Analyzing and Forecasting Energy Consumption in China’s Manufacturing Industry and Its Subindustries

Sustainable Development of New Urbanization from the Perspective of Coordination: A New Complex System of Urbanization‒Technology Innovation and the Atmospheric Environment

Exploring the coordinated development of urbanization (U), technology innovation (T), and the atmospheric environment (A) is an important way to realize the sustainable development of new-type urbanization in China. Compared with existing research, we developed an integrated index system that accurately represents the overall effect of the three subsystems of UTA, and a new weight determination method, the structure entropy weight (SEW), was introduced. Then, we constructed a coordinated development index (CDI) of UTA to measure the level of sustainability of new-type urbanization. This study also analyzed trends observed in UTA for 11 cities in Zhejiang Province of China, using statistical panel data collected from 2006 to 2017. The results showed that: (1) urbanization efficiency, the benefits of technological innovation, and air quality weigh the most in the indicator systems, which indicates that they are key factors in the behavior of UTA. The subsystem scores of the 11 cities show regional differences to some extent. (2) Comparing the coordination level of UTA subsystems, we found that the order is: coordination degree of UT > coordination degree of UA > coordination degree of TA. This suggests that the atmospheric environment system improvement is an important strategic decision for sustainable urbanization in Zhejiang. (3) The UTACDI values of the 11 cities are not high enough, as the coordination is mainly low, basic, or good, while none of the cities reached the stage of excellent coordination. (4) Gray Model (1,1) revealed that the time taking to achieve excellent coordination varies for different cities. Hangzhou and Ningbo were predicted to reach the excellent coordination level in 2018. Other cities are predicted to take 2–4 years to adjust their urbanization strategies enough to be considered to have excellent coordination of their UTA system.

Event-Driven Online Machine State Decision for Energy-Efficient Manufacturing System Based on Digital Twin Using Max-Plus Algebra

Energy-efficient manufacturing is an important aspect of sustainable development in current society. The rapid development of sensing technologies can collect real-time production data from shop floors, which provides more opportunities for making energy saving decisions about manufacturing systems. In this paper, a digital twin-based bidirectional operation framework is proposed to realize energy-efficient manufacturing systems. The data view, model view, and service view of a digital twin manufacturing system are formulated to describe the physical systems in virtual space, to perform simulation analysis, to make decisions, and to control the physical systems for various energy-saving purposes. For online energy-saving decisions about machines in serial manufacturing systems, an event-driven estimation method of an energy-saving window based on Max-plus Algebra is presented to put the target machine to sleep, considering real-time production data of a system segment. A practical, simplified automotive production line is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by simulation experiments. Our method has no restriction on machine failure mode and predefined parameters for energy-saving decision of machines. The proposed approach has potential use in synchronous and asynchronous manufacturing systems.

Exploring regional differences in the impact of high energy-intensive industries on CO2 emissions: Evidence from a panel analysis in China

China is currently the largest CO₂ emitter in the world. Within China, more than 60% of CO₂ emissions originate from high energy-intensive (HEI) industries. Therefore, controlling and reducing CO₂ emissions from HEI industries is crucial if China is to achieve its 2030 emission reduction targets. This study aims to investigate regional differences in the impact of HEI industries on CO₂ emissions in China. This paper presents an analysis of the impact of HEI industries on CO₂ emissions at the national and regional levels using a modified STIRPAT model and provincial panel data from 2000 to 2015 in China. The results show that HEI industries are significant contributors to China's CO₂ emissions owing to the growth in industries, coal-based energy structure, low level of technology, and outstanding conduction effects. The impact intensity of HEI industries on CO₂ emissions decreases from the western to the central and eastern regions in China because of a huge regional difference in industrial structure, energy structure, R&D investment, and industrial transfer. Our findings have important implications for policymakers in China by indicating that regional policies concerning HEI industries should be differentiated to successfully reduce CO₂ emissions and meet national targets.

Sustainability Evaluation of Process Planning for Single CNC Machine Tool under the Consideration of Energy-Efficient Control Strategies Using Random Forests

As an important part of industrialized society, manufacturing consumes a large amount of raw materials and energy, which motivates decision-makers to tackle this problem in different manners. Process planning is an important optimization method to realize the object, and energy consumption, carbon emission, or sustainability evaluation is the basis for the optimization stage. Although the evaluation research has drawn a great deal of attention, most of it neglects the influence of state control of machine tools on the energy consumption of machining processes. To address the above issue, a sustainability evaluation method of process planning for single computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool considering energy-efficient control strategies has been developed. First, four energy-efficient control strategies of CNC machine tools are constructed to reduce their energy consumption. Second, a bi-level energy-efficient decision-making mechanism using random forests is established to select appropriate control strategies for different occasions. Then, three indicators are adopted to evaluate the sustainability of process planning under the consideration of energy-efficient control strategies, i.e., energy consumption, relative delay time, and machining costs. Finally, a pedestal part machined by a 3-axis vertical milling machine tool is used to verify the proposed methods. The results show that the reduction in energy consumption considering energy-efficient control strategies reaches 25%.

Temporal and Spatial Characteristics and Early Warning Analysis of Economic Polarization Evolution: A Case Study of Jiangsu Province in China

Economic polarization is a special manifestation of economic disparity which intensifies the gap between the rich and the poor in a region and brings about a series of social problems. Though more and more scholars are studying the phenomenon of economic polarization, there are few studies on polarization level division and early warning analysis in the existing literature. The main purpose of this paper is to propose a standard for rationally dividing the level of economic polarization. This paper firstly analyzes the current situation of economic polarization by using the economic data of 54 counties and cities in Jiangsu Province from 2000 to 2016 and secondly predicts the economic polarization level of Jiangsu Province from 2017 to 2015 through the grey model. We find that, according to the classification criteria of polarization levels, the phenomenon of economic polarization in Jiangsu Province is both not as serious as expected and at a moderate level of alertness. The results of this study can provide important reference value for the coordinated development of Jiangsu Province.
