Natural Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots Obtained from Hydrothermal Carbonization of Chebulic Myrobalan and Their Sensing Ability toward Heavy Metal Ions

N-Doped Carbon Dots for Selective Detection of Fe3+ and Degradation of Fe3+/Basic Red 9 Complexes in Water Samples

In this work, the eco-friendly N-doped carbon dots KF-CDs and A-CDs were derived from kiwifruit by a simple one-step hydrothermal strategy at 180 °C for 6 h. KF-CDs have a high fluorescence quantum yield (27.85%), it is obviously rapid quenched by Fe3+, and have a good linear relationship from 1 to 8.26 µM (the detection limit was 0.077 µM). Basic red 9 is extensively used in biological, environmental and industry. Although it makes a great contribution to the economy, its toxicity should be taken seriously, especially with harmful metal ions. Within 2 h, A-CDs could degrade basic red 9 with degradation efficiency 89.6%, even though there was a stable compound formed with Fe3+ that the degradation efficiency was up to 88.3%. The results complement the research blank of carbon dots in catalytic degradation of basic red 9.

A review on green synthesis, biological applications of carbon dots in the field of drug delivery, biosensors, and bioimaging

Since the beginning of nanoscience and nanotechnology, carbon dots (CDs) have been the foundational idea and have dominated the growth of the nano-field. CDs are an intriguing platform for utilization in biology, technology, catalysis, and other fields thanks to their numerous distinctive structural, physicochemical, and photochemical characteristics. Since several carbon dots have already been created, they have been assessed based on their synthesis process, and luminescence characteristics. Due to their biocompatibility, less toxic effects, and most significantly their fluorescent features in contrast to other carbon nanostructures, CDs have several benefits. This review focuses on the most recent advancements in the characterization, applications, and synthesis techniques used for CDs made from natural sources. It will also direct scientists in the creation of a synthesis technique for adjustable carbon dots that is more practical, effective, and environmentally benign. With low toxicity and low cost, CDs are meeting the new era's requirements for more selectivity and sensitivity in the detection and sensing of various things, such as biomaterial sensing, enzymes, chemical contamination, and temperature sensing. Its variety of properties, such as optical properties, chemiluminescence, and morphological analysis, make it a good option to use in bioimaging, drug delivery, biosensors, and cancer diagnosis.

Citrus Medica-derived Fluorescent Carbon Dots for the Imaging of Vigna Radiate Root Cells

Bio-imaging is a crucial tool for researchers in the fields of cell biology and developmental biomedical sector. Among the various available imaging techniques, fluorescence based imaging stands out due to its high sensitivity and specificity. However, traditional fluorescent materials used in biological imaging often suffer from issues such as photostability and biocompatibility. Moreover, plant tissues contain compounds that cause autofluorescence and light scattering, which can hinder fluorescence microscopy effectiveness. This study explores the development of fluorescent carbon dots (Cm-CDs) synthesized from Citrus medica fruit extract for the fluorescence imaging of Vigna radiata root cells. The successful synthesis of CDs with an average size of 6.7 nm is confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and raman spectroscopy indicated that the obtained CDs are amorphous in nature. The presence of various functional groups on the surface of CDs were identified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The optical characteristics of Cm-CDs were studied by UV-Visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Cm-CDs demonstrated strong excitation-dependent fluorescence, good solubility, and effective penetration in to the Vigna radiata root cells with multicolor luminescence, and addressed autofluorescence issues. Additionally, a comparative analysis determined the optimal concentration for high-resolution, multi-color root cell imaging, with Cm-CD2 (2.5 mg/ml) exhibiting the highest photoluminescence (PL) intensity. These findings highlight the potential of Cm-CDs in enhancing direct endocytosis and overcoming autofluorescence in plant cell imaging, offering promising advancements for cell biology research.

Carbon Dots: Synthesis, Characterizations, and Recent Advancements in Biomedical, Optoelectronics, Sensing, and Catalysis Applications

Carbon nanodots (CNDs), a fascinating carbon-based nanomaterial (typical size 2-10 nm) owing to their superior optical properties, high biocompatibility, and cell penetrability, have tremendous applications in different interdisciplinary fields. Here, in this Review, we first explore the superiority of CNDs over other nanomaterials in the biomedical, optoelectronics, analytical sensing, and photocatalysis domains. Beginning with synthesis, characterization, and purification techniques, we even address fundamental questions surrounding CNDs such as emission origin and excitation-dependent behavior. Then we explore recent advancements in their applications, focusing on biological/biomedical uses like specific organelle bioimaging, drug/gene delivery, biosensing, and photothermal therapy. In optoelectronics, we cover CND-based solar cells, perovskite solar cells, and their role in LEDs and WLEDs. Analytical sensing applications include the detection of metals, hazardous chemicals, and proteins. In catalysis, we examine roles in photocatalysis, CO2 reduction, water splitting, stereospecific synthesis, and pollutant degradation. With this Review, we intend to further spark interest in CNDs and CND-based composites by highlighting their many benefits across a wide range of applications.

Layer-by-Layer Immobilization of DNA Aptamers on Ag-Incorporated Co-Succinate Metal-Organic Framework for Hg(II) Detection

Layer-by-layer (LbL) immobilization of DNA aptamers in the realm of electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions (HMIs) offers an enhancement in specificity, sensitivity, and low detection limits by leveraging the cross-reactivity obtained from multiple interactions between immobilized aptamers and developed material surfaces. In this research, we present a LbL approach for the immobilization of thiol- and amino-modified DNA aptamers on a Ag-incorporated cobalt-succinate metal-organic framework (MOF) (Ag@Co-Succinate) to achieve a cross-reactive effect on the electrochemical behavior of the sensor. The solvothermal method was utilized to synthesize Ag@Co-Succinate, which was also characterized through various techniques to elucidate its structure, morphology, and presence of functional groups, confirming its suitability as a host matrix for immobilizing both aptamers. The Ag@Co-Succinate aptasensor exhibited extraordinary sensitivity and selectivity towards Hg(II) ions in electrochemical detection, attributed to the unique binding properties of the immobilized aptamers. The exceptional limit of detection of 0.3 nM ensures the sensor's suitability for trace-level Hg(II) detection in various environmental and analytical applications. Furthermore, the developed sensor demonstrated outstanding repeatability, highlighting its potential for long-term and reliable monitoring of Hg(II).
