Multilayer network-based channel selection for motor imagery brain-computer interface

Objective. The number of electrode channels in a motor imagery-based brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) system influences not only its decoding performance, but also its convenience for use in applications. Although many channel selection methods have been proposed in the literature, they are usually based on the univariate features of a single channel. This leads to a loss of the interaction between channels and the exchange of information between networks operating at different frequency bands.Approach. We integrate brain networks containing four frequency bands into a multilayer network framework and propose a multilayer network-based channel selection (MNCS) method for MI-BCI systems. A graph learning-based method is used to estimate the multilayer network from electroencephalogram (EEG) data that are filtered by multiple frequency bands. The multilayer participation coefficient of the multilayer network is then computed to select EEG channels that do not contain redundant information. Furthermore, the common spatial pattern (CSP) method is used to extract effective features. Finally, a support vector machine classifier with a linear kernel is trained to accurately identify MI tasks.Main results. We used three publicly available datasets from the BCI Competition containing data on 12 healthy subjects and one dataset containing data on 15 stroke patients to validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. The results showed that the proposed MNCS method outperforms all channels (85.8% vs. 93.1%, 84.4% vs. 89.0%, 71.7% vs. 79.4%, and 72.7% vs. 84.0%). Moreover, it achieved significantly higher decoding accuracies on MI-BCI systems than state-of-the-art methods (pairedt-tests,p< 0.05).Significance. The experimental results showed that the proposed MNCS method can select appropriate channels to improve the decoding performance as well as the convenience of the application of MI-BCI systems.

Effective connectivity analysis of brain networks of mathematically gifted adolescents using transfer entropy

Using functional neuroimaging, electrophysiological techniques and neural data processing techniques, neuroscientists have found that mathematically gifted adolescents exhibit unusual neurocognitive features in the activation of task-related brain regions. Hemispheric information interaction, functional reorganization of networks, and utilization of task-related brain regions are beneficial to rapid and efficient task processing. Based on Granger causality channel selection, the transfer entropy (TE) value between effective channels was computed, and the information flow patterns in the directed functional brain networks derived from electroencephalography (EEG) data during deductive reasoning tasks were explored. We evaluated the workspace configuration patterns of the brain network and the global integration characteristics of separated brain regions using node strength, motif, directed clustering coefficient and characteristic path length in the brain networks of mathematically gifted adolescents with effective connectivity. The empirical results demonstrated that a more integrated functional network at the global level and a more efficient clique at the local level support a pattern of workspace configuration in the mathematically gifted brain that is more conducive to task-related information processing.

EEG emotion recognition based on cross-frequency granger causality feature extraction and fusion in the left and right hemispheres

EEG emotion recognition based on Granger causality (GC) brain networks mainly focus on the EEG signal from the same-frequency bands, however, there are still some causality relationships between EEG signals in the cross-frequency bands. Considering the functional asymmetric of the left and right hemispheres to emotional response, this paper proposes an EEG emotion recognition scheme based on cross-frequency GC feature extraction and fusion in the left and right hemispheres. Firstly, we calculate the GC relationship of EEG signals according to the frequencies and hemispheres, and mainly focus on the causality of the cross-frequency EEG signals in left and right hemispheres. Then, to remove the redundant connections of the GC brain network, an adaptive two-stage decorrelation feature extraction scheme is proposed under the condition of maintaining the best emotion recognition performance. Finally, a multi-GC feature fusion scheme is designed to balance the recognition accuracy and feature number of each GC feature, which comprehensively considers the influence of the recognition accuracy and computational complexity. Experimental results on the DEAP emotion dataset show that the proposed scheme can achieve an average accuracy of 84.91% for four classifications, which improved the classification accuracy by up to 8.43% compared with that of the traditional same-frequency band GC features.

Validation of Continuous Monitoring System for Epileptic Users in Outpatient Settings

Epilepsy is a chronic disease with a significant social impact, given that the patients and their families often live conditioned by the possibility of an epileptic seizure and its possible consequences, such as accidents, injuries, or even sudden unexplained death. In this context, ambulatory monitoring allows the collection of biomedical data about the patients’ health, thus gaining more knowledge about the physiological state and daily activities of each patient in a more personalized manner. For this reason, this article proposes a novel monitoring system composed of different sensors capable of synchronously recording electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), and ear electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and storing them for further processing and analysis in a microSD card. This system can be used in a static and/or ambulatory way, providing information about the health state through features extracted from the ear EEG signal and the calculation of the heart rate variability (HRV) and pulse travel time (PTT). The different applied processing techniques to improve the quality of these signals are described in this work. A novel algorithm used to compute HRV and PTT robustly and accurately in ambulatory settings is also described. The developed device has also been validated and compared with other commercial systems obtaining similar results. In this way, based on the quality of the obtained signals and the low variability of the computed parameters, even in ambulatory conditions, the developed device can potentially serve as a support tool for clinical decision-taking stages.
