Abstract
Background and Objectives: Muscle strength evaluation using high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) was recently developed for the detailed analysis of the motor unit (MU). Detection of the spatial distribution of sEMG can detect changes in MU recruitment patterns resulting from muscle-strengthening exercises. We conducted a prospective study in 2022 to evaluate the safety and feasibility of transcutaneous electrical sensory stimulation (TESS) therapy using an interferential current device (IFCD) in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) undergoing chemoradiotherapy (CRT), and reported the safety and feasibility of TESS. We evaluated the efficacy of swallowing exercises in patients with HNSCC undergoing CRT and determined the significance of sEMG in evaluating swallowing function. Materials and Methods: In this supplementary study, the patients performed muscle-strengthening exercises five days a week. The association of the effects of the exercises with body mass index, skeletal muscle mass index, HD-sEMG, tongue muscle strength, and tongue pressure were evaluated. Results: We found significant correlations between the rate of weight loss and skeletal muscle mass index reduction and the rate of change in the recruitment of the MU of the suprahyoid muscle group measured using HD-sEMG. Conclusions: We believe that nutritional supplementation is necessary in addition to muscle strengthening during CRT.

Abstract
Cycling is a popular sport, and the cycling population and prevalence of related injuries and diseases increase simultaneously. Iliotibial band friction syndrome is a common chronic overuse injury caused by repetitive knee use in cycling. Self-myofascial release using foam rollers is an effective intervention for this syndrome; however, studies reporting positive results on self-myofascial release in cycling are limited. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of self-myofascial release on pain and iliotibial band flexibility, heart rate, and exercise performance (cadence, power, and record) in adult male cyclists with iliotibial band friction syndrome. We evaluated the pain and exercise ability of the control (n = 11) and self-myofascial release (n = 11) groups before and after cycling twice. Significant differences were observed in the pain scale, the iliotibial band flexibility, and cycling pain and power. The posterior cadence of the self-myofascial release group was 3.2% higher than that of the control group. The control group's record time increased by 74.64 s in the second cycling session compared to the first cycling session, while that of the self-myofascial release group decreased by 30.91 s in the second cycling session compared to the first cycling session. Self-myofascial release is effective in relieving pain and may improve cycling performance by increasing the iliotibial band flexibility.

Abstract
Our understanding of the firing behaviour of motoneuron (MN) pools during human voluntary muscle contractions is currently limited to electrophysiological findings from animal experiments extrapolated to humans, mathematical models of MN pools not validated for human data, and experimental results obtained from decomposition of electromyographical (EMG) signals. These approaches are limited in accuracy or provide information on only small partitions of the MN population. Here, we propose a method based on the combination of high-density EMG (HDEMG) data and realistic modelling for predicting the behaviour of entire pools of motoneurons in humans. The method builds on a physiologically realistic model of a MN pool which predicts, from the experimental spike trains of a smaller number of individual MNs identified from decomposed HDEMG signals, the unknown recruitment and firing activity of the remaining unidentified MNs in the complete MN pool. The MN pool model is described as a cohort of single-compartment leaky fire-and-integrate (LIF) models of MNs scaled by a physiologically realistic distribution of MN electrophysiological properties and driven by a spinal synaptic input, both derived from decomposed HDEMG data. The MN spike trains and effective neural drive to muscle, predicted with this method, have been successfully validated experimentally. A representative application of the method in MN-driven neuromuscular modelling is also presented. The proposed approach provides a validated tool for neuroscientists, experimentalists, and modelers to infer the firing activity of MNs that cannot be observed experimentally, investigate the neuromechanics of human MN pools, support future experimental investigations, and advance neuromuscular modelling for investigating the neural strategies controlling human voluntary contractions. Our experimental understanding of the firing behaviour of motoneuron (MN) pools during human voluntary muscle contractions is currently limited to the observation of small samples of active MNs obtained from EMG decomposition. EMG decomposition therefore provides an important but incomplete description of the role of individual MNs in the firing activity of the complete MN pool, which limits our understanding of the neural strategies of the whole MN pool and of how the firing activity of each MN contributes to the neural drive to muscle. Here, we combine decomposed high-density EMG (HDEMG) data and a physiologically realistic model of MN population to predict the unknown recruitment and firing activity of the remaining unidentified MNs in the complete MN pool. In brief, an experimental estimation of the synaptic current is input to a cohort of MN models, which are calibrated using the available decomposed HDEMG data, and predict the MN spike trains fired by the entire MN population. This novel approach is experimentally validated and applied to muscle force prediction from neuromuscular modelling.

Usefulness of Surface Electromyography Complexity Analyses to Assess the Effects of Warm-Up and Stretching during Maximal and Sub-Maximal Hamstring Contractions: A Cross-Over, Randomized, Single-Blind Trial. Abstract
This study aimed to apply different complexity-based methods to surface electromyography (EMG) in order to detect neuromuscular changes after realistic warm-up procedures that included stretching exercises. Sixteen volunteers conducted two experimental sessions. They were tested before, after a standardized warm-up, and after a stretching exercise (static or neuromuscular nerve gliding technique). Tests included measurements of the knee flexion torque and EMG of biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles. EMG was analyzed using the root mean square (RMS), sample entropy (SampEn), percentage of recurrence and determinism following a recurrence quantification analysis (%Rec and %Det) and a scaling parameter from a detrended fluctuation analysis. Torque was significantly greater after warm-up as compared to baseline and after stretching. RMS was not affected by the experimental procedure. In contrast, SampEn was significantly greater after warm-up and stretching as compared to baseline values. %Rec was not modified but %Det for BF muscle was significantly greater after stretching as compared to baseline. The a scaling parameter was significantly lower after warm-up as compared to baseline for ST muscle. From the present results, complexity-based methods applied to the EMG give additional information than linear-based methods. They appeared sensitive to detect EMG complexity increases following warm-up.
