Bioinspired nanoplatforms for human-machine interfaces: Recent progress in materials and device applications

The panoramic characteristics of human-machine interfaces (HMIs) have prompted the needs to update the biotechnology community with the recent trends, developments, and future research direction toward next-generation bioelectronics. Bioinspired materials are promising for integrating various bioelectronic devices to realize HMIs. With the advancement of scientific biotechnology, state-of-the-art bioelectronic applications have been extensively investigated to improve the quality of life by developing and integrating bioinspired nanoplatforms in HMIs. This review highlights recent trends and developments in the field of biotechnology based on bioinspired nanoplatforms by demonstrating recently explored materials and cutting-edge device applications. Section 1 introduces the recent trends and developments of bioinspired nanomaterials for HMIs. Section 2 reviews various flexible, wearable, biocompatible, and biodegradable nanoplatforms for bioinspired applications. Section 3 furnishes recently explored substrates as carriers for advanced nanomaterials in developing HMIs. Section 4 addresses recently invented biomimetic neuroelectronic, nanointerfaces, biointerfaces, and nano/microfluidic wearable bioelectronic devices for various HMI applications, such as healthcare, biopotential monitoring, and body fluid monitoring. Section 5 outlines designing and engineering of bioinspired sensors for HMIs. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for next-generation bioinspired nanoplatforms in extending the potential on HMIs are discussed for a near-future scenario. We believe this review can stimulate the integration of bioinspired nanoplatforms into the HMIs in addition to wearable electronic skin and health-monitoring devices while addressing prevailing and future healthcare and material-related problems in biotechnologies.

The Use of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy as a Tool for the In-Situ Monitoring and Characterization of Carbon Nanotube Aqueous Dispersions

So far, there is no validated technology for characterizing the dispersion and morphology state of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) aqueous dispersions during sonication. Taking advantage of the conductive nature of CNTs, the main hypothesis of the current study is that Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is an appropriate technique for the in-situ monitoring and qualification of the dispersion state of CNTs in aqueous media. To confirm our hypothesis, we monitored the Impedance |Z| during the sonication process as a function of type CNTs/admixtures used for the preparation of the aqueous solutions and of crucial process parameters, such as the applied sonication power and duration (i.e., sonication energy). For dispersions above the percolation threshold, a drop of |Z| by approximately seven orders of magnitude was observed, followed by a linear reduction. The dramatic change in |Z| is regarded as an indication of the formation of a conductive path or destruction of an existing one during sonication and can be used to characterize the dispersion and morphology state of CNTs. The results of the EIS provide, straightforwardly and reliably, the required information to create an optimum dispersion protocol for conductive CNT suspensions. The produced dispersions are part of research focusing on the manufacturing of cement-based composite materials with advanced thermoelectric functionalities for energy harvesting. Such dispersions are not only limited to energy harvesting applications but also to applications where functionalities are introduced through the use of conductive-based suspensions.

Skin bioelectronics towards long-term, continuous health monitoring

Skin bioelectronics are considered as an ideal platform for personalised healthcare because of their unique characteristics, such as thinness, light weight, good biocompatibility, excellent mechanical robustness, and great skin conformability. Recent advances in skin-interfaced bioelectronics have promoted various applications in healthcare and precision medicine. Particularly, skin bioelectronics for long-term, continuous health monitoring offer powerful analysis of a broad spectrum of health statuses, providing a route to early disease diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we discuss (1) representative healthcare sensing devices, (2) material and structure selection, device properties, and wireless technologies of skin bioelectronics towards long-term, continuous health monitoring, (3) healthcare applications: acquisition and analysis of electrophysiological, biophysical, and biochemical signals, and comprehensive monitoring, and (4) rational guidelines for the design of future skin bioelectronics for long-term, continuous health monitoring. Long-term, continuous health monitoring of advanced skin bioelectronics will open unprecedented opportunities for timely disease prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment, demonstrating great promise to revolutionise traditional medical practices.

Revolution in Flexible Wearable Electronics for Temperature and Pressure Monitoring—A Review

In the last few decades, technology innovation has had a huge influence on our lives and well-being. Various factors of observing our physiological characteristics are taken into account. Wearable sensing tools are one of the most imperative sectors that are now trending and are expected to grow significantly in the coming days. Externally utilized tools connected to any human to assess physiological characteristics of interest are known as wearable sensors. Wearable sensors range in size from tiny to large tools that are physically affixed to the user and operate on wired or wireless terms. With increasing technological capabilities and a greater grasp of current research procedures, the usage of wearable sensors has a brighter future. In this review paper, the recent developments of two important types of wearable electronics apparatuses have been discussed for temperature and pressure sensing (Psensing) applications. Temperature sensing (Tsensing) is one of the most important physiological factors for determining human body temperature, with a focus on patients with long-term chronic conditions, normally healthy, unconscious, and injured patients receiving surgical treatment, as well as the health of medical personnel. Flexile Psensing devices are classified into three categories established on their transduction mechanisms: piezoresistive, capacitive, and piezoelectric. Many efforts have been made to enhance the characteristics of the flexible Psensing devices established on these mechanisms.
