The Application of Wearable Sensors and Machine Learning Algorithms in Rehabilitation Training: A Systematic Review

The integration of wearable sensor technology and machine learning algorithms has significantly transformed the field of intelligent medical rehabilitation. These innovative technologies enable the collection of valuable movement, muscle, or nerve data during the rehabilitation process, empowering medical professionals to evaluate patient recovery and predict disease development more efficiently. This systematic review aims to study the application of wearable sensor technology and machine learning algorithms in different disease rehabilitation training programs, obtain the best sensors and algorithms that meet different disease rehabilitation conditions, and provide ideas for future research and development. A total of 1490 studies were retrieved from two databases, the Web of Science and IEEE Xplore, and finally 32 articles were selected. In this review, the selected papers employ different wearable sensors and machine learning algorithms to address different disease rehabilitation problems. Our analysis focuses on the types of wearable sensors employed, the application of machine learning algorithms, and the approach to rehabilitation training for different medical conditions. It summarizes the usage of different sensors and compares different machine learning algorithms. It can be observed that the combination of these two technologies can optimize the disease rehabilitation process and provide more possibilities for future home rehabilitation scenarios. Finally, the present limitations and suggestions for future developments are presented in the study.

A Two-Step Data Normalization Approach for Improving Classification Accuracy in the Medical Diagnosis Domain

Data normalization is a data preprocessing task and one of the first to be performed during intellectual analysis, particularly in the case of tabular data. The importance of its implementation is determined by the need to reduce the sensitivity of the artificial intelligence model to the values of the features in the dataset to increase the studied model’s adequacy. This paper focuses on the problem of effectively preprocessing data to improve the accuracy of intellectual analysis in the case of performing medical diagnostic tasks. We developed a new two-step method for data normalization of numerical medical datasets. It is based on the possibility of considering both the interdependencies between the features of each observation from the dataset and their absolute values to improve the accuracy when performing medical data mining tasks. We describe and substantiate each step of the algorithmic implementation of the method. We also visualize the results of the proposed method. The proposed method was modeled using six different machine learning methods based on decision trees when performing binary and multiclass classification tasks. We used six real-world, freely available medical datasets with different numbers of vectors, attributes, and classes to conduct experiments. A comparison between the effectiveness of the developed method and that of five existing data normalization methods was carried out. It was experimentally established that the developed method increases the accuracy of the Decision Tree and Extra Trees Classifier by 1–5% in the case of performing the binary classification task and the accuracy of the Bagging, Decision Tree, and Extra Trees Classifier by 1–6% in the case of performing the multiclass classification task. Increasing the accuracy of these classifiers only by using the new data normalization method satisfies all the prerequisites for its application in practice when performing various medical data mining tasks.

Smart Web Service of Ti-Based Alloy’s Quality Evaluation for Medical Implants Manufacturing

The production of biocompatible medical implants is accompanied by technological and time costs. As a result, to be used in the human body, such a product must be of the highest quality. Assessing the quality of biomedical implants made of titanium alloys is relevant given their impact on the health and life of their wearer. In the case of the production of such implants by additive technologies, an important task is to evaluate the properties of the alloys from which it is made. The modern development of Artificial Intelligence allows replacing traditional assessment methods with machine learning methods for such assessment. Existing machine learning methods demonstrate very low classification accuracy, and existing hybrid systems, although increasing classification accuracy, are not sufficient to apply such schemes in practice. The authors improved the hybrid PNN-SVM system to solve this problem in this paper. It is based on the combining use of PNN, Ito Decomposition, and SVM. The PNN’s summation layer outputs were used as additional attributes to an initial dataset. Ito decomposition was used to nonlinearly model relationships between features of an extended dataset. Further classification is carried out using SVM with a linear kernel. The proposed approach’s modeling is performed based on a real-world dataset using the smart web service designed by the authors. Experimentally found an increase in the classification accuracy by 6% of the proposed system compared to existing ones. It makes it possible to use it in practice. Designed smart web service, in which the authors implemented both improved and existing hybrid classification schemes allows to quickly, easily, and without high qualification of the user to implement and explore in more detail chosen classification scheme when classification tasks in various fields of industry.

Modeling of a Generic Edge Computing Application Design

Edge computing applications leverage advances in edge computing along with the latest trends of convolutional neural networks in order to achieve ultra-low latency, high-speed processing, low-power consumptions scenarios, which are necessary for deploying real-time Internet of Things deployments efficiently. As the importance of such scenarios is growing by the day, we propose to undertake two different kind of models, such as an algebraic models, with a process algebra called ACP and a coding model with a modeling language called Promela. Both approaches have been used to build models considering an edge infrastructure with a cloud backup, which has been further extended with the addition of extra fog nodes, and after having applied the proper verification techniques, they have all been duly verified. Specifically, a generic edge computing design has been specified in an algebraic manner with ACP, being followed by its corresponding algebraic verification, whereas it has also been specified by means of Promela code, which has been verified by means of the model checker Spin.

An Attention-Based Multilayer GRU Model for Multistep-Ahead Short-Term Load Forecasting†

Recently, multistep-ahead prediction has attracted much attention in electric load forecasting because it can deal with sudden changes in power consumption caused by various events such as fire and heat wave for a day from the present time. On the other hand, recurrent neural networks (RNNs), including long short-term memory and gated recurrent unit (GRU) networks, can reflect the previous point well to predict the current point. Due to this property, they have been widely used for multistep-ahead prediction. The GRU model is simple and easy to implement; however, its prediction performance is limited because it considers all input variables equally. In this paper, we propose a short-term load forecasting model using an attention based GRU to focus more on the crucial variables and demonstrate that this can achieve significant performance improvements, especially when the input sequence of RNN is long. Through extensive experiments, we show that the proposed model outperforms other recent multistep-ahead prediction models in the building-level power consumption forecasting.
