The role of trade liberalization in promoting regional integration and sustainability: The case of regional comprehensive economic partnership

In globalization’s era, the sustainability of a region is inseparable from the in-depth and close economic and trade cooperation of intra-regional countries to achieve complementary advantages, intra-regional and extra-regional positive economic cycles, and stable and balanced benefits distribution. For Asia-Pacific countries, the lack of deep cooperation in the past has affected their sustainability, but this can be made up for by the RCEP agreement aimed at achieving intra-regional trade liberalization. We adopt the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) simulation analysis method to quantitatively analyze the impact of changes in macroeconomic and international trade indicators of several intra-regional countries after implementing the RCEP tariff reduction and exemption on the RCEP. Simulation results and comparative analysis based on international relations prove that despite the interference of trade benefits conflicts and international political factors, the RCEP can still exist in long term, and effectively promote regional economic integration and sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also a development opportunity for intra-regional countries and can also be used in the context of globalization providing references for integration and sustainability in other regions.

From World Factory to Global City-Region: The Dynamics of Manufacturing in the Pearl River Delta and Its Spatial Pattern in the 21st Century

Since the 21st century, the PRD has gradually been transforming from a world factory to a global city-region. Based on the manufacturing and urban economic data, this paper uses the upgrade (UPG) index of industrial structure, comparative advantage and economies of scale to evaluate the development level of manufacturing in the PRD from 2000 to 2019. Through geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR), this paper measures the impact of four types of components (R & D, service economy, production capability and foreign investment) on the development of manufacturing in different periods. The results show the disharmony between the scale, structure and quality of the manufacturing in different cities. The impact on the manufacturing from R & D has spatiotemporal differences; the impact of foreign investment on the west coast cities of PRD is stronger than that of the east coast cities with varied impact mechanisms. The impact of the service economy is strong in sub-core cities. The impact of production capability has a transmission effect from core cities to the sub-core cities, indicating the manufacturing subdivision of function within the region. By 2019, The PRD has gradually transformed into a dual-core structure and the two cores have differentiated development paths.

Identification of Urban Functional Areas Based on POI Data: A Case Study of the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone

Functional areas are the basic spatial units in which cities or development zones implement urban plans and provide functions. Internet map big data technology provides a new method for the identification and spatial analysis of functional areas. Based on the POI (point of interest) data from AMap (a map application of AutoNavi) from 2017, this paper proposes an urban functional areas recognition and analysis method based on the frequency density and the ratio of POI function types. It takes the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone as a case study to analyze the main function and spatial distribution characteristics of the detailed functional areas. The research shows the following: (1) The POI frequency density index and the function type ratio can effectively distinguish the functions of the grid units and analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of a complex functional area. (2) The single functional area is the most common area type in the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone. The largest proportion of all areas is allocated to traditional manufacturing industry functional areas, followed by high-tech enterprises, catering and entertainment, real estate, and education and health care, in descending order. The smallest proportion is allocated to finance and insurance functional areas. (3) The current layout of the functional areas in the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone conforms to the overall requirements and planning objectives of the central and local government. The layout and agglomeration of different blocks within the economic development zone are consistent with local industry’s target orientation and development history.
