Body image concern and demographic characteristics as predictors of anxiety in adolescent girls

OBJECTIVES

Adolescence is a critical and sensitive period of growth, marked by significant physical and psychological changes. During this time, adolescents often experience increased anxiety and concerns about their body image. This study aims to examine body image concern and demographic characteristics as predictors of anxiety in adolescent girls.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included 381 female students aged 12-13 from Babol city. The participants were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria. Multi-stage sampling method was employed, and the samples were selected from six middle schools. The data collection tools consisted of a demographic information questionnaire, Littleton's body image concern scale, and Zung's anxiety scale.

RESULTS

The mean score for body image concern was 16.59±44.82, while the mean score for anxiety was 10.53±37.31. When investigating the relationship between body image concern and anxiety, a significant and positive correlation between these two variables was observed during regression analysis (p<0.001). Both univariate and multivariate regression analyses indicated that for every one-unit increase in students' body image concern score, their overall anxiety score increased by an average of 0.34 units in both models (B: 0.34, 95 % CI: 0.29-0.39) (p<0.001). Additionally, in univariate regression analyses students who received puberty information from sources other than their mother exhibited 2.68 units higher anxiety levels, which was statistically significant (B: 2.68, 95 % CI: 0.38-4.98) (p<0.001) and, concerning the preferred source of information, students who favored a non-mother source experienced 3.91 units increase in their anxiety score (B: 3.91, 95 % CI: 1.74-6.08) (p<0.001). The results of multivariate regression analysis showed that with the presence of all independent variables in the model, 30 % of the dependent variable changes can be predicted (explained) (R 2 =0.302).

CONCLUSIONS

The findings indicated a positive association between body image concerns and anxiety among students. Moreover, students who relied on sources other than their mother for obtaining information about puberty displayed higher levels of anxiety. Consequently, it is imperative to implement preventive and supportive programs targeting adolescents as well as empowering mothers to effectively deal with these issues.

Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcomes of Males with Central Precocious Puberty

Central precocious puberty (CPP) among males is less frequent than among females but more likely to have an underlying pathologic cause. Diagnosis of CPP is often straightforward among males because increased testicular volume, the first sign of puberty, can be verified although careful central nervous system (CNS) assessment is generally necessary. Treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) is indicated, given in conjunction with any therapy needed for CNS lesions. Monitoring of treatment usually can consist of evaluating growth and physical puberty and with testosterone levels as the only lab data. Short-term and long-term outcome data indicate efficacy and safety, although data are limited. Such data need to be reported.

New insights into precocious puberty and ADHD: a nationwide cohort study

BACKGROUND

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children; however, studies delineating the association between ADHD and central precocious puberty are limited. This study aimed to understand whether children with ADHD are at a higher risk of central precocious puberty.

METHODS

This population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan to investigate the association between ADHD and the incidence of central precocious puberty between 2000-2015. We identified ADHD individuals treated with methylphenidate, atomoxetine or not. The control cohort consisted of individuals without ADHD. The outcome measure was central precocious puberty diagnosis.

RESULTS

Among 290,148 children (mean age: 5.83 years), central precocious puberty incidence was 4.24 and 1.95 per 10⁵ person-years in the ADHD and control groups, respectively. Children with ADHD treated with medication had a higher risk than those without ADHD. However, medication use did not affect the incidence of central precocious puberty among children with ADHD.

CONCLUSION

This study showed an association between ADHD and a higher risk of central precocious puberty. Early referral of children with ADHD to a pediatric endocrinologist for evaluation may facilitate correct diagnoses and early interventions.

IMPACT

ADHD is associated with a higher risk of central precocious puberty. This study provides relevant findings, as it is the first nationwide, population-based cohort study to investigate the association between ADHD and the risk of central precocious puberty with a 15-year follow-up. Early referral of children with ADHD to a pediatric endocrinologist for the evaluation of suspected precocious puberty could facilitate correct diagnosis. Early intervention treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist might improve final height in children with central precocious puberty.

The Role of Genetics in Central Precocious Puberty: Confirmed and Potential Neuroendocrine Genetic and Epigenetic Contributors and Their Interactions with Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs)

Despite the growing prevalence of central precocious puberty (CPP), most cases are still diagnosed as “idiopathic” due to the lack of identifiable findings of other diagnostic etiology. We are gaining greater insight into some key genes affecting neurotransmitters and receptors and how they stimulate or inhibit gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, as well as transcriptional and epigenetic influences. Although the genetic contributions to pubertal regulation are more established in the hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) literature, cases of CPP have provided the opportunity to learn more about its own genetic influences. There have been clinically confirmed cases of CPP associated with gene mutations in kisspeptin and its receptor (KISS1, KISS1R), Delta-like noncanonical Notch ligand 1 (DLK1), and the now most commonly identified genetic cause of CPP, makorin ring finger protein (MKRN3). In addition to these proven genetic causes, a number of other candidates continue to be evaluated. After reviewing the basic clinical aspects of puberty, we summarize what is known about the various genetic and epigenetic causes of CPP as well as discuss some of the potential effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on some of these processes.
