The Response of Dissolved Organic Matter during Monsoon and Post-Monsoon Periods in the Regulated River for Sustainable Water Supply

Tracing the pathways by which flood duration impacts soil bacteria through soil properties and water-extractable dissolved organic matter: A soil column experiment

Soil microbial communities control biogeochemical processes, nutrient cycling, and organic carbon storage and release in wetlands, which are influenced by flooding. To predict soil nutrient function in wetland ecosystems, understanding the effect of flooding on soil biogeochemical cycling and energy flux, including soil properties, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and microbial communities is essential. This study investigated how different flood durations (1, 3, 8, 16, and 30 d) affect the interactions between physicochemical properties and bacterial communities in a river wetland. The DOM composition was measured using ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometry coupled with fluorescence spectroscopy, and the bacterial communities were identified using 16S rRNA sequencing. Simpson's diversity index varied from 0.92 to 0.94, indicating high bacterial diversity throughout the treatments; the highest and lowest bacterial diversities were found at 1 and 8 flooding days, respectively. The abundance of Desulturomonadales, Clostridiales, Bacteroidales, and Gaiellales was positively correlated with pH, electrical conductivity, water-extractable dissolved organic carbon (WEOC), and water-extractable total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) but negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) and soil organic matter (SOM), suggesting complex interactions among these factors in response to flooding. Structural equation model revealed that flooding directly increased TDN but indirectly increased WEOC through increasing soil pH; and directly decreased DO and SOM, leading to decreases in total protein-like fraction. Three significant pathways were identified, showing the impacts of flooding on bacterial diversity: (1) flood duration decreased DO, resulting in decreased bacterial diversity; (2) flood duration decreased SOM, leading to increased bacterial diversity; and (3) flood duration decreased DO and SOM, leading to increased bacterial diversity via decreased total protein-like fraction. This study indicated that prolonged flooding has both positive and negative impacts on bacterial diversity, depending on environmental factors. It highlights the importance of flooding in shaping soil bacterial communities, with implications for nutrient cycling and carbon storage in wetlands.

Variation in Dissolved Organic Matter Using Absorbance and Fluorescence Measurements during Dry Season in Sta. Rosa and Cabuyao Rivers, Philippines

Santa Rosa watershed, where the Santa Rosa River and Cabuyao River are located, is growing with increasing urbanization and commercialization in their surroundings. Water quality monitoring is an important tool in understanding the possible impacts of domestic, industrial, and commercial discharges, and agricultural run-off on river systems and their tributaries. With the integration of absorbance and fluorescence measurements, we can further examine the effects of land use and climate change on dissolved organic matter (DOM) sources found in river systems. In this study, these two rivers exhibit poor quality with varying values in each sampling station and period. DOM sources change from terrestrial to endogenous sources within the sampling period. High aromaticity and molecular size were observed in all downstream sampling stations. This is supported by the high values of humic-like substances. Fluorescence index values showed temporal changes from terrestrial to endogenous DOM sources from November 2019 to February 2020. This is also confirmed by the increasing trend in the biological index. The variation in all sampling stations can be attributed to varying land use, hydrological, and climatological changes such as typhoon Tisoy, and Taal Volcano eruption observed during the sampling period.

Changes in the Dissolved Organic Matter Characteristics Released from Sediment According to Precipitation in the Namhan River with Weirs: A Laboratory Experiment

In this study, changes in the properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from sediments into water layers were investigated. To analyze the spatial and temporal variation in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), sediment and bottom water samples were collected upstream of the Gangcheon, Yeoju, and Ipo weirs of the Namhan River during the rainy and non-rainy seasons. The initial DOC was correlated with precipitation (R² = 0.295, p = 0.034) and residence time (R² = 0.275, p = 0.040). The change in the bottom water DOC concentration resulted from the DOC released from the sediments, which may cause water quality issues in the bottom water. The fluorescence analysis revealed that the DOM contained higher levels of hydrophilic and low-molecular-weight (LMW) organic matter in the non-rainy season and higher levels of hydrophobic and high-molecular-weight (HMW) organic matter in the rainy season. Since the Namhan River is the main resource of drinking water for the Seoul metropolitan area, our results can help to optimize the drinking water treatment process by reflecting the DOM characteristics that vary with the seasons. Furthermore, the statistical analysis confirmed that the nutrient content of pore-water and sediment can be used to estimate the DOM release rate from the sediment to the water layer. The results of this study provide a better understanding of DOM movement in aquatic ecosystems and the influences of rainfall on the water quality of the surface waterbody.
