Production of the Hydroxyl Radical and Removal of Formaldehyde by Calcined Green Tuff Powder and Tile

A microwave irradiation-persulfate-formate system for achieving the detoxification and alkali-activated composite geopolymerization of the chromate-contaminated soil

A microwave (MA) irradiation-persulfate-formate system was constructed to detoxify Cr contamination and solidify the geopolymerization of the alkali-activated composite material. Three series of experiments were correspondingly conducted to evaluate the treatment for the chromate-contaminated soil. The changes in the molar ratios of formate to persulfate and the mass rates of fortifier to soil led to a significantly greater reduction of Cr^VI in the detoxification experiments. The increase of blast furnace slag from 50% to 80% in the composite cementitious materials (CCM) intensified the immobilization efficiencies of chromate and the compressive strengths of geopolymer blocks. MA irradiation potentially enhanced the binding of Ca cations to the aluminosilicate compounds. The degree of reaction in the phenomenological kinetics model mathematically verified the geopolymerization process. Ettringite was formed within the structure of the geopolymer in the coupling system. Sulfate radicals released from persulfate not only contributed to the detoxification process but also strengthened the immobilization process.

Enhancing anaerobic syntrophic propionate degradation using modified polyvinyl alcohol gel beads

Modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) beads serve as effective anaerobic microbe immobilization carriers. PVA beads were mixed with different conductive materials, activated carbon, magnetite, and green tuff stone powder. In this study, modified PVA beads were used to investigate the effect of using, promote methane production, and enhance direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) on the anaerobic syntrophic degradation of propionate, which is an essential intermediate process for generating methane in anaerobic digesters. The batch experiment showed that PVA mixed with activated carbon had the highest methane conversion rate of 72%, whereas the rates for control (sludge) was 61%. Moreover, the lag time during the second and third feedings was shorter by 5-fold than for the first feeding when modified PVA beads were added. The syntrophic propionate degrading microorganisms in the modified PVA beads was Syntrophobacter and Methanobacterium, either Methanoculleus or Methanosaeta. The modified PVA beads hold at least 10 times larger syntrophs than normal PVA. Therefore, composite PVA with conductive materials can promote methane production, accelerate propionate consumption, and enhance electron transfer in related microbial species.

Removal of Banana Tree Fungi Using Green Tuff Rock Powder Waste Containing Zeolite

Hinai green tuff, which is found in Akita Prefecture, Japan, is used for the production of building materials, etc. About 60% of all stone is emitted as waste powder and therefore it is important to find ways for recycling it. In this work, the characteristics of green tuff powder have been investigated. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and elemental map observations indicate that the green tuff contains TiO2 on zeolite. The green tuff can therefore be used as a natural catalyst for producing hydrogen peroxide with moisture and oxygen with light. The optimum calcined temperature of the green tuff powder is about 800 °C, producing the hydroxyl radical from hydrogen peroxide decomposition without ultraviolet light (UV) and decomposition of the superoxide anion. As the application of green tuff powder, Cavendish banana trees found in the Philippines infected by a new Panama disease were treated with powder suspension in order to remove the fungus (a type of Fusarium wilt) due to the photocatalyst characteristics of powder. The suspension, prepared by using the powder was sprayed on the infected banana trees for about one month. Photograph observation indicated that the so-called 800 °C suspension spray was more effective in growing the infected banana trees.
