwords and user authentication logins. Modern protection technologies based on the OTP method have been investigated. Moreover, a new concept of information security for user authentication in UPNs when working with information remotely is proposed. The structure of the electronic key and the connection diagram based on the selected hardware modules have been developed. In addition, the two-level user identification algorithms and the firmware program code for the ATmega32U4 microcontroller are considered. Finally, to show the reliability and stability of the of the developed electronic user authentication key against any unexpected software hacking, a number of experiments have been performed.

Acceleration of Inner-Pairing Product Operation for Secure Biometric Verification

With the recent advances in mobile technologies, biometric verification is being adopted in many smart devices as a means for authenticating their owners. As biometric data leakage may cause stringent privacy issues, many proposals have been offered to guarantee the security of stored biometric data, i.e., biometric template. One of the most promising solutions is the use of a remote server that stores the template in an encrypted form and performs a biometric comparison on the ciphertext domain, using recently proposed functional encryption (FE) techniques. However, the drawback of this approach is that considerable computation is required for the inner-pairing product operation used for the decryption procedure of the underlying FE, which is performed in the authentication phase. In this paper, we propose an enhanced method to accelerate the inner-pairing product computation and apply it to expedite the decryption operation of FE and for faster remote biometric verification. The following two important observations are the basis for our improvement—one of the two arguments for the decryption operation does not frequently change over authentication sessions, and we only need to evaluate the product of multiple pairings, rather than individual pairings. From the results of our experiments, the proposed method reduces the time required to compute an inner-pairing product by 30.7%, compared to the previous best method. With this improvement, the time required for biometric verification is expected to decrease by up to 10.0%, compared to a naive method.

Optimized Authentication System with High Security and Privacy

Authentication and privacy play an important role in the present electronic world. Biometrics and especially fingerprint-based authentication are extremely useful for unlocking doors, mobile phones, etc. Fingerprint biometrics usually store the attributes of the minutia point of a fingerprint directly in the database as a user template. Existing research works have shown that from such insecure user templates, original fingerprints can be constructed. If the database gets compromised, the attacker may construct the fingerprint of a user, which is a serious security and privacy issue. Security of original fingerprints is therefore extremely important. Ali et al. have designed a system for secure fingerprint biometrics; however, their technique has various limitations and is not optimized. In this paper, first we have proposed a secure technique which is highly robust, optimized, and fast. Secondly, unlike most of the fingerprint biometrics apart from the minutiae point location and orientation, we have used the quality of minutiae points as well to construct an optimized template. Third, the template constructed is in 3D shell shape. We have rigorously evaluated the technique on nine different fingerprint databases. The obtained results from the experiments are highly promising and show the effectiveness of the technique.
