Towards a Secure Technology-Driven Architecture for Smart Health Insurance Systems: An Empirical Study

Health insurance has become a crucial component of people's lives as the occurrence of health problems rises. Unaffordable healthcare problems for individuals with little income might be a problem. In the case of a medical emergency, health insurance assists individuals in affording the costs of healthcare services and protects them financially against the possibility of debt. Security, privacy, and fraud risks may impact the numerous benefits of health insurance. In recent years, health insurance fraud has been a contentious topic due to the substantial losses it causes for individuals, commercial enterprises, and governments. Therefore, there is a need to develop mechanisms for identifying health insurance fraud incidents. Furthermore, a large quantity of highly sensitive electronic health insurance data are generated on a daily basis, which attracts fraudulent users. Motivated by these facts, we propose a smart healthcare insurance framework for fraud detection and prevention (SHINFDP) that leverages the capabilities of cutting-edge technologies including blockchain, 5G, cloud, and machine learning (ML) to enhance the health insurance process. The proposed framework is evaluated using mathematical modeling and an industrial focus group. In addition, a case study was demonstrated to illustrate the SHINFDP's applicability in enhancing the security and effectiveness of health insurance. The findings indicate that the SHINFDP aids in the detection of healthcare fraud at early stages. Furthermore, the results of the focus group show that SHINFDP is adaptable and simple to comprehend. The case study further strengthens the findings and also describes the implications of the proposed solution in a real setting.

Transforming Clinical Information Systems: Empowering Healthcare through Telemedicine, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence Applications

OBJECTIVE

In this synopsis, the editors of the Clinical Information Systems (CIS) section of the IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics overview recent research and propose a selection of best papers published in 2022 in the CIS field.

METHODS

The editors follow a systematic approach to gather relevant articles and select the best papers for the section. This year, they updated the query to incorporate the topic of telemedicine and removed search terms related to geographic information systems. The revised query resulted in a larger number of identified papers, necessitating the appointment of a third section editor to handle the increased workload. The editors narrowed the initial pool of articles to 15 candidate papers through a multi-stage selection process. At least seven independent reviews were collected for each candidate paper, and a selection meeting with the IMIA Yearbook editorial board led to the final selection of the best papers for the CIS section.

RESULTS

The query was carried out in mid-January 2023 and retrieved a deduplicated result set of 5,206 articles from 1,500 journals. This year, 15 papers were nominated as candidates, and four were finally selected as the best papers in the CIS section.Including telemedicine in the query resulted in a substantial increase in the number of papers found. The analysis highlights the growing convergence between clinical information systems and telemedicine, with mobile health (mHealth) technologies and data science applications gaining prominence. The selected candidate papers emphasize the practical impact of research efforts, focusing on patient-centric outcomes and benefits, including intelligent mobile health monitoring systems and AI-assisted decision-making in healthcare.

CONCLUSIONS

Looking ahead, the field of CIS is expected to continue evolving, driven by advances in telemedicine, mHealth technologies, data science, and AI integration, leading to more efficient, patient-oriented, and intelligent healthcare systems and overall improvement of global healthcare outcomes.

Comparison of Collaborative and Cooperative Schemes in Sensor Networks for Non-Invasive Monitoring of People at Home

This paper looks at wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in healthcare, where they can monitor patients remotely. WSNs are considered one of the most promising technologies due to their flexibility and autonomy in communication. However, routing protocols in WSNs must be energy-efficient, with a minimal quality of service, so as not to compromise patient care. The main objective of this work is to compare two work schemes in the routing protocol algorithm in WSNs (cooperative and collaborative) in a home environment for monitoring the conditions of the elderly. The study aims to optimize the performance of the algorithm and the ease of use for people while analyzing the impact of the sensor network on the analysis of vital signs daily using medical equipment. We found relationships between vital sign metrics that have a more significant impact in the presence of a monitoring system. Finally, we conduct a performance analysis of both schemes proposed for the home tracking application and study their usability from the user's point of view.

Telemedicine, E-Health, and Multi-Agent Systems for Chronic Pain Management

Telemedicine, telehealth, and E-health all offer significant benefits for pain management and healthcare services by fostering the physician-patient relationship in otherwise challenging circumstances. A critical component of these artificial-intelligence-based health systems is the "agent-based system", which is rapidly evolving as a means of resolving complicated or straightforward problems. Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are well-established modeling and problem-solving modalities that model and solve real-world problems. MAS's core concept is to foster communication and cooperation among agents, which are broadly considered intelligent autonomous factors, to address diverse challenges. MAS are used in various telecommunications applications, including the internet, robotics, healthcare, and medicine. Furthermore, MAS and information technology are utilized to enhance patient-centered palliative care. While telemedicine, E-health, and MAS all play critical roles in managing chronic pain, the published research on their use in treating chronic pain is currently limited. This paper discusses why telemedicine, E-health, and MAS are the most critical novel technologies for providing healthcare and managing chronic pain. This review also provides context for identifying the advantages and disadvantages of each application's features, which may serve as a useful tool for researchers.

Overview of Mobile Communications in Colombia and Introduction to 5G

The deployment of 5G around the world continues to progress at a rapid pace, especially in North America and Asia. Its advantages and efficiency as a data transmission network have been widely demonstrated in different fields such as agriculture, education, health, and surveillance. However, this process does not have the same dynamics in Latin America, specifically in Colombia. The country is currently implementing actions aimed at facilitating the deployment of this technology in the short term, including pilot tests for the use of the radio spectrum, spectrum auctions, the planning of future auctions, and the review of spectrum caps. The results of this review allow us to conclude that despite the forecasts and the intentions of the Colombian government and mobile communication service operators, 5G in standalone mode will not be commercially available in Colombia before the end of 2023. The main failures in its deployment are related to the lack of available spectrum to support the ultrahigh-reliability and low-latency, enhanced mobile broadband, and massive machine-type communications scenarios, as well as the delay in the auction processes for its assignment.
