Bismuth Film along with dsDNA-Modified Electrode Surfaces as Promising (bio)Sensors in the Analysis of Heavy Metals in Soils

Heavy metals constitute pollutants that are particularly common in air, water, and soil. They are present in both urban and rural environments, on land, and in marine ecosystems, where they cause serious environmental problems since they do not degrade easily, remain almost unchanged for long periods, and bioaccumulate. The detection and especially the quantification of metals require a systematic process. Regular monitoring is necessary because of seasonal variations in metal levels. Consequently, there is a significant need for rapid and low-cost metal determination methods. In this study, we compare and analytically validate absorption spectrometry with a sensitive voltammetric method, which uses a bismuth film-plated electrode surface and applies stripping voltammetry. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) represents a well-established analytical technique, while the applicability of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) in complicated sample matrices such as soil samples is currently unknown. This sample-handling challenge is investigated in the present study. The results show that the AAS and ASV methods were satisfactorily correlated and showed that the metal concentration in soils was lower than the limit values but with an increasing trend. Therefore, continuous monitoring of metal levels in the urban complex of a city is necessary and a matter of great importance. The limits of detection of cadmium (Cd) were lower when using the stripping voltammetry (SWASV) graphite furnace technique compared with those obtained with AAS when using the graphite furnace. However, when using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (flame-AAS), the measurements tended to overestimate the concentration of Cd compared with the values found using SWASV. This highlights the differences in sensitivity and accuracy between these analytical methods for detecting Cd. The SWASV method has the advantage of being cheaper and faster, enabling the simultaneous determination of heavy elements across the range of concentrations that these elements can occur in Mediterranean soils. Additionally, a dsDNA biosensor is suggested for the discrimination of Cu(I) along with Cu(II) based on the oxidation peak of guanine, and adenine residues can be applied in the redox speciation analysis of copper in soil, which represents an issue of great importance.

Recent advances in the modification of electrodes for trace metal analysis: a review

This review paper summarizes the research published in the last five years on using different compounds and/or materials as modifiers for electrodes employed in trace heavy metal analysis. The main groups of modifiers are identified, and their single or combined application on the surface of the electrodes is discussed. Nanomaterials, film-forming substances, and polymers are among the most used compounds employed mainly in the modification of glassy carbon, screen-printed, and carbon paste electrodes. Composites composed of several compounds and/or materials have also found growing interest in the development of modified electrodes. Environmentally friendly substances and natural products (mainly biopolymers and plant extracts) have continued to be included in the modification of electrodes for trace heavy metal analysis. The main analytical performance parameters of the modified electrodes as well as possible interferences affecting the determination of the target analytes, are discussed. Finally, a critical evaluation of the main findings from these studies and an outlook discussing possible improvements in this area of research are presented.

Recent advances in instrumental techniques for heavy metal quantification

Heavy metals (HMs) are ubiquitous; they are found in soil, water, air, and all biological matrices. The toxicity, bioaccumulation potential, and deleterious effects of most of these metals on humans and the environment have been widely documented. Consequently, the detection and quantification of HMs in various environmental samples have become a pressing issue. The analysis of the concentrations of HMs is a vital component of environmental monitoring; hence, the selection of the most suitable analytical technique for their determination has become a topic of great interest in food, environment, and human health safety. Analytical techniques for the quantification of these metals have evolved. Presently, a broad range of HM analytical techniques are available with each having its outstanding merits as well as limitations. Most analytical scientists, therefore, adopt complementation of more than one method, with the choice influenced by the specific metal of interest, desired limits of detection and quantification, nature of the interference, level of sensitivity, and precision among others. Sequel to the above, this work comprehensively reviews the most recent advances in instrumental techniques for the determination of HMs. It gives a general overview of the concept of HMs, their sources, and why their accurate quantification is pertinent. It highlights various conventional and more advanced techniques for HM determination, and as one of its kind, it also gives special attention to the specific merits and demerits of the analytical techniques. Finally, it presents the most recent studies in this regard.

A novel electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of Cd2+ and Pb2+ by MXene aerogel-CuO/carbon cloth flexible electrode based on oxygen vacancy and bismuth film

Herein, a novel MXene aerogel-CuO/carbon cloth (MXA-CuO/CC) electrochemical sensor was constructed, and the synergistic adsorption of heavy metal ions by oxygen vacancies and Bi (III) was investigated with Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ as detection targets. The oxygen vacancies of CuO have a strong affinity for heavy metal ions, which promoted the adsorption of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ on the electrode surface. In addition, the introduced Bi (III) can form alloys with heavy metal ions, which effectively enhanced the adsorption capacity of sensing electrodes for Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was used to study the performance of MXA-CuO/CC sensitive electrode for the detection of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ separately and simultaneously. The constructed sensing electrode has excellent detection performance, and can detect Cd²⁺ (4 μg L^-1- 800 μg L^-1) and Pb²⁺ (4 μg L^-1- 1200 μg L^-1) simultaneously with detection limits of 0.3 μg L^-1 (Cd²⁺) and 0.2 μg L^-1 (Pb²⁺), respectively. The proposed sensor electrode also has good anti-interference performance, excellent stability and reproducibility. It is worth mentioning that the proposed method can accurately detect Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ in food and water samples, which is consistent with the detection results of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS).

A High-Detection-Efficiency Optoelectronic Device for Trace Cadmium Detection

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in soil is a serious threat to food security and human health, while, currently, the most widely used detection methods cannot accurately reflect the content of heavy metals in soil. Soil heavy metal detection combined with microelectronic sensors has become an important means of environmental heavy metal pollution prevention and control. X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) can capture the excitation spectrum of metal elements, which is often used to detect Cd (II). However, due to the lack of high-performance optoelectronic devices, the analysis accuracy of the system cannot meet the requirements. Therefore, this study proposes a high-detection-efficiency photodiode (HDEPD) which can effectively improve the detection accuracy of the analyzer. The HDEPD is manufactured based on a 0.18 μm standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process. The volt-ampere curve, spectral response and noise characteristics of the device are obtained by constructing a test circuit combined with a spectral detection system. The test results show that the threshold voltage of HDEPD is 12.15 V. When the excess bias voltage increases from 1 V to 3 V, the spectral response peak of the device appears at 500 nm, and the photon detection probability (PDP) increases from 41.7% to 52.8%. The dark count rate (DCR) is 31.9 Hz/μm² at a 3 V excess bias voltage. Since the excitation spectrum peak of Cd (II) is between 500 nm and 600 nm, the wavelength response range of HDEPD fully meets the detection requirements of Cd (II).
