Electromagnetic Energy Harvesting Technology: Key to Sustainability in Transportation Systems

Harvesting marine plastic pollutants-derived renewable energy: A comprehensive review on applied energy and sustainable approach

The inevitable use of plastics in the existing standard of life makes its way to ecosystems, predominantly into the marine ecosystem. Recent research on energy recycling from marine discarded plastics through biological, chemical, and thermal processes is summarized, which degrade plastic debris and transform it into energy-efficient products. In a system-oriented approach, different boundaries like carbon efficiency, global warming potential, cumulative energy demand, and cost of the product have been evaluated. Even these technologies may successfully reduce the yearly volume of marine plastics by up to 89% while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30%. Conversely, recycling a ton of marine discarded plastics may save 915 cubic feet of landfill space, 6500 kWh of energy, and barrels of oil. Energy may be recovered up to 79% from waste plastics using various techniques. Up to 84% liquid fuel had been generated, with a maximum calorific power of 45 MJ/kg. It has been shown that in Asian countries, the power generation capacity of throw-away facemask wastes regularly varies from 2256 kWh/day to 18.52 million kWh/day. Hence, the conversion of marine plastics into biofuel, syngas, biochar, hydrocarbons, electricity, and value-added functional materials by various biotechnological and chemical processes like biodegradation, pyrolysis, gasification, methanolysis, and hydrolysis should be improvised as a source of alternative energy in the immediate future. Our review signifies the potential benefits of energy harvesting technologies from marine plastics pollutants to overcome the growing challenge of energy demands and provide a long-term solution to underdeveloped and developing countries as a sustainable source of energy. Endorsing current strategies to harvest energy from marine plastic wastes that enhance power generation technologies will help in building a more sustainable and greener environment that imparts a healthy and circular economy while shielding natural resources.

Modelling and Analysis of Power-Regenerating Potential for High-Speed Train Suspensions

Sustainable technologies in transport systems have attracted significant research efforts over the last two decades. One area of interest is self-powered devices, which reduce system integration complexity and cost with an undoubtedly great potential for improving adaptability and developing sustainability in railway transport systems. One potential solution is a regenerative suspension system, which enables the suspension movements and dissipated energy to be converted into useful electricity. This paper explores the application of hydraulic–electromagnetic regenerative dampers (HERDs) under realistic railway operating conditions for a high-speed train (HST). A vehicle-track-coupled dynamics model is employed to evaluate the regenerative power potential of an HST suspension over a range of operating conditions. The work considers typical route curvature and track irregularity of a high-speed line and speed profile. It was found that power could be regenerated at a level of up to 5–30 W and 5–45 W per generation unit when fitted to the primary and secondary dampers, respectively. Such power-regeneration levels were adequate to supply a variety of low-power-consumption onboard components such as warning lights and wireless sensors. Further analysis of the carbody loading level also was carried out. The analysis revealed that, in the case of a high-speed journey, poor track geometry, low curvature, and reduced carbody weight increased the quantity of regenerative energy harvested by the HERDs. It was concluded that a suitable HERD design could be achieved that could facilitate the development of a smart railway damper that includes both self-sensing and power-generation functions.

Energy and Environmental Implications of Using Energy-Harvesting Speed Humps in Nablus City, Palestine

Over the last three decades, transportation has become one of the main energy-consuming sectors around the world and, as a result, large amounts of emissions are produced, contributing to global warming, climate change, and health problems. Therefore, huge investments and efforts have been made by governments and international institutions to find new renewable and clean sources of energy. As a contribution to these efforts, this study determined the practical energy and environmental implications of replacing conventional speed humps with energy-harvesting speed humps in Nablus city, Palestine. The study was implemented using an energy-harvesting speed hump (EHSH) system developed in the laboratories at An-Najah National University and based on comprehensive traffic volume counts at all speed humps’ locations. In addition, a traffic volume prediction model was developed in order to determine the implications over the next 10 years. As a result of the study, the expected annual amount of generated energy was determined. Moreover, the expected reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the reduction in the cost of roadway network lighting were determined based on the current and future traffic conditions.

Recent Developments in the Energy Harvesting Systems from Road Infrastructures

The rapid increase in energy demand has resulted in more dependence on fossil fuels, which leads to higher CO2 emissions every year. To overcome this problem, shifting from fossil fuel-based energy resources to renewable and sustainable ones is essential. One of the new research areas developed in this context is the harvesting of energy from urban infrastructures and, in particular, roads. A large amount of energy in the form of heat or kinetic energy is wasted annually on roads. Recovering these local forms of energy as electricity would improve the energy efficiency of cities. In this review paper, recent developments in the field of energy recovery from roads using solar panels, piezoelectric, thermoelectric and electromagnetic harvesters are discussed along with their efficiency, cost and field implementation. Moreover, new advancements in developing compatible energy storage systems are also discussed and summarised. Based on the review, although all of these systems have the potential of recovering at least a part of the wasted energy, only one of them (the electromagnetic converters) is capable of generating a considerable energy level. In addition, based on the evaluation of the maturity of the technologies, and their cost analyses, more studies are required in order to fill the gap between the current state of the technologies and their full operational form.
