A Review on Deep Learning for Quality of Life Assessment Through the Use of Wearable Data

Quality of Life (QoL) assessment has evolved over time, encompassing diverse aspects of human existence beyond just health. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the integration of Deep Learning (DL) techniques in QoL assessment, focusing on the analysis of wearable data. QoL, as defined by the World Health Organisation, encompasses physical, mental, and social well-being, making it a multifaceted concept. Traditional QoL assessment methods, often reliant on subjective reports or informal questioning, face challenges in quantification and standardization. To address these challenges, DL, a branch of machine learning inspired by the human brain, has emerged as a promising tool. DL models can analyze vast and complex datasets, including patient-reported outcomes, medical images, and physiological signals, enabling a deeper understanding of factors influencing an individual's QoL. Notably, wearable sensory devices have gained prominence, offering real-time data on vital signs and enabling remote healthcare monitoring. This review critically examines DL's role in QoL assessment through the use of wearable data, with particular emphasis on the subdomains of physical and psychological well-being. By synthesizing current research and identifying knowledge gaps, this review provides valuable insights for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers aiming to enhance QoL assessment with DL. Ultimately, the paper contributes to the adoption of advanced technologies to improve the well-being and QoL of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Medication Management Initiatives Using Wearable Devices: Scoping Review

Background

Wearable devices (WDs) have evolved beyond simple fitness trackers to sophisticated health monitors capable of measuring vital signs, such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Their application in health care, particularly medication management, is an emerging field poised to significantly enhance patient adherence to treatment regimens. Despite their widespread use and increasing incorporation into clinical trials, a comprehensive review of WDs in terms of medication adherence has not been conducted.

Objective

This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive scoping review to evaluate the impact of WDs on medication adherence across a variety of diseases, summarizing key research findings, outcomes, and challenges encountered.

Methods

Adhering to PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines, a structured search was conducted across MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase databases, covering the literature from January 1, 2010, to September 30, 2022. The search strategy was based on terms related to WDs and medication adherence, specifically focusing on empirical studies to ensure the inclusion of original research findings. Studies were selected based on their relevance to medication adherence, usage of WDs in detecting medication-taking actions, and their role in integrated medication management systems.

Results

We screened 657 articles and identified 18 articles. The identified studies demonstrated the diverse applications of WDs in enhancing medication adherence across diseases such as Parkinson disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions. The geographical distribution and publication years of these studies indicate a growing interest in this research area. The studies were divided into three types: (1) studies reporting a correlation between data from WDs or their usage and medication adherence or drug usage as outcomes, (2) studies using WDs to detect the act of medication-taking itself, and (3) studies proposing an integrated medication management system that uses WDs in managing medication.

Conclusions

WDs are increasingly being recognized for their potential to enhance medication management and adherence. This review underscores the need for further empirical research to validate the effectiveness of WDs in real-life settings and explore their use in predicting adherence based on activity rhythms and activities. Despite technological advancements, challenges remain regarding the integration of WDs into routine clinical practice. Future research should focus on leveraging the comprehensive data provided by WDs to develop personalized medication management strategies that can improve patient outcomes.

Sea Horse Optimization-Deep Neural Network: A Medication Adherence Monitoring System Based on Hand Gesture Recognition

Medication adherence is an essential aspect of healthcare for patients and is important for achieving medical objectives. However, the lack of standard techniques for measuring adherence is a global concern, making it challenging to accurately monitor and measure patient medication regimens. The use of sensor technology for medication adherence monitoring has received much attention lately since it makes it possible to continuously observe patients' medication adherence behavior. Sensor devices or smart wearables utilize state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) methods to analyze intricate data patterns and provide predictions accurately. The key aim of this work is to develop a sensor-based hand gesture recognition model to predict medication activities. In this research, a smart sensor device-based hand gesture prediction model is developed to recognize medication intake activities. The device includes a tri-axial gyroscope, geometric, and accelerometer sensors to sense and gather data from hand gestures. A smartphone application gathers hand gesture data from the sensor device, which is then stored in the cloud database in a .csv format. These data are collected, processed, and classified to recognize the medication intake activity using the proposed novel neural network model called Sea Horse Optimization-Deep Neural Network (SHO-DNN). The SHO technique is implemented to update the biases and weights and the number of hidden layers in the DNN model. By updating these parameters, the DNN model is improved in classifying the samples of hand gestures to identify the medication activities. The research model demonstrates impressive performance, with an accuracy of 98.59%, sensitivity of 97.82%, precision of 98.69%, and an F1 score of 98.48%. Hence, the proposed model outperformed the most available models in all the aforementioned aspects. The results indicate that this model is a promising approach for medication adherence monitoring in healthcare applications, instilling confidence in its effectiveness.

Exploration of smart adherence-monitoring methods in vitamin D-deficient patients: A pilot feasibility clinical study

Treatment adherence is an underestimated determinant of treatment success. Poor treatment adherence can also affect the efficacy of clinical trials. A combination of multiple adherence-monitoring methods is required to ensure robustness. We investigated whether multiple adherence-monitoring methods, including a novel smartwatch-based monitoring method, would yield reliable and concordant results. In this open, randomized, decentralized clinical trial, vitamin D-deficient individuals were randomized to an App - only group (an electronic medication diary) or an App + Watch group (i.e., App and smartwatch-based monitoring) groups after a week run-in period. The participants received vitamin D supplements (1000 IU) for 12 weeks (two consecutive periods of 6 weeks) with two pill counts (at the sixth week) and biweekly blood samplings for serum 25(OH) vitamin D concentration. Adherence was assessed and compared between the methods. Sixteen participants were enrolled, of which 13 completed the study. Serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels comparably increased in both groups until the first 7 weeks but trended higher in the App + Watch group in the second period. The number of doses recorded by the pill count and App did not differ significantly between the run-in and Period 1 (p = 0.5534) but became significantly discrepant in Period 2 (p = 0.0225). In contrast, the concordance for smartwatch-based monitoring was consistent in either period (p = 0.5898 and p = 0.5839, respectively). We explored multiple adherence-monitoring methods in this pilot feasibility clinical study. Smartwatch-based adherence monitoring may be an objective and sensitive method for measuring treatment adherence.

Athlete Behavior Recognition Technology Based on Siamese-RPN Tracker Model

With the rapid development of deep learning algorithms, it is gradually applied in UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) driving, visual recognition, target tracking, behavior recognition, and other fields. In the field of sports, many scientists put forward the research of target tracking and recognition technology based on deep learning algorithms for athletes' trajectory and behavior capture. Based on the target tracking algorithm, a regional proposal network RPN algorithm combined with the twin regional proposal network Siamese algorithm is proposed to study the tracking and recognition technology of athletes' behavior. Then, the adaptive updating network is used to track the behavior target of athletes, and the simulation model of behavior recognition is established. This algorithm is different from the traditional twin network algorithm. It can accurately take the athlete's behavior as the target candidate box in model training and reduce the interference of environment and other factors on model recognition. The results show that the Siamese-RPN algorithm can reduce the interference from the background and environment when tracking the athletes' target behavior trajectory. This algorithm can improve the training behavior recognition model, ignore the background interference elements of the behavior image, and improve the accuracy and overall performance of the model. Compared with the traditional twin network method for sports behavior recognition, the Siamese-RPN algorithm studied in this paper can perform offline operations and distinguish the interference factors of athletes' background environment. It can quickly capture the characteristic points of athletes' behavior as the data input of the tracking model, so it has excellent popularization and application value.
