An automated segmentation of coronary artery calcification using deep learning in specific region limitation

Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a frequent disease of the arteries that supply the surface of the heart muscle. Leaving a severe disease untreated can make it permanent. Computer tomography (CT), which is well known for its ability to quantify the Agatston score, is used to visualize high-resolution CACs. CAC segmentation is still an important topic. Our goal is to automatically segment CAC in a specific area and measure the Agatston score in 2D images. The heart region is limited using a threshold, unused structures are removed using 2D connectivity (muscle, lung, ribcage), the heart cavity is extracted using the convex hull of the lungs, and the CAC is then segmented in 2D using a convolutional neural network (U-Net models/SegNet-VGG16 with transfer learning). The Agatston score prediction is calculated for CAC quantification. The proposed strategy is tested through experiments, which yield encouraging outcomes. Introduction of Materials Genome Technology and Its Applications in the Field of Biomedical Materials

Traditional research and development (R&D) on biomedical materials depends heavily on the trial and error process, thereby leading to huge economic and time burden. Most recently, materials genome technology (MGT) has been recognized as an effective approach to addressing this problem. In this paper, the basic concepts involved in the MGT are introduced, and the applications of MGT in the R&D of metallic, inorganic non-metallic, polymeric, and composite biomedical materials are summarized; in view of the existing limitations of MGT for R&D of biomedical materials, potential strategies are proposed on the establishment and management of material databases, the upgrading of high-throughput experimental technology, the construction of data mining prediction platforms, and the training of relevant materials talents. In the end, future trend of MGT for R&D of biomedical materials is proposed.

Multi-constraints based deep learning model for automated segmentation and diagnosis of coronary artery disease in X-ray angiographic images

BACKGROUND

The detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) from the X-ray coronary angiography is a crucial process which is hindered by various issues such as presence of noise, insufficient contrast of the input images along with the uncertainties caused by the motion due to respiration and variation of angles of vessels.

METHODS

In this article, an Automated Segmentation and Diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease (ASCARIS) model is proposed in order to overcome the prevailing challenges in detection of CAD from the X-ray images. Initially, the preprocessing of the input images was carried out by using the modified wiener filter for the removal of both internal and external noise pixels from the images. Then, the enhancement of contrast was carried out by utilizing the optimized maximum principal curvature to preserve the edge information thereby contributing to increasing the segmentation accuracy. Further, the binarization of enhanced images was executed by the means of OTSU thresholding. The segmentation of coronary arteries was performed by implementing the Attention-based Nested U-Net, in which the attention estimator was incorporated to overcome the difficulties caused by intersections and overlapped arteries. The increased segmentation accuracy was achieved by performing angle estimation. Finally, the VGG-16 based architecture was implemented to extract threefold features from the segmented image to perform classification of X-ray images into normal and abnormal classes.

RESULTS

The experimentation of the proposed ASCARIS model was carried out in the MATLAB R2020a simulation tool and the evaluation of the proposed model was compared with several existing approaches in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, revised contrast to noise ratio, mean square error, dice coefficient, Jaccard similarity, Hausdorff distance, Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), segmentation accuracy and ROC curve.

DISCUSSION

The results obtained conclude that the proposed model outperforms the existing approaches in all the evaluation metrics thereby achieving optimized classification of CAD. The proposed method removes the large number of background artifacts and obtains a better vascular structure.

Deep-Learning-Based Coronary Artery Calcium Detection from CT Image

One of the most common methods for diagnosing coronary artery disease is the use of the coronary artery calcium score CT. However, the current diagnostic method using the coronary artery calcium score CT requires a considerable time, because the radiologist must manually check the CT images one-by-one, and check the exact range. In this paper, three CNN models are applied for 1200 normal cardiovascular CT images, and 1200 CT images in which calcium is present in the cardiovascular system. We conduct the experimental test by classifying the CT image data into the original coronary artery calcium score CT images containing the entire rib cage, the cardiac segmented images that cut out only the heart region, and cardiac cropped images that are created by using the cardiac images that are segmented into nine sub-parts and enlarged. As a result of the experimental test to determine the presence of calcium in a given CT image using Inception Resnet v2, VGG, and Resnet 50 models, the highest accuracy of 98.52% was obtained when cardiac cropped image data was applied using the Resnet 50 model. Therefore, in this paper, it is expected that through further research, both the simple presence of calcium and the automation of the calcium analysis score for each coronary artery calcium score CT will become possible.
