Advances in Tapered Optical Fiber Sensor Structures: From Conventional to Novel and Emerging

Optical fiber sensors based on tapered optical fiber (TOF) structure have attracted a considerable amount of attention from researchers due to the advantages of simple fabrication, high stability, and diverse structures, and have great potential for applications in many fields such as physics, chemistry, and biology. Compared with conventional optical fibers, TOF with their unique structural characteristics significantly improves the sensitivity and response speed of fiber-optic sensors and broadens the application range. This review presents an overview of the latest research status and characteristics of fiber-optic sensors and TOF sensors. Then, the working principle of TOF sensors, fabrication schemes of TOF structures, novel TOF structures in recent years, and the growing emerging application areas are described. Finally, the development trends and challenges of TOF sensors are prospected. The objective of this review is to convey novel perspectives and strategies for the performance optimization and design of TOF sensors based on fiber-optic sensing technologies.

Formation of a D-shaped optical fiber by in-cavity online polishing for high resolution sensing in a chaotic correlation fiber loop ring down system

Online monitoring of the polishing process of a D-shaped optical fiber sensor is performed in this paper by means of a chaotic correlation fiber loop ring down (CCFLRD) system. The ring down time of the autocorrelation coefficient decreases with the increase in polishing loss caused by different mesh sizes. A comparison of the sensitivity and resolution of the CCFLRD system with different polishing losses in the length of a fiber loop cavity are carried out. Online polishing in the fiber loop cavity with a very short length is proposed and demonstrated using different polishing mesh numbers to increase the sensitivity and resolution of the system. A high sensitivity of 31.871n s -1 R I U -1 and resolution of 10-4 R I U for refractive index sensing in the range of 1.3347-1.3721 correspond to different concentrations of sodium chloride.

Sequential Dual Coating with Thermosensitive Polymers for Advanced Fiber Optic Temperature Sensors

We systematically designed dual polymer Fabry-Perrot interferometer (DPFPI) sensors, which were used to achieve highly sensitive temperature sensors. The designed and fabricated DPFPI has a dual polymer coating layer consisting of thermosensitive poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC) polymers. Four different DPFPI sensors were developed, in which different coating optical path lengths and the resultant optical properties were generated by the Vernier effect, changing the sequence of the applied polymers and varying the concentration of the coating solutions. The experimental results confirmed that the PC_PMMA_S1 DPFPI sensor delivered a temperature sensitivity of 1238.7 pm °C^-1, which was approximately 4.4- and 1.4-fold higher than that of the PMMA and PMMA_PC_S1-coated sensor, respectively. Thus, the results reveal that the coating sequence, the compact thickness of the dual polymer layers, and the resultant optical parameters are accountable for achieving sensors with high sensitivity. In the PC_ PMMA-coated sensor, the PMMA outer layer has comparatively better optical properties than the PC, which might produce synergistic effects that create a large wavelength shift with small temperature deviations. Therefore, it is considered that the extensive results with the PC_PMMA_S1 DPFPI sensor validate the efficacy, repeatability, reliability, quick reaction, feasibility, and precision of the temperature readings.

Static and Dynamic Multiparameter Assessment of Structural Elements Using Chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings

This paper presents the development, analysis, and application of chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) for dynamic and static measurements of beams of different materials in the single-cantilever configuration. In this case, the beams were numerically analyzed using the finite-element method (FEM) for the assessment of the natural frequencies and vibration modes of the beam for the dynamic analysis of the structural element. Furthermore, the static numerical analysis was performed using a load at the free end of the beam, where the maximum strain and its distribution along the beam were analyzed, especially in the region at which the FBG was positioned. The experimental evaluation of the proposed CFBG sensor was performed in static conditions for forces from 0 to 50 N (in 10 N steps) applied at the free end of the beam, whereas the dynamic evaluation was performed by means of positioning an unbalanced motor at the end of the beam, which was excited at 16 Hz, 65 Hz, 100 Hz, and 131 Hz. The results showed the feasibility of the proposed device for the simultaneous assessment of the force and strain distribution along the CFBG region using the wavelength shift and the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM), respectively. In these cases, the determination coefficients of the spectral features as a function of the force and strain distribution were higher than 0.99 in all analyzed cases, where a potential resolution of 0.25 N was obtained on the force assessment. In the dynamic tests, the frequency spectrum of the sensor responses indicated a frequency peak at the excited frequency in all analyzed cases. Therefore, the proposed sensor device is a suitable option to extend the performance of sensors for structural health assessment, since it is possible to simultaneously measure different parameters in dynamic and static conditions using only one sensor device, which, due to its multiplexing capabilities, can be integrated with additional optical fiber sensors for the complete shape reconstruction with millimeter-range spatial resolution.

Cost-Effective Fiber Optic Solutions for Biosensing

In the last years, optical fiber sensors have proven to be a reliable and versatile biosensing tool. Optical fiber biosensors (OFBs) are analytical devices that use optical fibers as transducers, with the advantages of being easily coated and biofunctionalized, allowing the monitorization of all functionalization and detection in real-time, as well as being small in size and geometrically flexible, thus allowing device miniaturization and portability for point-of-care (POC) testing. Knowing the potential of such biosensing tools, this paper reviews the reported OFBs which are, at the moment, the most cost-effective. Different fiber configurations are highlighted, namely, end-face reflected, unclad, D- and U-shaped, tips, ball resonators, tapered, light-diffusing, and specialty fibers. Packaging techniques to enhance OFBs' application in the medical field, namely for implementing in subcutaneous, percutaneous, and endoscopic operations as well as in wearable structures, are presented and discussed. Interrogation approaches of OFBs using smartphones' hardware are a great way to obtain cost-effective sensing approaches. In this review paper, different architectures of such interrogation methods and their respective applications are presented. Finally, the application of OFBs in monitoring three crucial fields of human life and wellbeing are reported: detection of cancer biomarkers, detection of cardiovascular biomarkers, and environmental monitoring.
